Heck, if we got a few certain people on this forum together, they could write a BOOK that would stand the test of time.

Hey again Karl. Yeah sorry I missed it.......long story centered about my inability to drive on highways due to extreme vertigo.....buddy couldn't come so neither could I.

I've read all the posts here and really appreciate the report!

Hey, namrednef,

Yeah, I was wondering if you were there? I figured you would've introduced yourself if you were?

Well, it was a shame that turnout was so low...I was talking to a guy at the LHS and they had a couple theories.I hope next year they have a better turnout...

I am a repentent 'no-show'.Ashamed [*^_^*]......"something came up"

Do my best to make the next one!

Great models you had there.....can't figure the turnout being that low! I haven't been to shows recently, but it looked very 'tame'.

Looking fwd to your demo next year!

Thanks, Al!

That's a cross section of a rail from a train track--pretty unique, I think? It does look a bit strange at first when you see it, huh? Smile [:)]

Man, I jsut don't understand what's the deal up here in NY? The thruway tolls? The local economy? I'm baffled--even more so after hearing about yours and Daywalker's shows!

Congrats on the awards. What's with the mushroom cloud on the Ironman, though? Big Smile [:D]

Too bad about the attendance. Sad [:(]I was at Granitecon at the other end of IPMS Region I and they had near record turnout, IIRC they said there were over 328 entries on the tables. There was only one class, mounted figures, that was empty and I think only two others with fewer than 3 entries. WWII and earlier 1/35 armor had to be split, with almost 40 entries. Of course, we're down several events out here with a couple being gone Dead [xx(]and a couple on Zzz [zzz]hiatus as the clubs regroup.

DML Brummbar and Revell Jagpanzer Kanone--1st and 2nd

Does this suggest Syracuse has sweeps, i.e. one builder may take multiple awards in a category? That may play into the equation of lower attendance. Out here, there's really only one event that has sweeps, an all car event. There are a couple who will allow modified sweeps, allowing one builder to take more than one award if there are fewer that three entrants. To newbies, this lookos like favoritism, especially when there is a really good, mulitfaceted builder like Karl present. And, no, I am not in any way suggesting this is what happened, but to someone who is new on the scene and maybe has read sour grapes posts about "home cooking" this could easily be the perception.

Remember, if the women don't find you handsome, they should at least find you handy.

LOL! Maybe that's the problem? Maybe I'm taking too many of them up here?! Whistling [:-^]...Wink [;)](JUST KIDDING!)

Here's what I entered and won:

Revell SuperBee 1st

MPC Charger-2nd

Historex Horses collection--1st

Italeri Midieval tournament dio-1st

DML E100--1st

Lair of the Rust Buns-1st, Best Dio, Best of Show

DML Brummbar and Revell Jagpanzer Kanone--1st and 2nd

McLaren M16C/D Johnny Rutherford by AMT--1st

The Frantics figures--didn't place

Lair, Superbee, Brummbar--Iron Man Award

I think that was the correct listing? There are two first places that I gave to Jenn to take home to put next to the models I built her that aren't in the picture.

I dunno... looking forward to hearing theories on why the attendance was so low.  Perhaps, as you have mentioned, it was the plethora of recent contests in the area.  Anybody else have any ideas?

Hmmph, Daywalker; that just nakes it more puzzling as to why turn out was so low--maybe it was the recent slew of contests, including the Syracuse Nationals, Rochester-Con, and some smaller local shows? Interestingly, there's even another small local show/contest yet this coming weekend! Still, I'm at a loss to understand it?

There are some nice shots at your contest there--thanks for the post! Thanks for the Make a Toast [#toast]!

Karl- Bummer about the turnout!  Wish I could have gone, but even with gas prices being down I still couldn't drive over.  Too bad you were not able to do your demo, perhaps you could come over to WI next March and do it at our show? Whistling [:-^]

Some stunning work displayed, thanks for the pics.  Congratulations on your awards!  As far as attendance at local shows, ours earlier this year had record numbers of attendees and we completely ran out of table space.  If you're interested, here's a link to some pics from our show:

Mad-City Modelers 2008

I would really enjoy meeting some fellow FSM forum members at shows, perhaps next year at the Nats. Thumbs Up [tup]

SYRCON report
Posted by the doog on Monday, October 20, 2008 10:19 AM

Hi Guys,

Just wanted to do a follow-up on the IPMS-Syracuse NY SYRCON Regional contest, as there was some chatter about it here, most specifically about my doing a weathering demo at it. Well, the demo never happened, and I apologize to anyone who showed up to see it. To be honest, it was me myself who suggested that it be postponed until nex year, after a very limited turnout put the show in a crisis state of not having enough judges to allow for judging to get done in a timely fashion, which would have kept everyone there for a lot longer. I told Tony (lexesbenz) to wait and see ifthere wold be enough judges to fill out the 3-man teams, and when it was clear that we would have been woefully short, I decided that for the benefit of everone, it would be better if I helped judge, and not pull away even more people with the promise of the demo session, which was slated to run concurrently with the judging. ANother thing that might've hurt the pull of the demo was that it was a last-minute thing; the boys didn't even have time to put it on the flyer, so it was spread only by word of mouth and here, briefly. Next year, we'll put it on the flyer.

We were kinda bummed--gas has recently dropped here by over 50 cents, with it being available now for around $2.90, and I really thought that the turnout would be higher. That being said, I did really well, but I felt kinda cheesy taking a few trophies in which I was the only entry, such as "Turretless AFV's", and "Natural Creatures", in which I entered my Historex Horses collection which I'd built for Jenn.

I did get some nice "End Awards"--Best Diorama and Best of Show" (2nd year in a row) for "The Lair of the Rust Bunnies", and "Iron Man", where three models in different categories are judged cumulatively for an overall vote. I also was very proud to take 1st in "Factory Stock" for my Revell 69 Superbee in a category which was relatively well-populated.

Picked up some goodies, too--some 1/72 buildings, and some tools--a mini-chisel set that looks very versatile. Held off on new kit purchases though; my stash reallyneeds trimming, and I'm bracing for the heating bills this winter.

Well, here's some pics...

Some shots of the scarcity of entries taken around 11:30 AM; judging started at 1:00.

A decent selection of vendors..

This naval crane was 100% scratchbuilt.

This train was nicely done, but the guy completely missed painting the wheels inside!  If you notice, this is an example of "splinter camo", the likes of which I recently used on my 7.5 cm Sturm Kanone auf Pz.Kpfw. 38(t).

A really nicely done partly-scratchbuilt farm truck.

Kind of a cool Iraq dio for you vets here...

My friend Bob's outstanding, winning motorcycle entry...

This is the model that took "Best Armor" as wel as the AMPS award--very well deserved! Although I couldn't judge this category, due to having my jagdpanzer Kanone in the "Tank Destroyers" category, I "voted" this one the winnner as well. An outstanding finish!

The day's haul.

Has anyone else noticed the turnout being down at local shows?
