Hey Gents, question on workspace organization
Posted by ram40ut on Monday, January 6, 2014 5:39 PM

I don't have a lot of room, but enough. However, I'm not OCD enough to keep my area in order, and keep what I use handy and at arms length. It seems like I start off with a new project just fine, but the next thing I know, I have tools all all over the place, different bottles out, and it's just to difficult for me to stay organized. I'm a grown ass man too! LOL

I see You Tube vids of guys and it's as neat as a surgical suite, I bought a Hobbico cutting mat, but I've made a mess of it. Does anybody have any photos of their workspace, and/ or anything written down describing how they have their materials laid out, and paint, and glues etc stored.

thanks in advance!

Hello RAM40UT, Here's my little work space in my kitchen.

I always keep all of my paints organized by brand and their color number.

And I use a left over Tamiya box to store most of my tools.

I try to keep all of my super glues in one spot and so on. The little plastic boxes I bought at Hobby Lobby for under $4. I use one for my main tools that i use all the time and the second the one's I don't always need.

Really that's all it takes me to be orginzed. I've just gotten into the habit of cleaning my area whenever I stop for the day.

I try to keep the workplace neat by always putting any particular tool, paint jar, etc back in its original place before proceeding to the next step.  Otherwise, I will shortly end up with my work surface cluttered with tools and supplies that I'm not needing in the task at hand.  Works for me!

Gimme a pigfoot, and a bottle of beer...

You mean a mess like this

I try to put things away as I go but sometimes it gets in the way as the hunting down for it begins. I do try to put away as much as possible after each build session. The desk, small metal cabinet and chair are from Ikea and work just great for me.

The small cabinet has all my paints and tools

In the clear plastic drawer unit next to my computer I keep all the scratch building things, oil paints, and other misc. stuff

and over in the closet I keep some of my stash (rest is in the garage) and other paints and finishing products. I keep most of them in small plastic crates from the Dollar store.

I'm lucky to have a mancave though small but soon to be upgraded. The wife suggested for me to take over the guest room which is twice as big and converting my present space into the guest room. Once I do that then I will have more space for a really nice and large display cabinet I want to make to go along with the other ones I have.

I only take pictures after I have cleaned the bench.  Right now it is a super mess, like it is 90% of the time.  One of these days I may learn to put each tool back each time I use it.  However, since I am 75 and haven't learned to do that yet, I am not hopeful.

My modeling bench (which is tucked into a corner of my garage) is a mess right now, mostly because I have several projects in-progress and competing for space.  That plus I haven't had much time for modeling in the last couple of months.  In the mean time my bench became a dumping ground for some other random stuff.  I did do some inventory this past weekend and came up with a battle plan to get some stuff finished before jumping into anything new.

I wish I could help but I'm in the same predicament. My bench always looks it was hit by an earthquake and tornado simultaneously. It's so frustrating because I seem to spend half my building sessions searching for a particular object which usually ends up being right in front of my eyes....I hate it, but I can't ever seem to dig myself out.

I found the picture I used last time this subject came up, so here it is.

The two pedestals are those plastic drawer units they sell at office supply stores.  The top is a sandwich of two pieces of half inch particle board board with 1 x 2s between them. I cover top and front with contact paper (shelf paper) which is easily replaceable when it gets messed up with paint and glue gobs.  Pegboard is fastened to two 1 x 2 uprights fastened to rear 1 x 2 of desktop sandwich.
