May be switching modeling genres
Posted by cwalker3 on Wednesday, November 26, 2014 1:58 PM

I've been modeling military vehicles ever since I got back into the hobby 10 years ago. I've done Allied and Axis vehicles from WWII and modern US vehicles. I have been in rut since 2010 and have only completed one vehicle since then. A few months ago I found kits for Herman Munster and Grandpa from the old Munsters TV program. I ordered both and completed them within a couple of weeks. And the significant part is that I thoroughly enjoyed both builds.

Right now I have Mengs M2A3 Bradley on the bench. I've gotten through a few steps and even though I want to finish I just can't bring myself to try. And then yesterday while surfing around, I found that Moebius had introduced a new Batman model based on the 1966 TV series. And better than that, their plan is to market models of all of the villains from  the series with all of the bases made to fit together for one large diorama. Talk about physced. I loved that series when I was young so this is a no brainer. So as of now, Batman is on order, at least as long as the wife goes by my Christmas gift list request. Robin and The Penquin, which are on pre-order, will have to wait until they're on the market.

So, I hope this change gets me back into the hobby. It is something that I really enjoy and gives me a lot of satisfaction. Wish me luck.

And finally, Happy Thanksgiving to everyone!

Cary

Every now and then, it helps re-ignite the enthusiasm by trying something different.

We'd like to see photos of your accomplishments, too, please.

Glad you enjoy your new interests. That is after all, why we do this in the first place.

One small piece of advice, don't sell off everything you have at first,,,,,,,,plastic modeling interests can go in cycles.

I started out in Aircraft,,,,then for a while, I reduced that and concentrated on Table Top wars with 1/72 AFVs,,,,,,then back to aircraft,,,,the 1/700 ships, and now back to aircraft and aviation ground vehicles.

I kept most of my aircraft stuff each time, except once, when I went to tanks.........buying things at the current price was quite a shock after selling off a bunch of that stuff at the discount it took to get it to move.

If you have the space, letting your stuff sit in short term storage for a while might save you money in the long run. And if you still decide that you are done with it later, it won't have lost any more of the value then versus now.

I look at those models when I run across them too,,,,,,,that Batman dio sounds like a fun "collection/diorama" build,,,,did you see Batman at the theatre in the sixties, or the TV series? (how old is Rex?,,,,,,old enough to prefer Frank Gerschwin's Riddler over John Astin's)

I have to echo  what Tarn Ship said about not selling off everything as as you pursue new model interests. You never know when you might get the armor bug again.

Don't think of it as switching. Think of it as adding to your comfort zone. You've branched out in a new direction and found something that you really enjoy and brought back that loving feeling.  Put your AFVs aside for now, as others said, and go have lots of fun with your new toys. The old ones will still be there when and if the urge to come back to the dark side returns. It always does for me ;)

Been there many times. When I first entered this hobby back in the 70s, all I did were cars. Just when I thought I've done every cool hot rods, I got bored and moved onto aircraft then armor, then... well you get the idea.

Everybody needs a change of pace now and then. Enjoy your new plastic venture. :)

Why ever be restricted to any single genre?

I agree. While I am mainly a modern US armor modeler, there are very few modeling genres that I do not have a kit of. I have most Batmobile kits; the Bandai line was made in 1/35 scale and compatible with many armor kits.

Ditto on all the above.   Last year I got a Pegasus War of the Worlds creature in a trade.  Couldn't decide what to do with it as I've never done figures or creatures.  Started messing around with it as a side project and came up with the creature flying a 1/87 R/C Sopwith Camel. Came out OK and took it to MarauderCon where it took a first place in Humor in Modelling.  Maybe I'll try a couple more of these 1/8 Figures/Creatures.

You never know what will happen.

Thanks guys for your responses. I understand where everyone is coming from about just branching out and not giving up on one genre or the other. I didn't mean to sound like that what I was considering. There are too many kits that I presently have that I want to do and that I know I would have a hard time finding if I wanted one. I am hoping that by building these figure models it will help me get my armor fever back. And for those of you that wanted to see pics of what I've done up until now, here goes:

I first started out my years in the hobby by making German AFVs, then, I got bored of that (and also frustrated by the fact that I could not model zimmerit at all) and started making ww2 planes, I continued with that until a couple of fortnights ago when I suddenly became interested in the Ol' armour models again! So over the Christmas holidays, I will be buying 3 armour kits to work on and will post them on this forum

I have to echo everyone else here too.  I was an aircraft and Spacecraft kinda builder since I was a kid.  After joining the forums here, I started doing GB's.  Since I have built my first figure and armor kits!  Loved the figure GB that I went out and bought another one to do.  And I have gotten armor crazy since doing the 234/1.  Variety is the spice of life and in this hobby, you have a full spectrum of genres...planes, armor, ships, figures, Sci-Fi, automobiles!  Try them all!  And I must say those new builds of yours are great!  Might have to look into getting one myself!  And your armor rocks!

I don't limit myself to a particular subject. I go back and forth between aircrafts, vehicles, figures, dioramas and ships. Same for scale sizes. Although I deal mostly with 1/48 for aircraft, I have been exploring 1/72, 1/32 and 1/24. My armor is mostly 1/35 but I have a couple in 1/24th. I even built a guillotine recently just to add a different flavor to my display cases.

Man, I do just about every genre out there. It keeps the creative fires burning. Nothing wrong with that at all!

I was awarded most improved modeler 2014 by my col spgs club because of 4 local and 1 regional contest wins and my willingness to ask questions, try new stuff, and build different genres (though still within military). quite a surprise. that has whet my appetite to branch out even more. this year i got into 1/72 armor which is a lot of fun.

i am into modern military wheels and am doing a UN or civilian version of a 6x6 URAL 4320 with detailed engine. basically a non streamlined car model (or a car is a streamlined truck model with better paint). i will be doing a helo, some T-2  terminator kits w/ lighting, some 1/24 fire trucks which are out of my comfort zone. may even do a dinosaur and a kitbash (have 2 in mind, one real and one goofy)

the building will be pretty much the same but this will really force me to work on my painting, airbrushing, and filtering/weathering/base building. all good stuff i can use in any genre.

I will build a model of anything. I once build my 2 story dream house with it's actual framing out of balsa. I cut little 2x4's, 2x8's, roof trusses etc. just to see if I could do it. It ended up being around 2' square.

Building a kit from your stash is like cutting a head off a Hydra, two more take it's place.

Thanks for all of the input. I think I'll just continue modeling what I feel like and see where that goes. Maybe I'll even learn a few things along the way.

I've built everything from planes to ships to spacecraft, but when I discovered resin garage kits a few years ago, that was it for me; I've been building them exclusively ever since. One of the reasons why is that you can get models of the most arcane subjects - stuff the major plastic companies would never put out because there isn't enough demand. They're mostly figure kits from movies and the like, but there are also resin model and plane kits. They tend to be more expensive because they're limited-run items, but the detail in some of them is astounding. I'm into the spacecraft and female kit end of the hobby; here's an example of what's available:
