Tunes at the Workbench??
Posted by ModelMan68 on Saturday, December 5, 2015 2:57 PM

Hello everyone,

Well, that time of year has once again approached us quickly and everyone is scrambling to shop, mail packages and travel to love ones. I would like to wish all of you and your family a Merry Christmas and a Happy and Healthy New Year.

Now to my odd question......Do you have any favorite tunes you listen to when your at your workbench. I listen to all kind's of music.....classical, classic rock, country(old stuff), bluegrass and basic music from the 50's - 90's. I currently have The Clash, The Who, Led Zeppelin and Fleetwood Mac in my stereo at my workbench. I also like to have a college football or basketball game on. I am just wondering if music help's during your builds or does it hender your build?

Again, Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to you and your family!!!

Music definitely helps, but I am all over the board. Sometimes in theme with my build subject. I have a stereo set up at my work bench with an Ipod adapter cord, or one of my CDs, or from my You Tube playlist using my tablet.

Stik.....thanks for highlighting YouTube music.....I forgot YouTube had music because I am always focusing on "How to Vids". I like how everyone has a wide spectrum of music.

It depends.  I usually use music from the 60s and 70s, some classics, as well as various sound tracks.  Som of these I peice together onto a C.D. from other discs, such as Flight of the FIre Mares form "KRULL", Seaquest, Star Wars, Differwent Star Trek shows or movies, Monuments Men, or an instrumental from Guardians of the Galaxy.  I might even go back to things from WII that I made for my Father.

Right now I'm in the VIetnam Grtoup Build over on ARC and I have a collection of songs done by G.I.s that were collected by DR. Lydia Fish in Buffalo.

I was sent to music school from the age of 6 to learn to play classical piano so that is my first choice. I also listen to big bands music of the 40's, opera, and also music from the 50's, 60's, show tunes and some jazz.

I have a radio tuned to my public radio's classical station.  Only time i do not hear classical is during Prairie Home Companion.

I'm a child of the 80's so it's cheesy synthesizers for me!  All 80's, all the time.

Music from the 1930's and 40's. I have my computer in close vicinity to my workbench. I put on an internet station that plays the stuff constantly. Of course, I was brought up on it as my parents were Depression kids.

Traditional Jazz, otherwise known as "Dixieland". It chases the mice out of the house!

Huh?

Just kidding, no, we don't have mice in the house.  (But those deadly snakes gotta go!)

Gimme a pigfoot, and a bottle of beer...

Depends on what I'm working on.  Theme music for the model, I suppose.  Say I'm working on a WWII Corsair or Hellcat, then it's the soundtrack from "Victory at Sea".  Or if I'm working on Star Trek's USS Enterprise, then it's the soundtrack from the TV or movies.  I'm working on a WWII WACO glider right now, so it's the soundtrack from "Band of Brothers" and "Saving Private Ryan".

I just play my favorite CD, over and over.

"Broderick Crawford sings hits from Peter Pan."

Soothing.

I've been collecting classical CDs ever since the CD was introduced (making my classical LP collection obsolescent), so that's the kind of thing I usually listen to when I'm working on a ship model.

I'm also a huge fan of audiobooks for that purpose. A year or so I discovered a remarkable website: www.naxosaudiobooks.com . That company offers an incredible range of titles in the form of CDs and digital downloads (cheaper and no wait for them to ship). Note that some of the books are abridged, and some aren't. (I draw the line at the unabridged War and Peace - or Gibbon's Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire.)

One time I listened to Joseph Conrad's Typhoon while working on a model on a nice summer evening. I had to open the workshop window to assure myself that a typhoon wasn't blowing outside.

Highly recommended.

Youth, talent, hard work, and enthusiasm are no match for old age and treachery.

Typically I watch something on AHC, History Discovery, and Science ETC. Sometimes Old Time Radio on XM, but Mr. Tilley has a venue I never thought of...audio books. I have a score of audio books from Audible that I haven't started yet, mostly Sci Fi. I need to try that.

Try the Heinlien's original story of Starship Troopers or his Sixth Column.

GAF, interested in a copy of Victory at Sea Part 2?
