who are your models?

Go to a local show and look around.  You'll find a lot of great models there and the fellows that built them.

My first choice is Paul Budzik as well. The guys on here are equally as good in their respective fields.  My gurus on here are Plasticjunkie, Lawdog, Fermis, Grant Dalzel just to name a few.  I don't mean to leave anyone out but that's all I remember for now and that's pretty good for my age.

The onbly model builders i know are the ones i meant on forums and at the model club. But there are several, especially from here, who have really inspired me to strive to do better, even if their end results are not the same as i want to achieve.

I really don't have 1 or 2 all around people. There are some on the forums that I look to for painting, some for information on armor, some on aircraft and still others for ships. Some, all be it very few, look to me.

I would have enjoyed the opportunity to ask Shep Payne a few questions while he was alive though.

There a VERY few on YouTube that I'm am intrigued with their skill.

Ye, i would very much echo that comment, especially when it comes to armour and figures.

Kidding aside... those who insire me to get better are on forums like this. So many to list- Fermis, stik, mustang to name a few...

Gotta say this first off, that you can find ALOT of excellent inspiration here in the forums, from guys like Toshi, Don, and many others. As far as that goes, Ive found a few great ones on Youtube, guys like Paul Budzik, Bobby Waldron with Genessis Models, Alex with AlexModeling, Daemon with PLASMO-plastic modeling, and International Scale Modeller. Each one has varying building styles but they all do great quality work. One thing i find about this hobby is the magnitude of builders of all skill levels that all have gems in their builds to inspire other builds. Looking forward to seeing how your builds come along and how you inspire others.

For a bit of context, as I've been slowly working my way through my first build since I was a kid, I realized I didn't really have a clear frame of reference for what "excellent" really looks like, and the mindset I had when I was 12 isn't all that helpful now. 

There's a quote about innovation (which I can't find at the moment) which goes something along the lines of "all we needed to know was that it was possible, then it was just a matter of figuring out how." Seeing what great craftspeople have done (especially at a given scale) is kind of essential, just because then you know where the bar is, when to keep pushing, and when to accept you've encountered a point of diminishing returns.

Too many times, people stop themselves by saying "I can't" or "I don't know how"...when they just need to say "how can I?" It may not be immediate, but the brain can do some amazing things when you ask and let it!

I can't really say that I ever had any modeling idols, or ever tried to be better than anyone but myself. That's not to say that I haven't been inspired by others (see ChukW for sure!).

I have 3 builders on here that really grab my attention when it comes to aircraft building particularly in the painting arena. I recently jumped back into aircraft modeling after a two year break from it but am still very active in the automotive area so I take alot of notes from those 3 individuals. That's not saying that there's not any others on here I learn from because there are alot of great modelers not only here but on the other forums I frequent. If I had just one that I had to pick from any where? It would have to be John Teresi from Model Car Magazine forum hands down. This guy's imagination coupled with his abilities, particularly with scratchbuilding and Alclad usage, are "the" best I've ever seen and I pattern alot of my builds after his thought processes.

Same for me. Tony really started me to think about weathering. I have learnt a lot from Karl even if he has differant aims from me and Bill has really helped me progress.

Next year will be my 40th year modeling.  I've never seen better than this guy (John Vojtech)  Look at the C-130, and other photos of this model on the web. Look at the engines.  I think this model won 1st overall  at nationals if I'm not mistaken.  There aren't many that come close.

There are F1 modelers, not on this site, that are in my opinion the best modelers of any genre.  Mind blowing in fact.

Well;

    That is a simple answer . All the great modelers who came before me and the ones who grew up at the same time I did .

   When you think about it . Every model builder who builds kits should first and foremost be thankful for - Tool and Die makers .Their skill made it possible for the first plastic model to become a reality .

    Backwards and inside out at that ! Now going forward , the teachers that didn't build , But showed me how . The companies that got my hard earned pennies , dimes , nickels and half dollars to  build what they marketed .

 Shoot , did I really need all those REVELL " Victory at Sea " kits ? Or the Aurora F-111 Aardvark .With working landing gear AND fold back wings ? No , But, yes too . I wanted something to do that helped me learn about engineering and design .

 I didn't look at it that way but that's what it was . Thanks to Shep , Juha and others  I build today with fond memories and a few in places of honor . Now I just build for me . Gee ain't those storied modelers something ?  T.B.
