I think Future should be considered as paint and as such allowed. Since spray cans are also OK, there is an alternative to paintbrushes..! Still, it should not be that easy to get a nice two-tone finish, but I'll try!

Could not find my 1/48 F-18 in the shops either, but I'm hoping to get one off e-Bay in 2 days... It's an Italeri kit, and the guy selling it is including no less than 2 sets of brass and a resin seat...! I can always trade those back on e-Bay and get my money back that way I guess! Ha! But just in case, I purchased a 1/72 F-18...

Hello everyone,

Future seams like a reasonable stretch of the imagination[:0]. Do we have everything on the list that we need? Pretty soon we will have our entire workbench on the list (just kidding). I certainly appreciated the friendly reminder about clearing off the workbench of any "unapproved" tools the other day. I'm sure I will need more reminders as we move along.

I have yet to obtain my model. To tell the truth, I haven't even gone looking for it yet. I know I had one in my blackhole of a collection somewhere. Oh well, thats another story. I work best under pressureCool [8D]

I've been extremely busy trying to wrap up a project that I'm working on. I have hardly had time to come to the forum except late at night. I suspect the frequency of our visits to diminish a bit during the build. At least mine will. If you guys don't slow down I will begin to wonder if you have jobs.

Hi, All,

I tried to see if I could find another kit at a Hobby Lobby ( big craft store with a pretty good model selection ) but did not. That's not the store I got mine at, but there was only the one where I found mine.

I thought I could offer it to whoever, first come first serve, to mail/sell it to anyone who could not find one. I suppose one could get it as quickly by mail over the web.

But do we need to take inventory, if anyone without a kit by Friday, should we postpone start date?

By the way while I was in that Hobby Lobby I couldn't resist picking someting up! 1/48 Monogram F-86D Dog Sabre ( I don't know what the "Dog" means, maybe some of you do). So, see what you guys made me do? ( Insert Smile picture, I haven't figure out how to do that yet...)

Maybe this will help - FAQ - How can I use smilies and images? Smile [:)]

That was very nice of you looking around for an additional F-18 kit. Although you didn't find one, it's greatly appreciated!

I haven't looked yet - I've been really sick the past couple of days. However I'm fairly confident I'll find one. There are a bunch of hobby shops in the area. I'll be amazed if I can't find one kit. If I don't, I'll just have to go online.

About the start date - I don't know. It would be great to start on Friday. Even if someone doesn't have a kit at that time (which could be me), there's an entire month to complete it. The way I look at it, this isn't a competition - so it doesn't really matter when it starts, if it's completed, how it looks, if it's painted, etc. In fact, I would love to see someone start an F-18 kit six months from now because of our project discussions.

I hope that these project discussions will over time become a useful resource for other modelers. Even well after the project has been wrapped up.

This sounds very interesting. . .but,
The Revell Monogram FA18C was discontinued, it is now the Blue Angels FA18 and of course molded in blue. Could I use the decals I saved from the FA18C on the Blue Angels FA18 or do I have to build the Blue Angels aircraft?
I used aftermarket decals on the FA18C for my niece (USN VFA-131 Wildcats).
You guys can make the call, either way I'm in. . .I have the kit already.
BTW, your tool list is about all I have on my bench so I won't be cheating.
We do a build the same kit in our local club and always have a good turn out.
As for posting photo's. . .maybe my son can help there, he's much more savvy than I am on the is computer.

Doh!! Didn't realize the Revell Monogram kit was discontinued.

I may be going out on a limb here, but since no one disagreed over opening it up to any variants of the F-18, I don't think the Blue Angels kit would be a problem.

With the first project - we're going to jump right into it and "wing it" (hehe...) as we go along. I'm sure there will be a lot of discussion after the project is complete about what worked and what didn't. Regardless, the important thing is to have fun.

BR, thanks for pointing to the help on smiles and images. Smile [:)]

I would also agree to any F-18 variant. We certainly don't want anyone left out for that reason. As you say, the emphasis is on to have fun.

As for posting pictures, for this first build I might help with that if so desired. I have some web space with my ISP and, assuming it is enough space, if people email me images I can post them and share the URL when done. I'm no web master and it might not be fancy, but could get the job done.

One day to go..! Still haven't got my 1/48 F-18, but the e-Bay auction only terminates tomorrow morning, so I keep my finger crossed and I might have a kit early next week. Agreed with BR, does not matter if I start a bit late. Taking part is the most important thing. I might still start the 1/72 kit in the meantime...

Still no kit for me either, but let's not hold everyone up on that account. I'll get one some way or another! Off to Wal-Mart tonight to see if I can get the blue-angels version.

Yeah, my thread took on more life than I ever could have imagined, Darren. I'm still waiting for more than just Tamiya to tell us they were there. There's 10 other manufacturers with invitations so far.

I've noticed that the only F/A 18C kit getting mention is the Revell- Monogram one. While time does not permit me to participate in this particular CBP, I'd like to at least give participants a couple of options in the way of Hornets kits if the Revell Monogram one isn't readily available.

I believe Italeri's 1/48 C Hornet is still out there, it has Swiss air force markings, so that gives you a bit of option over American Hornets if you want it (I've also heard it contains Spanish and Finn markings, but I can only say it has Swiss for certain).

This kit may also be out under the Testor label as well as the two companies are affiliated. It really depends what area you live in I guess, Testor labeled kits are pretty rare in my area but Italeri labeled ones are quite plentiful.

Hope that helps give a couple more options to participants in this one

What ever you do stay away from the AMT kit. . .the smell from the box should keep you away, but I had a cold that day. . .it is one stinker of a kit. It is more like a 1/40th scale kit than 1/48.

Won my F-18 on e-Bay, so I'm only a couple of days away from starting the thing! My kit is the 1/48 Italeri offering of the F-18E. Don't know if it's any good, but I have it..!

By the way, Revell also proposes a F-18E at that scale... Might be worth investigating...

I got the Testors F-18 from Walmart last night (last one on the shelf). Looks like it can be in either the F-18A (single seat) or F-18B (dual seat) configuration. I think I'll go with the F-18B version since there are Canadian decals in the kit for this configuration! (I'm such a proud Canadian).

I've also considered building an F-18 with a 'custom' paint job. I don't expect that's against the rules, but would anybody disagree?

Hello all,

Here's a thought. When we start posting pictures of our models they will be available for all the world to see. Other than my family and people who visit the house, not many eyes have seen my work. Now it will be on display for everyone to see and judge. That's very nerve racking. This should be fun.

Well, I'm gonna jump in a bit late here and see what I can get done in eight days. Maybe I'll surprise myself... and maybe I'll take a few days off of school ;) I seem to remember an Italeri F-18 laying around in my pile somewhere...

Prost!

Welcome aboard Panzerknacker,

Glad to have you here. We officialy started on 2/7/03. If I recall correctly, we set the ending date for 30 days. So you have to 3/7/03, just think what you can do with all that extra time. Be sure to keep everyone posted in the F-18 CBP thread.

Goodluck

Panzerknacker,

I am maintaining a web page of pictures that any participants send me of their progress, and hopefully pictures from everyone of their finished projects, if everyone has the ability to create or scan photos.

The page is at http://www.safeplace.net/darienk/cbp.html

You can mail me at darienk@safeplace.net

Hello TomM. ... Smile [:)]

Please allow me to extend an "unofficial" welcome to the first Community Building Project ...

This CBP is alas in the final days of construction ... as you have read, by agreement, construction of the first CBP kit ... a 1/48 scale F/A-18 HORNET a/c ends on 7, March, 2003.

Hope you will keep checking this topic in the FSM community forum ... we would welcome your input as to the next CBP or the one after that ... you can join at anytime. I think we have discussed building a Ferrari automotive kit ... but, I do not think this has been "written in stone" ... you may have noticed the members of the CBP try real hard to avoid writing anything in stone. Wink [;)]

Anyway ... great to see another scale model builder showing interest in the CBP !!! Big Smile [:D]

Nope!

You did not miss speak, I'm just a perpetual wise guyBig Smile [:D]. I think we had more of a loose agreement, if there is such a thing? I'm pretty sure we should do something completely different than aviation though. I can't believe I just said that.

I like that ... loose agreement ... yes, that's the ticket ... things always seem to work better with a loose agreement rather than something written in stone.

Perhaps your hands shake at the thought of doing something other than an a/c ... and mine ... well, if and when we do a figure ... and I think we should at some point ... well, just let me leave it at this ... the one and only time I did a figure ... it didn't make it to the display case ... in fact, I am not sure it is still around here ... maybe over there in the bottow drawer of the file cabinet ... nope not there ... must have tossed it ... it was really that bad ... but, I am game to try again. It's all good !

'Loose' is a good thing...

I expect I won't get more time until the weekend to finish mine. I'm looking forward to a change of venue also. I've never built a figure either and to be honest, they're not really all that common around here (at least what I've seen). Someday, I would like to try one of them Gundam robot thing guys though...

I'll need extra time too guys... Big shows coming up and customers are needing lots of stuff done, so my F-18 took a back seat (figurely only). Still, after what I've seen of this kit, I'm not recommending it to anyone.. Looks really nice in the box, on the sprues, but the fit is quite attrocious! I need my Milliput..!!!!!
