Static Grass

Who makes it that looks good, and all seasonal colors, and in large bottles instead of little pouches. And then who here has actually used it and had a good experience with it? I have seen it applied on you tube or my space or somewhere in the universe, but they don't show the complete grounding process.

All gave some and some gave all.

Scenic Express has all kinds of grasses, from simple static grass in laerge quantities to uber-realistic self adhessive tufts.

The basic application of static grass is to paint your groundwork if it has not already been stained, appliy thinned white glue. sprinkel; on the grass, turn the base over to release the excess and blow across the top to stand it up.

Remember, if the women don't find you handsome, they should at least find you handy.

Sign - Ditto [#ditto]...but then, also, use your airbrush to spray various tints of greens, yellows and browns on the whole area to add diversity and depth of color and tone.

Also, I advise mixing up the whole lot of your grass material with larger tufts and pieces cut from longer strands of long railroad-type grasses that you can get in model railroad stores.

Thanks for the advice AJ & Doog, I went to thier website and found all kinds of neat grasses and trees, but could not believe the price on thier static grass dispenser, ON SALE NOW!!! for only $189.99 Pirate [oX)]. I have seen homemade dispensers made out of butter tubbs with a groundwire attached for the bargin price of around $1.25, and they make the grass stand up as it hits the surface.

All gave some and some gave all.

I make my own grass using saw dust which is far more economical than buying commercial products.  Just gather some saw dust into several piles and stain each pile with diluted acrylic paint in various shades of green, brown and yellow.  Let dry for a day or two and then sift through a tea strainer.  The sifting breaks up the dried clumps.  I store each color separately and then mix them on the diorama base as needed using diluted white glue.

I often use real dirt which I also sift so that it is very fine.  I apply this to the base using white glue and airbrush with various shades of acrylic paint.  I then apply the grass.

This produces an excellent grass for 1/35 scale and smaller.

I was looking at the Scenic Express website--would any of that be good for 1/35 scale tall field grass?  I was looking at the SILFLFOR High Pasture--but the 8mm length isn't going to be anywhere near waist high.

Basically, I'm looking for an "easy" way to make a 3"x5" or 6"x9" field of 1/35 scale waist-high grass....any suggestions, experiences, etc???  I've read about the "drill-and-plug" method with the Woodland Scenics tall grass, but I think that would look like exactly that...a drilled hole plugged with fake grass.  Has anyone tried this?  Pictures would be appreciated!  Thanks in advance!

Rather than using Woodland Scenics and the like, I head out to Wally World or Ace and buy some cheap 4-inch paintbrushes to use the bristles for tall grass... I use the "drill & plug" as well, but I don't put the tall grass in until the short grass is in there and solid...  The only hard part is remaining "conciously random" in placing the clumps...  The other material I use a lot of is unraveled hemp rope...
