peanut butter lid dioramas
Posted by vespa boy on Thursday, December 20, 2007 9:23 AM

A couple of years ago on another forum Virgil Suarez suggested an exercise: make a diorama that fits onto the lid of a peanut butter container (no scale or subject restrictions). It's a way of building something quickly and compressing an idea into a small space. It has taken off in a formal way in some competitions. I don't know if it was shared on this forum or not, but I recommend it as a fun thing to do. If you have built one, please share.

The variety was amazing and so was the imagination in each of them.

This is mine, a kerb from Cambridge MA:

Looks good! What do you use for your brickwork?

What a great little exercise. Looks good. Looks like the city needs to send the sweepers out! Smile,Wink, & Grin [swg]

That's a great idea actually. It would allow for good practice of balance and composition. Thanks for sharing.

I actually laughed out loud after I read this post and saw your work, vespa boy--for the sheer imagination of the challenge, and secondly, for the brilliant way in which you executed it.

Just brilliant! I swear, it looks like a photograph taken through a pinhole lense! AMAZING!

Did you notice the tire tread next to the white line where someone drove over the wet paint?

Thanks for the feedback.

I really recommend the peanut better lid as an exercise.

The brickwork was done by carving plaster, and painted using artists oils.

What looks like a tyre track on the paint is something else. In Cambridge, at some point a lot of the street markings were made up of lots of small diamonds, and these markings have worn down and been repainted.
