Fiat G.55 Silurante - finished pics
Posted by razordws on Saturday, February 28, 2009 8:14 PM

This is the old Supermodel 1/72 G.55 Silurante model that I just finished for the Regia Aeronautica GB.  Built pretty much straight out of the box with MM enamels.  I believe that just one prototype of this torpedo version was built.  Enjoy and comments welcome.

Nice work, Dave.  Very interesting camouflage pattern.  I had not seen a model of that airplane before, with the torpedo.

Dave-

Ok, thanks a lot!  Now I am seeing spots everywhere I go, and IT'S ALL YOUR FAULT!!!

Seriously, well done- can't believe you have the patience and steady hand to AB that freehand in 1/72- simply amazing. Bow [bow]

Hi razordws,

Call me dumb, but how did you get that great camo, I've got the same model, but have been intimidated by the colour scheme.

Cheers Leo

Sign - Ditto [#ditto] as with most Italian schemes.  How DID you do that?

The G.55 S with the torpedo was a one off experimental version which actually survived the war. The underwing radiators were specially modified in this version. My only comment with your build is that the Italians used a light pale green similar to the British interior green and not a dark interior green. Sometimes the wheel wells were painted with the lower surface light blue gray instead of the interior green. Here's a link to an excellent color guide.

BTW this pattern has a name its called the Lizard patern and was developed by FIAT for the aircraft they built.

Very nice! The camo is superb. I have always liked the looks of the G.55 with the torpedo. Excellent job! Thumbs Up [tup]

Thanks everyone for your comments.  Much appreciated.

Telsono, thanks for the information and the link.  I'll take both into consideration for the next Italian build.

For those that asked.  The camo was acheived by spraying a base coat of Italian Olive Green followed by freehanding Italian Sand in splotches using a paasche H airbrush.  A bit of patience is also required Wink [;)]

Dave,

Some superb airbrush work there, came out beautiful!  Can't believe that plane got off the ground with that torpedo slung underneath!

RJK went over 15,000 posts. I think that was the most ever, and they were all good ones.

telsono, luftwaffle, El Jere.

Jeremias was a fellow on the Malvinas Falklands GB and hurrah for that an Argentine.

He sent me hard to find Neptune decals that I used in the Latin American GB later.

Model Geek disappeared after less than 400 posts, yet he did quality work on this odd Swedish aircraft:

Regrettably, razordws does not mention if he painted the mottle free hand

I just picked up the old Supermodel kit from a stash re-sale in a LHS; been inspired by razordws' build and Vance Crozier's work of painting the mottle using bits of UHU poster tack as masking.

I think Vance's paint job turned out quite good.Big SmileYes

Yep, looking at THAT one, wish I'd gotten my spots a little smaller. Still happy the method worked for me though.

Dave - A right gorgeous build, among the best camo work I've seen. I'm guessing the tan went on first, then the green???? Would you mind sharing what airbrush you used, or was there more than one involved in the process? I really enjoyed seeing this one, thanks for the post and photos.
