WIP kitbashing MPM XP-47H and Academy P-47B
Posted by Borg R3-MC0 on Tuesday, August 11, 2009 7:08 AM

My current WIP is a 1/72 XP-47H.

Starting point for this build is the MPM kit. It is an old short run kit and not up to todays stansards. My first idea was to use the details from an academy kit, such as gear and cockpit. But after reading some reviews and looking at pictures from XP-47H's it became obvious the the MPM kit is inaccurate. I than changed the plan to grafting the nose of the MPM kit on the academy kit.

Thanks to another forum member I got some plans of the XP-47H (thanks again dogsbody!) Looking at those plans I found that not only the nose but also the belly of the MPM kit should be grafted on the academy kit. This is my current plan. Below is the picture of the two kit and the places the cuts are going to be made:

Goals of this operation are twofold:

1) take benefit of the better detail of the academy kit

2) making a more accurate model, the MPM is the correct lenght but the belly is to "fat" and the air scoop to far forward.

I saw a model of that bird done many years ago, and I gotta say that you certainly picked a great subject... G'luck with the kit-bash.. I'm looking forward to this one!

Sign - Ditto [#ditto] I am also looking forward to this one.  Don't see this subject modelled often.

You got me interested now. I have the MPM XP-47H and the Airmodel Vac fuselage. I will have to compare them; maybe the Airmodel is more accurate.

Sounds like a great project. Good luck with it. Do you have any pics of what the finished article should look like?

It should look something like this:

I having been looking at various pictures of the two protoypes (223297 and 223298) Most pictures out there are of 223297. These pictures are intresting because the configuration of changes.

Here is another picture of 223297

Notice the different intakes behind the cockpit. And the the diffrence in the painting of the chin intake. (my theory is that it was swapt with the intake of 223298  )

I have made the cuts and glued the pieces, I wil make and post some pics shortly.

Looking good, Borg.  The red type in the pic is difficult to read, however.

Thanks for sharing.

Woah, what a crazy cool looking plane. Sort of takes the muscle look of the P-47 away.

She is coming along nicely and you got a great start on it.

The comments on the pics are fine but like said earlier the red is hard to read and possibly the letters are a bit small as well (this could be my eyes or computer). just a suggestion though.

Keep going this is truely an original idea.

Thanks for the kind words. The help of another FSM forum members, Dogsbody, has been crucial in this build. He supplied me with a set of plans which I needed for this conversion.

Nice conversion Borg. Seems to have worked out pretty well. =]  It's good to see an experimental model every now and then.

Anytime! I don't get much model building done and I kind of suck at it, but I always like to help out whenever I can.

Looks awesome! I've wanted to build one but seems both this kit and the 1/48th one are long out of production. Well, maybe someday I'll get around to trying to find one. Kudos sir!

Hadn't seen either you R3-MC0 or Dogsbody around in awhile, hope you guys are well.

Always nice to see a shelf queen get back to the front of the line. And completed in such fine fashion. Nice!

Amazingly well done on that kitbash. You wouldn't know it was two kits if you didn't mention it. Great job!!

The last few years have been a bit busy but I've recently retired so will probably be popping in more often. I've been well and of fairly good health for an old geezer.

That came out very nice.  I built the MPM kit out of the box a long time ago and I can see that it's shape is not near as good as yours done the way you did it.
