The Catalinas are good kits, the A-10 for the money is the best out there, the F9F builds up nicely as does A-1

the F-4 is pretty good as well.

Thanks all for your answers !

I knew those Revell - Monogram kits were popular, but not THAT much !  Wink

I must tell you that I've never completed a 1/48 scale aircraft yet (tried to build the TBF Avenger, also from Revell - Monogram, but had lots of problems fitting the wings that I put the kit away for now ... Angry )

I've narrowed my choices a bit, and here they are :

Mosquito Mk IV RCAF
Pro : one of my top fav fighter of WWII ! Con : a bit on the pricey side of the cheap scale

Hawker Typhoon Mk IB
Pro : cool looking fighter Cons : I read online people telling about some fit issues (is it true ?)

P-39 Airacobra
Pro : cool looking, easy paint scheme Cons : I already have the Academy kit of this plane in 1/72 scale

Bf-109 G-10
Pro : I read online about it's ease of assembly Cons : complicated paint scheme

I have till next Friday to decide ...

You might try searching for reviews on each kit (not only on Finescale Modeler) to help decide.

The Mosquito is (probably) a re-issue of the Monogram kit, and it has some shape issues with the tail-planes and spinners (and probably a few other areas).  It's definitely not the most accurate of the Mosquito kits, but still builds up into a very nice model.  Depends on how important accuracy is to you.

I have two in the stash and will build one out of nostalgia someday.

The Avenger is apparently not a 1:48 scale aircraft, but closer to 1:50 to 55 scale.  I bought one recently for the decals, as it was cheaper to buy the kit than a decal sheet!

My last two builds were Monogram P-47s, and they're great kits.

I have two Typhoons currently in my stash, but have not built one in over 30 years, so I can not address any fit issues firsthand...

The 109G-10 is a similar story- I built it originally when it was first released by Revell (it is an original Revell modling from when the two companies were very seperate) back in the late 70s. Again I have one in my stash yet to be built. May I ask what you find complicated about the paint scheme? Usually the kits come with more than one marking option/paint scheme choice.

My Mossie built straigh OOB with Aeromaster decals- looks like a Mossie to me

My Airacobra, with some Ultracast exhaust stacks, Ultracast seat, Cutting Edge Decals. This kit has really held up well for 40+ years.

If you are concerned about price, I suggest you that if there is a Hobby Lobby near you, you look at their selection with their 40% off coupon. I do not know if Michaels ( I believe that is the store that you mentioned where you saw these kits)  offers a similar discount, but if they do....Whistling

Good memories they are!

I wish they would put their 1/48 A-4 back out. Pops built that one way back when, and it's still a nice looking kit.

Misssissippivol, I just bought two off ebay - 1976-1977 era. PM me if you want one.

Yes Michael's offers 40% off coupons as well as 25% off entire transactions, usually more often  than hobby lobby...I don't know if they're doing it anymore either but when I worked there a couple years back if you gave them your email they'd give you a 40% off on the spot.

Thats good info to have Josiah. Thank you. I went to our local Hobby Lobby yesterday and they had the Revell P-47N on clearance. Too bad I already have the Academy N in my stash, and was more tempted by the Academy 1/35 MH-60 (incorractly labeled as a AH-60) also on clearance. There is a Micheals nearby as well...

Stik, your Mossie is one great looking bird ! Wow !  Smile

And no, it's not a Hobby Lobby (I don't think they have stores in Canada) or a Michaels (but thanks for the info, as I will check the 40% coupons).

It's a toy store with a large selection of RC planes, model trains and plastic kits.

They also carry a huge selection of Tamiya products (paints, masking tape, glue) and Testors.

And since it's only a 15 minutes drive from where I live ...  Devil

Since I build out of the box (most of the time) the paint scheme isn't all that difficult, especially if you keep it lose.  Besides, you can NEVER have too many 109's, get it!

At the ripe old age of 10, I built my first airplane model, the Monogram P-61.  This is probably why I automatically assumed all model planes were hard to build up to match the box pictures....lol.  My buddy and I collectively built it over a weekend and I still cherish this 30+ year old memory (we are still the best of friends to this day).  Suffice to say, I will always have a soft spot for this kit, and I recent found a circa 1974 sealed version on E-bay cheap!

If I were to choose the best Revell/Monogram kit, I would have to go with the 1/48 He 111.  Its a beauty right from the box  and stands up to anything from the "Tamigawa faction".  I have 4 in my stash and will certainly do another one soon.      I don't know if its in production anymore but they do re-release it time an again.

Stick and Reasoned, nice work!

The p-61 is also one of my favorite. I built 2 as a kid maybe it's just time foging my memory but I don't remember it being that bad. Or maybe the eyes of a child with a new toy :).

After a twenty-five  break my first was the 109g-10 and then the p-61 which is work in progress.

New revell kit. I just left my local hobby shop and I picked up a biplane from the 30s called a

Stearman pt-17 in 1/48  kit # 85-5264 they just got them in. I know nothing of this kit is it a  re release ?

It's molded in bright white. The detail is nice the inner halves of the fuselage has full frame work molded in. Pluss a full tube frame to build. The engine  fully exposed and represented in high detail.

I must say there are some very finely molded parts. there are struts and rods that are some of the thinnest I have ever seen from revell.

They also had releases of revell in 1/48 of hellcats and zeros

Sry dew to issues I can't post pics.

Yes, that is a new mold, new tooled kit. The only other Stearman in 1/48 is the Lindberg kit from way back when. This new one came in under the radar. I don't remember reading any buzz about it until it was about to be released.  I am curious what else that they have up their sleeves....

I'd say go for it, but with a caveat............get the older Revell or Monogram kits, and some of the Revell/Monogram kits, but stay away from the newer Revell kits even if its the older kits with the new Revell lable. Why do I say this? My most recent experience with them left a foul taste in my mouth and pushed me to the decision to NOT to buy anything new from Revell. I made the effort to contact Revell for some replacement parts and I was ready to pay for them, I got told it was not thier problem and that I needed to contact the retailer I bought the kits from to get the kit replaced ( I bought the Avenger and Dauntless and BOTH came with malformed/deformed parts), no parts for me, either as replacements or bought by me to replace them.

Revell will NEVER get another dime from me

Yours is definitely not the norm for most folks on here USMC in dealing with their customer service. I had just the opposite experience with them earlier this month. I broke off and lost a part during construction. They replaced it free of charge.

My favorite kits...

I wouldn't know where to start.

That F-80 is wonderful.

I have a 50's kit of the "Long John" Dragster. Pure stock, bought it for MM II but when that went south, put it back in the stash.

The 1/48 B-26.

The 1/72 B-52, and the B-36.

We think that's Hammer in the helmet...

Most recent builds:

OK, not pure stock. I swapped in a Tamiya 251 rear end to get better acceleration in sand....

Those last three are 1/72. Little tea cup deals. Painted only with Testors enamels in the little square bottles, but I did use a good brush.

(under construction)

Modeling is an excuse to buy books.

@stikpusher, the funny thing is back in the years I was really building a lot I used to get truely wonderful service from Revell and Monogram, then my last experience really changed my mind about the recent change in whos the owner and some other things, but it is what it is.

On another better note, I won the old Monogram A-7 Corsair II off evil bay last night, if I remember correctly it builds up pretty nice too.

And to clarify, I bought a good number of the Renwal Heritage kits before my experience and they were all top notch, the Nike Hercules, Atomic Cannon, TeraCruizer and a few others, but the tretment I got wasnt the kind of treatment that gets you a good returning customer
