Stuka decal question
Posted by BrandonK on Tuesday, July 8, 2014 4:41 PM

I just received a hasegawa Ju-87B-2 Stuka that I got "used" from Ebay. The contents are complete and the packages are unopened but the kit is older. The decals are clean and flat but the German Cross and Swastika have white areas in them and these appear "aged". ie, they are not white, yet they are not yellow either, more off white or antique. So, are these supposed to be "white" or this off white that I see? Do I need new decals for this kit is really what's important here?

They are supposed to be white.

Tape it up in a sunny window for a couple of weeks, one that doesn't get condensation at night.

They should be white. But if its not that off white, depending on whether your going to weather it, you may not have to worry. My only concern would be how the decals will react when you try and put them on. You could play safe and get some AM decals.

I am a Norfolk man and i glory in being so

The old, i.e. 1990s, early 2000s Hasegawa kit decals were always a bit poor. The white was always printed as a dirty off white for whatever reason, even when the kit was new. I would go aftermarket if it bothers you.

Well, I got it cheap so I'm not really all that worried about it. I'm going to build it later and will most likely be going with a dark scheme, but the B-2 Trop with the snake looks kinda cool so I make go that direction. As long as they don't look "wrong" on the plane and I weather it I guess it really doesn't matter much. Come to think of it on a weathered Trop it might look better than pure white.

thanks for your help guys, I appreciate it.

I'm about to start the same kit for which I got off E-bay too.  The white on my decals is also yellowing.  I recommend you avoid Hasegawa decals which are generally thick and hard to work with anyways.  That snake will be a nightmare.  Sprue Brothers has a great selection of B-2 decals as does E-bay.  I'd go that route Brandon.

I'm kinda thinkin' a North Africa theme on this build. I have a dogfight set that are both set for North Africa  and I think this would make a great addition to them. I'm gonna hit SprueBros for a set I like. Not the snake, ya that would be an exercise in hate and discontent.

With Hasegawa decals? No doubt! I just used the instrument panel decal on my Stuka and it gave me problems. The decal distorted a bit under Micro-solution, so I had to use clear epoxy on the lens to simulate glass which helped hide it.

Speaking of instrument panels. I just got a Promodeler P-51B/C that has been started with interior painting in places and such. But, the instrument panel looks life like. ie the dials look real and have glass like lenses. I'm sure this is not how the kit came and was done by the person who started it. Does that mean its aftermarket or likely punched out and custom built? It looks really nice. Better than any AM piece I've ever seen. Any ideas how this can be done?
