I wasn't going to monkey around with rivets n such on this 1:72 scale try. I scribed the panel lines on the stabilizer fins so I could use those to mask off to and them paint.
I was thinking about that tho......metalizers don't like to be masked over.....so I'm not quite sure how I'm gonna do the 3 remaining panels, being that the fore and aft are the same "color" and the one in the middle is different.
I was gonna tackle that last tho....next up is the masking for the sea cammo scheme....
Was wondering how you were tackling the burnt metal panels near the exhaust. The old mold Hasegawa F-4E doesn't have much detail in that department. I tried to simulate the separate panels with paint but it didn't come out well.

Its usually gloss or semi-gloss black. You'll have to check some reference pics to see how far back it goes. Are you working off a painting guide from the instructions, or a decal sheet scheme??
All righty then....36622 is on. Wheels and centerline tank are hung. Armament is ready to hang. Question....the black nosecone....about how far back does the black go? Is it gloss....flat....?

Tail fin pitot tube taped off so I don't bust it off.....AGAIN......no problem with the fuel dump....yet!
Lessons learned on Phantom builds - ya gotta have the panel lines on the stab wings....<is that what they're called?> raised or scribed.....as guides for shooting the different colors/metalizers. I imagine it would be MUCH EASIER to work on these suckers separate from the airframe......and can I say....you guys who build on commission must have the patience of saints to get every little detail just so for your customers! Took me an hour to scribe these parts top and bottom <!> as the original raised lines were BARELY visible thru the primer.

Ok would NOT mask over metalizers. Color first. Got it.
Model Master metalizers can be fragile. I would mask over those, especially not the buffable kind
This'll be my 1st attempt with metalizers....how well do they stand up to being masked and then peeling all that away?
Just remember some metalizers don't like to be masked over, so paint those last.
Guys in our last Phantom GB did it both ways with equal results. I think it's a matter of what is more convenient for you Sarge.

Ok, masking for the undercarriage spray....started at the tail, and I'm thinking that it might be better to mask and "metalize" the tail end first rather than mask the "metalized" areas and shoot the color.
Tape is the starting point to mask for color shoot. Opinions?

Yeah, TER stands for Triple Ejection Rack and MER stands for Multiple Ejection Rack. Basically, a MER is a double TER.

For the record, the MERs and TERs I've seen were either white or grey. Depending on the time frame of your build, the "older" MERs and TERs were white, while the "newer" ones are grey.
If you Google either the acronym or the full name, there are plenty of images in both colors for you to use as references.

ok, TER & MER...acronyms for equipment racks?
Camo gray (FS36622)) is basically an off white. Pylons, TERs and MERs will also be FS 36622.
Ok, so paint the tanks cammo grey. Assuming the hardware they hang from will be white, like the ordinance racks, or should it all be grey?

Perhaps you could shed some light on how/where to hang these suckers. I have a pin vise with tiny ass drills for making holes and I have tiny ass strands of wire.....
For a SEA scheme- FS 36622 for the tanks was pretty standard
The tanks/pods that hang out from under the wings are green on top......
Does the centerline tank get painted all white on this sucker? Painting instructions do not indicate......

This'll be my 1st attempt at airbrushing a camoflage paint scheme. Am I better off painting the upper fuselage and then masking off for the undercarriage, or vice versa?
