NATO's LanceR: a Romanian MiG21 MF in 1/48

Time for a new project!   The kindly folks at Icaerodesign approached to review and build their recent conversion set that allows one to build a Romanian version of the famous MiG fighter.  They gave me an Eduard "overtrees" kit, their resin conversion and and an extra baggie of resin treats.   In case you missed my review, you can see it here: or here.   Let's kick this off!

Chuck, I'm so grateful to see that I'm not the only one out there who's using beading tools to replicate rivets! When I explain things to others, I get really strange looks as if I had just admitted to having escaped from the lunatic asylum. But, the results are worth it! Looking forward to seeing how this build unfolds!

Pardon my ignorance, but what's a beading tool and where can I can 1 ?

Jay Jay - a beading tool is a standard fixture on a jeweler's bench. Essentially, it's a set of hardened steel shafts with small, cuplike divots machined into the end. After setting a stone, I use a cup burr in my motor tool to round off the prongs holding the stone in place, then use the beading tool to burnish the metal to a highly polished, smooth, round finish in order to keep the prong from snagging and pulling loose. For modelling, I took an old set off the bench at work and brought it home to use for making rivets and to round off brass stock when I'm building stuff from scratch. It works like a charm - you get even domed rivets that are flush with the surface to give a great effect. You can pick them up at jewelry supply houses like Rio Grande. They're a bit pricey, but they last a lifetime if used on soft metals (brass, aluminum, precious metals) and plastic.

Ty Knight for the info.

I have tried many different tools to make rivets in 1/48 scale , all of which where unsatisfactory to me.  Yours look like the ticket I'm looking for.  I hope I'm not going to get sticker shock when I find the price however.

Many thanks for all the kind words!

Friends, life has been really busy as of late- but good things are coming.   This may be my last update for a couple of months- we'll have to see what happens.  In the meantime, Kapitain Andreea is back to show you the latest.  Cheers!

Thanks, guys!  Well, we are moved in to our new home in Coupeville, on Whidbey Island in Washington!    Well, almost moved in.  We're expecting a Pod to get to Everett on Dec1- containing the first layer of stuff we had to pack to "stage" our Rdondo Beach house.  Guess what's in that pod?  Yup, the MiG, plus lots of other modeling and art supplies, to name but a small selection.  I'll get back to modeling next month, so please stay tuned!

Kapitan Andrea and I are back in gear! The move went well, and we're adapting to our new lives in a new home and anew place.  I won't say it was entirely easy, but we've persevered. I was able to get back to the bench in early December, but this is the first time I've been ready to post again- read on!

Chuk,

I've missed your great WIP/tutorials on building your aircraft kits and I'm delighted that you're back!!

I know there's a lot I'll be learning regarding your builds and, from now on, I'm gonna be taking notes Smile.

As a plodding plastic kit builder (both ships and aircraft) I'll never even approach the skill set that you and many others on FineScale possess but it's always interesting to watch your progress and ogle your "girls" Big Smile.

BTW, until I moved up to Salem, OR I'd lived in So. Cal. for 38 years. Most of one of those years was boat sitting aboard my boss' 42' sloop (chained to the dock for back rent) in slip Y10 at King Harbor Marina in Rodondo Beach. That was in '73 - the good old days!
