John and Gerhard

Thanks for stopping by. I have a feeling I will be posting more F-14s this year since I have 14 of them ( A,B and Ds) in my stash. Can you tell that I like the Tomcat?

Well done, PJ! I happen to be building an Academy -14A, and have been doing more clamping and putty work than I remember ever doing. I'm still excited to get those Sundowner decals on it, though.

Beautiful Tom Cat. I love it.

What do you guys think about the Academy 1/48 Bomb Cat compare to Revell and Hasagawa ?

Thanks C

I personally have not built the Academy Bobcat but the reviews give it positive marks. It does mention some fit problems but the Revell and Hasegawa have the same issue. The Academy Bobcat has tons of weapons that specially the Hasegawa doesn't have. It sounds like a good choice.

Toshi

Thanks for the positive comments.

PJ, all of your 'cats are stunning. I'll be refering back this should I get the nerve to try it. Aside from the early gun fighters (F-86,F-8), the F-14, as well as the A-10, are probably the only nozzles I'd consider building out of personal interest. Thanks for taking us along... Joe

This kitty turn out fantastic! I'm glad I was along for the ride. At least I have an idea of what to look out for once I dig into the Haseagawa Cats I have in the stash. Great job!

Thanks Joe for dropping by and commenting with some very kind words.

Take a peek over in ebay for the 1/72 Revell/Monogram kitties. They have excellent details and have great decals too. They pop up now and then as in kit# 4392 and 85-6866 and can be obtained for about $20, sometimes with free shipping. The Hasegawa 1/72 00626 is basically a small brother of the 1/48 I built and hope the fit issues are not carried over to the smaller scale.

I recently completed this 1/72 Revell cat # 85-6866 and it has some really nice molded details. The engine can details are very crisp.

Outstanding Tomcat PJ. You did a very beautiful job all around on it. I've been wanting a 1/72 Tomcat and I had just assumed that Hasegawa would likely be the best option but, it seems that I need to take a look at the Revell instead. Thank You for sharing not only your remarkable F-14 with us but, also your fabulous talent and skills.

John

Thanks buddy and hope you had a great New Year's day. I have several Monogram cats in my stash too. And as an added note, the Revell 1/72 Super Tomcat is a sweet kit. It has a beautiful detailed pit and recessed panel lines. I have a couple of them too. You can never have too many Tomcats.

Well the F-14 is finally completed, so here's a quick recap of the build. It was done OOB and the only added details were the Hasegawa missile set and Fightertown USA decals. It was painted with MM enamels and Metalizers for the engine cans. Flory Washes took care of popping the recessed exterior details. Oil washes popped the wheel well details.

Markings are for F-14A call sign "Whichita 103" from VF-1 Wolfpack stationed aboard the USS Ranger during Operation Desert Storm. On February 6, 1991, this aircraft shot down a Mi-8Hip with an Aim 9. The kill mark appears above the stardboard star and bars emblem.

All comments are welcomed and thanks for looking.

Plastic Junkie, thanks for the info.  I have a couple og Monogram F-14s in the stash, and do not need to add a Hasa one.  Thanks.  Happy New Year!

Joe, Gary and BK, thanks for stopping by and commenting.

John

As a matter of fact I have built several 1/48 Monogram/Revell Tomcats and I find the old Revell easier to build, weapons are included and the molded detail in the pit is simply outstanding. The exterior detail though being raised, is ok and the fit I find better than Hasegawa's. Revell's wings have a better fit and have the machanism to synchronize wing movement which Hasegawa lacks.

The Hasegawa costs more, has a ton of parts that could have been simplified as in the Revell one, no weapons are included and the pit detail is not as good as Revell's IMO. It does have recessed panel lines which helps to pop the weathering effect.

With all that said, IMO I rather deal with the Revell cat as it can be built into a stunner. Not long ago I built this Revell cat with aftermarket decals.

I have 2 Hasegawa cats in the stash, an A and D and I'm considering selling them because this has been a fairly involved build as compared to the Revell ones. I have heard great things about the 1/48 HB ones so I need to investigate those.

Hasegawa is still a very nice kit but I'm partial for the Revell offering.

Beautiful looking F-14, and really nice work on the missiles.  Quick question, since you commented on the fit issues.  How does this kit compare to the Monogram F-14s, assuming you have built one?  I built a couple of Monogram F-14s years ago, and the fit in the forward fuselage was pretty rough, but the cockpit was awesome.  Is the Hasegawa kit worth the extra money, especially when you consider it doesn't come with any ordanance?  Thanks.

Excellent work on the weapons array. The missles look sharp.
