Good looking Corsair. I love the camo scheme, we don't see those enough. Nicely done.

Thanks Brandon!  You should see the scheme for the Avenger on that decal set.  It's one of the best looking camo schemes I've ever seen.

My one regret in life is not being able to talk to him about it as an adult (he succombed to alzheimers and I spent most of my life in a different state).

I can completely empathize with you. My father and I had planned on recording his experiences and then submitting them to the National Archives. Unfortunately he passed away suddenly 8yrs ago before we could get started. Still burns in my craw that I missed out on that opportunity.

I'm getting set to get started on a Tamiya 1/72 F4U-1D Corsair myself. I'll be posting a WIP here in a couple of weeks.

That looks nice! I love the Corsairs in FAA colors.

The brits did know how to paint a really pretty airplane, didn't they?  In fact, they knew how to build em real pretty too.  The spitty is kind of the quintesential WWII plane, to me.  Looks fast sitting still.  All the RAF birds had a real cool - uniqueness? - to them.  Even the lancasters with their oddly shaped fuselages had some real aesthetic appeal.  Thanks for having a look at my build and thanks for your kind words!  Cheers!

Joe -

Thanks so much!  I've only done three camoflage scheme'd birds so far and this is by far the best.  My grandfather worked on corsairs aboard the USS Siboney at the end of the war and had plenty of good stories to share.  Him and I used to watch Baa Baa Blacksheep on Sunday afternoons and between the two I developed quite the affinity for the most beautiful gull winged aircraft ever made.  My one regret in life is not being able to talk to him about it as an adult (he succombed to alzheimers and I spent most of my life in a different state).

Thanks a ton for looking in on my build and for your kind words!  Cheers!

Outstanding Corsair! Excellent skill and technique overall. You certainly did the camo sheme justice.

I LOVE me anything Corsair. My father flew them as a flight instructor during the war.

Thank you for sharing.

May I be the first to compliment you on a job well done!  Beautiful bent wing bird, and I am curious where the Brits were flying a Corsair in that scheme.

John

Thanks a ton, Wolf!

She was damaged aboard HMS Victorious in February of 1945 (after the Victorious took part in hunting down the Tirpitz).  In June 1944 the Victorious was reassigned to the far east briefly, and in October of 1944 she was assigned to Pacific operations - so she most likely was aboard the ship in the IO/WestPac.  The Victorious was actually one of the Royal Navy ships that supported the American landing at Okinawa.

And were finally finished!  The canopy could be (a lot) better, but it'll do, I spose.  I need to dirty up the gear doors a little just to make em match the bottom a bit better - I think I'll go over them with a light coat of tamiya smoke.  Otherwise she's done.  The chipping was done with a sliver pencil and the antenna wire is stretched sprue painted with tamiya xf-56.  I did a sludge wash with pastels/water/dish soap (I like sludge washes for WWII aircraft that were sortied frequently and thus usually dirty and beat up).  The cockpit dials are hand painted and the glass was made with model master glass maker, all the signal/formation lights are tamiya clear red/yellow/green over model master chrome silver, and the engine is washed with AK interactive engine wash.

Thanks again for reading, and all tips/recommendations/comments are welcome.  I'll be posting pics of the B-25B I'm working on soon.  Progress is super slow as the old accurate miniatures kits require some special attention to make the interior parts work.

Cheers!

That's the first time I have seen this scheme, but I do like it and you're making a great job of it.

Regarding the hairspray chipping technique and two camo colors- I apply water to the first color painted about one hour after I applied it. Then seal it with a clear coat...let that dry, then mask over that to apply the second color. And again, about one hour after applying the paint, I apply the water to chip it. You can remove the masking before chipping the second color and then seal that in with clear coat. You'll find that there'll be a slight "edge" around the first color where the clear coat was applied, so before applying the clear coat over the second color, use some 1000 wet and dry emery paper/file just to knock the edges down to ensure a smooth finish.

I hope this makes sense?! Stick out tongue

Looking forward to seeing your end result!

Cheers,

Martin Smile

This build is super slow going due to some work/raising kids factors.  Plus I painted the circle over where the old style roundel was and completely botched it, so I had to fix that as well.  Anyway, the decals are down.  Next step is to paint that annoying circle on the wing again, then its gloss coat and weather.  Thanks for all the comments and compliments guys!

Great looking model and nice step by step of the base coat and pre-shading. I had to admit though, those early pictures of the yellow and red going on, I was thinking you were painting it to look like the Partridge Family bus.Big Smile

Thanks Toshi!

Another quick update:

I finished the prop (minus the weathering which will come later) and the 500 lb bomb.  I painted a base coat of insignia yellow under the olive drab then chipped it a bit and the effect looks pretty cool.  I hate painting ordinance from that era solid paint colors because whenever you see it in photo or video it always seems to be scuffed up pretty good.

I also fixed the delineation line between the top camo and the bottom sea gray.  While I was at it I toned down the pre-shading a bit.  Taking the masking tape and putty off also allowed a look at the engine which is also OOB.  It's hard to see but the push rods are painted semi-gloss black, which looks pretty cool.  After the paint it was washed with AK interactive engine oil weathering wash.

Next couple days will be clearcoats then its on to the fun stuff.

Thanks for all the responses, guys!

So I've got the preliminary camo scheme down.  The chipping did not work out as well as I thought.  The problem with this technique and a camoflage paint job is that it takes a while for the paint to cure before applying the blue tac mask - and in that time the paint you want to chip cures too much.  The result is that it either chips all the way or not at all - it was very difficult to get an appropriately faded and chipped look.  So I threw a basic paint job over it and post shaded some panels.  I really want the cowl area and wing roots to get most of the chipping - fortunately the cowl area did get chipped to a pretty appropriate level.

The next steps will be to apply a gloss coat, lay down decals, flat coat it, then chip it after the fact with diluted pre-shade paint and silver pencil, exhaust stains, weather the tires and gear, etc.

The pre-shade on the bottom turned out pretty good.  It may be a little too strong, so I'm considering toning it down when I fix the camo-sea gray deliniation line on the bottom of the fuselage.

The corsair is one of my favorite WWII birds already (partially for the unique gull wing and sleek lines and also because my grandfather worked on them aboard the USS Siboney), then you add the RAF camo scheme and it really makes the subject stand out.  I'd highly recommend this decal set for anyone who likes the old US warbirds but wants a unique take on them.

Cheers!

This is my Fave prop bird by far. Sometimes I preshade, sometimes I don't. It would be curious to see how the colors alter the blue top coat.

Even preshaded and with patches of odd color, you just gotta love the looks of a Corsair. Looking forward to seeing the final result in non-standard colors.

I know preshading goes in and out of fashion, but I tried it on my last build for the first time and I liked it. Subtlety is the key, of course -- lots of examples of overdone preshading out there. The nice thing is that you can always add more topcoat to tone it back.

Also have had good luck with chipping as you are preparing to do -- though I find it difficult to get the chips "small" enough.

Harp -

This is going to be a great build.....As for your WIP, I wouldn't fear messing up around here. I just got done doing my first build and first WIP and I am glad I did....I messed up as I knew I would and got a ton of great tips, techniques, suggestions and support. I strongly believe you will get the same from everyone who looks in. Everyone here has been great and fully understand we do this because we enjoy the hobby. Anyway, looking at your photos you have nothing to fear or be a shamed of....It looks great so far.

Make sure to post photos so we can watch the build along with you and just dig in and have fun. I'll be watching so that I may pick up a thing or two Big Smile

Tamiya F4U-1A 1834 NAS - WIP Pics
Posted by harp.ta on Monday, February 29, 2016 11:54 PM

I've never actually posted WIP pics on a forum before (mostly for fear of screwing up and having to either explain it or post pics of a messed up build).  But, I'm trying a new method of pre-shading and hoping to get some feedback on the progress/results.  It's Tamiya's 48 scale F4U-1A built straight OOB except for the decals; for those I went with one of the Xtradecal "Yanks with Roundels" sets (I actually have a Eduard F6F-5 Profilpack and an Academy TBM-1C on my shelf so I'll probably use the set for all 3).  I skipped the construction pics because it's a Tamiya kit and it practially falls together anyway (although I wish I had some of the cockpit which is probably the finest OOB cockpit I've done to date).

I put down a coat of Tamiya surfacer over the completed kit after masking off the engine and wheel wells.  I then pre-shaded with black over panel lines, etc, and filled in some of the panels on the topside with flat white.  This is where the experimentation begins...

I was inspired by a build of a dauntless over on britmodeler where the builder decided to block off colors then chip them off slightly to expose the underlying colors.  So I blocked off a few of the panels in chromate yellow and flat red.  Tomorrow I'm going to put down a coat of hairspray then paint the camo scheme and chip it.

I also pre-shaded the bottom of the aircraft and then blocked out some brown chunks to hopefully give it a dirty appearance that goes deeper than an oil wash (we'll see if this actually shows up on the finished product or not).
