Gamera

Looks neat Toshi but I can't see the first photo. Am I the only one here with that problem?

Thanks Gamera!  Something with photobucket messed up the first photo and I can't edit it out.  Sorry about that.

Once again another beautiful piece of work. Toshi, you are a model making machine.

Thank you sir.  I don't know if it's a piece of art, but I definately enjoyed the build as well as it's final outcome.

Here is the completed PBY.  It went together like a Tamiya or an Kitty Hawk. I do recommend this kit.

Toshi,

Please forgive this off topic quick reply to Joe Rix who said:

"The PBY is one of my favorite all time aircraft and that is because my father flew them. He was a flight instructor stationed at Pensacola NAS during the war."

Well, my dad did not fly PBY's although they are one of MY favorite aircraft. However, My dad was in Pensacola, Florida during the war. Just not WWII - it was WWI Big Smile. He was a mechanic, test pilot, trainer and whatever else they wanted him to be. He flew JN4's.

Mike

No problem at all, nothing to forgive.  It's all good.  Thank you for sharing.  I'm always learning.

the Baron

I'm just getting caught up on your build now, Toshi, and it looks great!

As far as pre-shading goes, I agree with the other poster who noted that if you don't see it that much, it's not a loss.  I agree to look at photos of the period, and I think you'll see that fading is going to be more important.  Though as an exercise, it doesn't hurt to try the pre-shading, of course.

And speaking of fading, I wouldn't worry about using intermediate blue instead of blue gray, either.  If you're going to weather your Cat, then the intermediate blue really just provides a base.  You could apply lightened coats until it looks right.  That's my take on it.  Same goes for olive drab, too.  The paint right out of the jar is just a starting point for me.

I look forward to your next update!

Best regards,

Brad

the baron, the information provide is priceless.  I will definately make a file on this.  Thank you for your help.

JOE RIX

Hello Toshi, I regret that I have not been around the forums much for awhile and haven't been able to follow some of your builds. That's what happens when you remodel your house and in the process move into a new "Man Hangar". Thus, I haven't done any modeling in the past 3 months.

Anyway, I am very very excited to see you build the PBY-5. The Monogram PBY kit is the one kit in my stash that I am most excited to not only build but, do my best work on. I  actually have 3 of the PBY-5 kits, 1 PBY-5A and the Pro Modeller PBY-5A. The PBY is one of my favorite all time aircraft and that is because my father flew them. He was a flight instructor stationed at Pensacola NAS during the war. Although he flew pretty much everything the Navy had, he really loved the PBY. I have over the years collected a slew of AM for my PBY and some day when I'm confident in all of my skills I will build it up real nice to honor my father.

You've done some really nice work so far. I'm also glad you pointing out any issues concerning the kit.

One thing I should point out to you is that intermediate blue was not used on early PBY's. In particular, the aircraft you are building. Early PBY's, as well as most early pacific naval aircraft, were painted in blue-gray topside and light gray undersides. Navy blue-gray is similar to intermediate blue but not exactly. Model Master makes a blue-gray paint that is a good match. I just wanted to pass that info on to you in case you were concerned with accuracy in your paint scheme. Of course, it is entirely up to you to how you paint it.

I hope that helps out and I'm fully tuned in to watch you build up this magnificent aircraft.

Cheers, Joe

That is so cool that you're honoring your father with all those PBY builds!  I had no idea about the Model Master paints.  I have never used Vallejo Air hence my curiosity in awaiting this order.  But thank you so much for the info.  Thats something I can apply in my next build.

Nothing wrong with going off topic to share that info. That's very interesting and neat to know.

I share Brad's observation on using itermediate blue as a base color. You certainly can weather in manner that will reflect a realistic aircraft. I certainly in no way did I want you to delay your build by suddenly switching colors and paints. You're all good.
