Completed Monogram 1:48 PBY-5 Catalina
Posted by Toshi on Tuesday, March 15, 2016 7:30 PM

To my fellow forum members,

Today I look to the past with nostalgia.  A week ago, I had a bid via eBay on a old school kit.  Monogram's PBY-5 Catalina.  I was just messing around with the bid to see how many bidders were really interested in this kit.  Apparently, the indivuduals bidding was not aggressive enough as I won this model.

Ultimately, I'm very happy that I have this kit in my hands.  I was originally going to start on a Kitty Hawk "Bronco" but I'm way too excited about the Catalina.  I dont know why.  But I am.  LOL!

This will be kit number 41 for me, I so look forward to this project.  So far I've washed everything in soapy warm water as the PBY model kit is 20+ years old.  Who knows what it's been through.  Luckily for me, the original outside plastic wrap was still covering the Catalina box.  Here I go on another build!

Toshi

As you can see, the decals have yellowed.  I hope I can use them as I want to build the December 7, 1941, VP-14, NAS Kaneohe Bay, Hawaii.  Kaneohe is approximately a 40 minute drive from where Mrs. Toshi and I grew up.

This thing is HUGE!

P.S.  As I prepare this new thread of an old school kit, the theme song from the original 1970's show, Hawaii 5-0 plays through my head.  LOL!

A coincidence, as I was just looking at the PBY-5A kit in my closet today, checking for the types of propellers used.  It's a huge kit, and you have your work cut out for you (as with the B-24).

Strangely, the "Magnum P.I." theme seems to be running through my mind!

Good luck!

Toshi,

I'm delighted that you've chosen the PBY as your next project. It's one of my favorite aircraft and I don't know why I don't have it in my stash. I'll definitely be paying attention to this build.

I've read that some parts of this old kit are not very accurate but, heck, it looks like a PBY to me Big Smile

Go for it Toshi!

P.S. Here are some shots from my recent trip to Death Valley - since you asked. One shot of Ubehebe Crater, one of high winds on the Mesquite Sand Dunes, the rest from my hike across the pan to Monarch Canyon and into the canyon. Lots of wildflowers still in bloom.

If you park the decals under a full spectrum desk lamp, the yellowing will go away in a little while.

You should get one.  They're on eBay for very reasonable prices, especially for a kit this size and taken into consideration how old it is.

You should be a proffesional photographer.  These photos are stunning!  I love them all.  It seems you had a great time out there.  Thank you for sharing your trip to Death Valley.

OH BOY Toshi !

This is my #1 favorite aircraft.   I have started this very same kit and I'm anxious to see how yours comes out. Mine is still on the shelf waiting for me to re-do all the rivets that got sanded away when seam filling.  I found that job very  tedious for me and hard to get motivated to do it.

OMG!  I couldn't believe what I was reading on your Magnum PI blog.  That is just amazing.  You truly are the man!  How long did you live in Honolulu?  Mrs. Toshi grew up in the rough neighbor hood in Kalihi.  I grew up in McCully, right next to Lunalilo Elementary.

Thank you GAF for sharing that with me as well as the forum members of FSM.  And yes, I'm absolutely inspired by your build.  That bridge is a work of art!  I'm stunned!

Are there any plans for that bridge?

We have a 0-Gauge Layout and wanted to add a couple of bridges.

The River Kwai Bridge would be a great addition plus Joey couple feature it in a Science Fair!!!

I always thought that that was a great looking airplane. Are you going to build it in a simulated water base? That would be WILD!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The bridge was made by GAF, for a episode on Magnum PI.  I doubt that it's available, you will need to contact GAF about any information regarding a bridge.  Thanks for the visit.

That would be WILD!  My skills are not cut out for such a job as you described.  Also the kit is so big, I wouldn't attempt a diorama for the PBY.  Just the base alone would be of a huge magnitude.  LOL!

WHOA!  Hold on!

I didn't build either the bridge for the show or the student built one.  I was merely pointing out that "Magnum P.I." is the only show that I remember that anyone built a model.  Since we mentioned the show, I thought it might be interesting to see it.

The blog by the actual model-maker is very interesting, although model makers are becoming a rare breed in TV and films due to CGI now.

Sorry for the misunderstanding!  Smile

Here is the start of the Catalina build.  I thought I should at the very least get the partial build of the cockpit done.  There's actually more pieces to glue and paint to complete the cockpit.  Until then, please review the photos below, and thank you all for the read and replies!

I was at the Erickson Collection today, and took some more pics of their "Cat".  The gal that was manning the counter said that was her favorite of them all.  Theirs is grey/white and yellow with the circle in the stars, either pre-war or early war.  Got a bunch of pics from before and added some today.  I'll send them on when I get home this w/e, but you will probably be done by then......Big Smile

Wow, you got it at a steal!  I've found several sellers via eBay that have PBY decals.  Be careful, read it carefully.  Some decals are for foreign countries.  Some examples were Taiwan, UK, etc.  Good luck and I'd love to see your post of Catalina build.  Thanks for the visit.
