1/24 JU-87b - COMPLETED
Posted by Theuns on Wednesday, May 25, 2016 7:23 AM

While I am busy with the 1/32 Tam P-51 I decided to tackle my 1/24 Heller/Airfix JU-87b.

It is an OK kit for it's age, the cockpit detail is not enough though and I will add seatbelts from lead foil and some electrical wire looms to the variuos controll boxes.

It seems the early 87's were RLM 02 interior.

Here is the IP sofar.

What a beast of a kit this was/ is! I remember seeing one of these kits at the LHS in Farmers Branch, Tx (back then it was Phil's Hobbies and now it's Bobe's Hobbies in Pensacola, Florida). Man that box was huge!! Looking forward to more updates.

Good looking IP BTW.

Looking awesome! Yes RLM 02 is correct ,they used it on interiors until 42 then went to RLM66 but still used 02 in the wheel bays after 42

Got the cockpit done, then started the engine but found the fit to be poor, I will have to fill the gaps with thick super glue.

Someone told me that the cockpit floor was plywood and not metal, would the RLM 02 on that then be correct still or was it varnished?

Also the Oxigen system for the crew is lacking in the kit. It is same sa on the Me 109....where would it have been mounted in the pit?

After a fight I finally got the engine to fit, the one forward radiator hose is abot 2mm to short and I will have to fill this in.

The kit is also lacking all the fuel, electrica and controll links to the engine from the firewall so these will have to be made and installed but I will do that after painting is complete.

The fuselage fit on the bottom is poor and loads of filling/sanding will be needed, this is one BIG model!

I was not happy with the drilling of the rivets, it was to heavy so I put a cone shaped grinding bit into my dremmel to make new reccessed rivets and the results are allot more subtle.
I will do the rest of the airframe the same way.

There is a substantial gp under the bottom of the wingroot fairing that will need filling, tht top seam is OK.

Looking good so far.

Ty for the WIP , it's very interesting how you do the various "fixes" and additions and I'm watching with great interest and taking notes.

Excuse the 'me too' post, but those seatbelts caught my eye, too. They look extremely realistic. That's the way I wish I could make my PE belts look.

And that's not to downplay the rest of your detail work so far, which is excellent.

Boy, I'm excited to see this epic undertaking Theuns. Your doing a remarkable job on it so far, that's for sure. The cockpit is very nicely done as well as the engine so far. This is going to be a fun one.

Kudos for posting that excellent guide to how you scratch your seatbelts! Bow Down

Great step by step, great results, and add me to the list of guys who wants every one of those twisty ties I've ever tossed out back!!!

Odd thing is, every time I discard one, I stand there and look at it for a bit. My significant other has actually caught me doing this and asked "you're not going to save THAT, are you????" She's in for a surprise, isn't she?

Theuns

I dusted off this model and it has grown into a huge thing! By the size of the paving you can see the size

The fit of the outer wings to the inner was not good so I had to fill the gaps with sprue and glue. I hope it will not crack under the wings weight over time.

I wanted to go mad with the detail on this model, then I decided that it will take ages and I will maybe not even finish it so I will complete it as is.

Theuns

Whatever you choose as far as your build goes, everything looks fantastic!  I love the direction this is going in.  Don't underestimate yourself, the detailing is superb "As is"!  Your technique is what pushes this build progressively.  Great job!
