F8K Crusader WIP 1/48 scale
Posted by Redstang on Sunday, June 26, 2016 5:38 PM

Hello all.  Gonna be my first wip here.  Hopefully Ill update it consistantly.  It's kind of a pain posting pictures.  I'm trying to get this done in time for IPMS Texas in Austin in September.  Join me on this adventure while I try.  This is one of my favorite planes so lets go.

Here is a list of aftermarket parts and things to do.  Convert from a J to a K.  This intails removing a hump on the back and reshaping the nose.  I have resin pieces for the wheel bays one piece air intake, resin cockpit, resin engine and rear intakes and aftermarket decals.

The kit.  There are no kits of early F8's and I couldnt get my hands on a conversion kit

Got to remove the interior detil first.  Before

After

One piece intake

Cut out

Both the one pice intake and the resin cockpit had to sanded down to fit.  Was ery careful not to sand through each other.  I knew there was enough room because I did one in the past where I also had open gun bays.  Now that one was tight!

Your F-8 with all that AM looks to be quite epic. You certainly have my attention. You've done some right nice work so far getting all that resin in. Looks sharp.

To continue reshaping the front jthe forward canopy glass has to be installed and worked to fit since the fuselage is now thinner. This means now the cockpit has to be completed first.

So the cockpit I'm using is for an f8e. The k is an upgraded c to e standards. I couldn't find any reference pics of a inversions cockpit so I figured this be the closest. I accidentally knocked the rails off with my thumb when fitting the cockpit so I had to scratch build some new ones.

I then painted the cockpit with a custom paint mixture. In all my reference pics the cockpits are more blue grey than just grey. The paint is mainly tamiya rlm grey with 2 drops of sea blue and white till I got the shade I wanted.

Great job so far on the F-8 and the WIP.  I'm enjoying the excellent  pics and the informative step-by-step is one of the better ones out there. TY for posting

So did you simply sand the nose down to reshape it? Is there enough meat there to do that or did reinforce it? Tim

Thanks. I started out thinking there would be enough plastic but there wasn't enough. I ended up filling it with milliputty.

Excellent work so far. Really impressive workmanship to get everything correct.  Especially like your attention to detail.

Looking really good and I appreciate the attention to detail.  What is your source for the information about the K?

the squadron walk around and in action books. Also reference pics and what ever I find online. There's not much information of the K but I have a few good pics of the one I'm building this based on.

Awesome work. Ive always loved this kit. your cockpit work looks very realistic. Great job with the nose and windshield putty work. That's my least favorite part of any conversion or mod. work

Red that is some really great work you got going on there. Your attention to detail is incredible.

I watched the Movie "13 Days" about the Cuban missle Crisis. Was that an F8 that did the first low level pass on Cuba?

Well, had my first major screw up.  Due to financial reasons I purchased a f8j kit which is the later version.  It was on sale.  Didnt think anything of it until now.  The forward wing flaps on the j are 2 piece rather than a single piece.  If I had bought the e kit I wouldnt have this problem.  So the solution was either purchase a second kit (they go for $60) or fix them myself.  I chose to fix them myself.

Here I am holding the flaps to an old e model I built years ago to see the problem.

Coming together and scribing the panel lines which the 2 piece ones did not have

This ones about done

Here they are on the wing.  I think they came out rather well.

I should be in early paint soon.  As long as the call of video games is not too strong.

Nothing too exciting, but paint!!!  Model needs to be finished in 2 weeks so updates will hopefully come sooner.

I'm actually passed the decal stage but dont have the time to post the pics right now.  I will update again in a few days!
