Thanks Toshi. I used Tamiya colors, straight from the spray can. I have an airbrush but never use it. The weathering was done mainly with oils. Typically I weather my sci-fi  builds with pastels. The only pastel powder I used on this were for the smoke stains from the machine guns. This was only my second time working with oils.

That is one fantastic looking Wildcat build.  The colors are amazing and I so love the way you've weathered the F4F!  Yes, please build more aircraft!  Thank you for sharing such a great build.

Thanks a lot guys. Yes, a lot of the weathering techniques carry over. And yep, I used a silver Prizma color pencil for the chipping.

You know I was think of what planes were used in CE3K in the opeing sequence! I could replicate one of those Wildcats!

I'll probably do more aircraft. It was a fun and enjoyable week long build.

Great job!! There’s not much difference between SF subjects and others. It's all subject to the same universal elements.

See what I did that there? Adding the word Universe??

Now that's some sharp work, as much as I like your SF subjects you should build more aircraft! Love the chipped paint on the leading edges and around the cockpit, did you use a silver pencil? I can't get mine to look anywhere near that natural.

And btw you could always do one of the Grumman Avengers that vanished into the Bermuda Triangle. Since they appeared in 'Close Encounters of the Third Kind' they'd be a SF subject too!

Tamiya 1/48 Wildcat- My first WWII aircraft
Posted by robiwon on Friday, August 12, 2016 9:10 AM

So first off, I'm mainly a sci-fi builder. This is my first WWII aircraft...ever. After spending two years working on a 3 foot Battlestar Galactica and other assorted sci-fi subjects I decided I needed a break. I picked this kit up at our local club meet a few weeks ago for $5. It's built OOB with the kit decals. Some colors may be off as I don't stock a lot of "military" type colors. I did have on hand the correct Tamiya AS-20 for the underside. It's a very popular sci-fi color right now. I also drilled out the machine guns, they were just little nubs. I replaced them with appropriate sized aluminum tube. I'm no aircraft expert by any means. I've built a few modern jets of the years but that's it.

I'm pretty pleased with how it turned out and may look into doing a few more aircraft kits. I might even dabble in the aftermarket stuff as well. I'm going to do a small diorama base for it as well, just need the right size plaque.

Let me know what you think.
