Revell P-51D finished with invasion stripes 1/48
Posted by Dutch-modeler on Sunday, September 16, 2018 5:48 PM

This is my first aircraft model ever and it is the first time I used an airbrush. I’m really surprised how great it all worked out!!!

I made my own version with invasion stripes and a mix of different decals. There was no plane named Big Beautiful doll with invasion stripes and this number combination.

Here are a few pictures of the build and the finished model at the end.

 1

1. I first painted the interior parts in chromate yellow which was a mix of Revell enamel paint “yellow 15 (70%)” and “zinc chromate 361 SM(30%)”

 2

2. Then I painted the interior and details with mate black

 3

3. Sadly no decall for the instrument panel... :(

 4

4. put everything together.

 5

5. Painted the gunbay

 6

6. Removed all the seaming lines. I also used a really cheap primer which I really regret, it came off when masking certain areas...

 7

7. Painted the model with gloss black.

 8

8. Then I used AK interactive Xtreme metal polished aluminium 481.

I don’t know if it was the primer that I used or the AK interactive paint but one of them was horrible...

their videos on YouTube are a bit of a scam because they claim to be resistent to Terpentine and al sort of masking tape... that is defenitly not true!!!

and their polished aluminium doesn’t have the shine they claim to have.

but on the other side I’m happy with the end result and it may be my fault... I don’t know

easy to apply but don’t get your airbrush to close to the model, when you put to much paint on the same spot you‘ll mess up your model.

 9

9. added the invasion stripes. Before I could use any type of masking tape I had to put it on my hands 3 times, removing most of the adhesive material so it wouldn’t pull off the paint.

  10

10. Invasion stripes done. now it was time to apply my decals. I bought lifelike decals on ebay because the original Revell decals fall apart when I put them in the water...

after all I’m really happy with the lifelike decalls. They add a lot of extra detail to the model

After all I really enjoyed building my first aircraft model and I will be building many more after this one.

I still have a spitfire (1/72), p-47N (1/48), B-17G(1/48) and a F4U corsair (1/72) waiting to be build.

so many more finished model uploads coming.

Building models is one thing I like but uploading and sharing my work here is also really great!

Sorry for my bad English or bad grammar. But I have to say that uploading my work here is better for my english then what they teach me in school... ;)

I really like all to hear any advice from you guys or experience you had with this model.

Very nice build on a very challenging kit-you've done well. Looking forward to seeing more of your work,

For your first aircraft, Toast. You took care of all the usual problems very nicely. The only thing missing is practice. Your building and painting will get better and better as you get more builds under your belt.

Very well done,

I agree, the You Tube reviews on AK metals were quite misleading.  I wasn't particularly impressed and found them to be fragile.  I'll be sticking with Alclad.

Dutch... For your first model it looks great! I can't wait to see what the future holds for you. Maybe a couple of suggestions: First, I'd suggest some Tamiya white putty and some ultra high grit sand paper. Something like 1,200 to 1,600 grit. It has a way of blending in seams and panels, like the radiator scoop and body and the gun access panel. I'm starting on the third or forth kit of this model, and there are just seems that you have to blend in. You did a great job without it, actually... Secondly, you might think about looking into acrylic paints at this point. I get what you were going for with a lacquer finish. They look great. I've been doing this about four years now, and I'm at the point where I might begin thinking about just thinking about trying lacquer. Again, the look wonderful if done they great, but from what I've heard, they can be a nightmare to work with and they every little imperfection is magnified. Acrylics on the other hand are far more forgiving. If you make a mistake, just take a paper towel with some rubbing alcohol on it, whip it off, let it dry for a minute and keep going. You can also use 90% rubbing alcohol as a thinner (generally in a 50/50 mix) and I use it to clean my air brushes. Not to say Tamiya, and others, don't make great thinners on their own... It's a matter of preference... and a lot of people use enamel... I've just heard that clean up and ease of use acrylics were better... Just something for you to research, and experiment with. Just have fun with it You have the talent for it! Now, practice makes perfect. I can tell you, there are a bunch of people on here, that are far more talented than I am, that are willing give you advise if you need it. Thanks for sharing first model with us! Raymond

Raymond, Thanks for the reply and maybe I‘ll try Alclads for my next model but for now I’ll keep using enamels since I got quite an inventory of enamel paints which I can use for my other models instead of buying every acrylic color new. But I really agree on buying some sandig paper/tools and Tamiya putty to remove the seaming lines and Tamiya panel liner to give it a better Finish because the polished aluminium looks a bit cheap without any kind of weathering.

yeah I noticed it myself when Building this model, for example: When I started, I covered the entire model in masking tape because I didn’t want to spray paint all over the whole model, later on with more practice I learned to use my airbrush to spray really preciese areas. And then I realised how great airbrushes really are.

Well my first model was a Revell corvette C1 1/24. All I used was brushes where I didn’t even thin my paints...

I uploaded a topic on this model as well. I got this model from someone else and I liked modeling so much I went on after the holiday and even bought an aircompressor with an airbrush for €100. But I got 2 coupons of €50 each.

I also really like WWII aircrafts so that’s why I started on aircrafts...

Well done. Those invasion stripes can be a pain but you handled them like a pro.  Thanks for sharing
