Tamiya 1/32 Scale McDonnell F-4C Phantom - Col. Robin Olds - Finished
Posted by Ole on Sunday, January 27, 2019 9:42 AM

I think I'm all caught up now with posting completed models. I've had this kit in the stash for a while and finally finished it late last year. It's built completely box stock except for Quickboost resin seats. Finished with Gunze paints and some light weathering.

Love the Rhino, as a former Marine instructor once said" It's a mans aircraft".

Yours looks great Ole, I particularly like the weathering behind the exhaust, very well done.

Very nice model. That finish is great. Not too overdone.

That is one great looking Phantom. To say that the camo came out great would be an understatement, but like 'Armornut' mentioned the weathering aft of the afterburners and the job you did on the underbelly really puts this one over the top. Also ALL the decals look great.

Absolutely superb! The colors laid down so smooth. That paint is sweet under magnification. Well done ordnance for sure - you’ve got her loaded for bear.

In the pattern: Scale Shipyard's 1/48 Balao Class Sub! leaning out the list...NOT! Ha, added to it again - Viper MkVii, 1/32 THUD & F-15J plus a weekend madness build!

Beautiful job Yes

Steve

Building a kit from your stash is like cutting a head off a Hydra, two more take it's place.

That’s an awesome Phantom, Ole! Have always been partial towards Phantoms in this camo scheme. You really did a great job on this.

Was the kit supplied seats not so good that you swapped them with resin seats? Asking as I am sort of interested in getting this Tamiya Phantom.

I’m really loving your work YesYes

Phantastic bent tail.

Have the C/D kit doing as Ritche's ride at Udorn.  Actually worked on that one when I was there in '73.

Thanks again all!

The original seats did not include seatbelts, and in this scale, especially with the open canopies, it would stand out too much. I think the resin option was better than PE seat belts. I used PE last time I built this one, but that was full cockpit details.

OUTSTANDING JOB. A fine tribute to Col. Olds. FOR ANYONE INTERESTED THERE IS AN F-4 IN PRIVATE hands doing the air show circuit done in that paint scheme. IIRC the actual aircraft is in the USAF Museum in Dayton OH. Col. Olds' daughter was an USAF Acadamy graduate and was in the Middle East when a SCUD missle hit the HQ building she was in and she was killed. Thats family sacrifice for the country. Then there is the 5 Sullivan brothers. Again, a fine tribute to Col. Olds.

There was an episode on AHC on the MIG trap flight and mission.  Worth watching when it shows up again.

Didn't realize she had been killed in action.  She had comments on her Dad's history and that flight at the end of it.

I'll add a couple of facts if I may. Robin Olds retired from the USAF at the rank of Brigadier General and he was a TRIPLE ACE. Ditto on the documentary on how he tricked the North Vietnamese to come up and fight and get shot down. Its a great story.

Thanks, this was my third time building one of the Tamiya F-4 variants. Gradually getting better each time too. It was a great kit, and there will be a fourth too.
