Tamiya 1/48 G4M1 Betty
Posted by jeaton01 on Saturday, January 11, 2020 11:13 AM

This one was just finished for the Japanese GB IX, a long running series of GB's hosted by Gamera.  Lots of nice builds going on there.

It is one of the Bettys that were part of the attack on the Prince of Wales and Repulse, December 10, 1941.

The last pictures are of contemporaries of the time.  The Zero was flown by Saburo Sakai, and although he was probably flying a different Zero at the time it would have been an A6M2, and was in the Java Sea battles.  The B-26 was a Midway participant.

Wow, great job! I would be proud to have that shining star in my collection. Great job rigging the antennas too. Did you use Uschi van der Rotsen thread? It looks very fine. I would love to build a Betty sometime.

That's a beauty John.  Really well done and a beautiful airplane.

Thanks,

John

Thanks everyone, it was a fun build, just a great kit.  I did use the Uschi thread, the superfine and it was very hard to see,  I finally put masking tape on each end so I could find the ends.  I'm sure it is near scale thickness because it's almost impossible to see!  I don't know if I could rig a 1/72 biplane with it, it certainly can't be pushed through a hole.

Nice work! Picked up this kit a few months ago, but have been wrapped up in a few other builds right now. Was going to start the Betty before I started the Tornado I'm currently working on, but decided I wanted to grab some extras for it before I get started. This has me itching to get it out though!

Thanks, everyone, I appreciate the nice comments, this hobby is so much more fun when it is shared with other friends.

For those that are going to build a Tamiya Betty, I will have paper camouflage paint mask patterns and patterns for a few of the window masks that I thought Eduard did not do well enough on my build log for the Betty.  Here is the link, though it will be a few days before I have it all written up:

Excellent work, John. It's nice to see a Japanese plane from the beginning of the war that hasn't been weathered to death!

I've come to really appreciate your group shots, it's always neat to see how planes stack up with other similar birds, or in this case peers from the same timeframe.

Thanks for sharing!

Nice work John. Thanks for sharing over here. I need to get back into group builds again.

Crown, it is sitting next to a B-25 and a B-26 in the display case and yes, it's quite a bit bigger.

Thanks, everyone.
