Knox, I'm with you on cleaning the airbrush. I thought that brush painting might be a timg saver in this case. But in all honesty with the second paint coats needed, there was no time saving involved. But it was enjoyable to go back and give brushing a go like I used to do. The Mrs. and I were happy to just have this done for the little guy. I suppose there may be a brownie point or two in there somewhere.

Andrew, I agree that WWII Red Air Force subjects are overlooked here in the west. I do know that they had the highest scoring Allied aces, and that their exploits do still live on in that part of the world. We just have to broaden our horizons. The Zvezda kit just arrived in the mail, and I gotta say, it's a night and day difference between this one and the Zvezda La-5FN. 

GM, I do have a lot on my plate for the next bit, but perhaps I can find something like this for the Weekend Madness GB. It's been awhile since I've taken part in one of those.

I’m impressed.  Your nephew is going to love it.  I know brush painting can take a lot of time , but often for me, the thought of cleaning the airbrush is the kicker, even though I don’t save much time. You are a good great Uncle, and maybe got some brownie points with with the Mrs?  

Thank you Mike. It was enjoyable to build in this manner. Although in hindsight I probably could have airbrushed this in the same time frame.

That was certainly fast. Took me about the same amount of time to slap the old Monogram Bf-109E kit together, and I used my airbrush lol.

It looks perfect for flight in the sky of imagination!

Super nice work! I haven't brush-painted anything but figures in years. BSYamato used to brush-paint his 1/72nd aircraft and they looked great- he even pre-shaded them with a brush.

Andrew, I hadn't brush painted an airplane in over thirty years, so this was a definite refresher course on that lost skill. It takes more time to apply the paint, but there is far less cleaning afterwards, so time wise they balance out somewhat. But as much as I do like 109s, I have a soft spot for these Russian fighters.

Chad, I did indeed brush paint the whole thing. Up close you can tell from the texture of the paint. I feel ya about the cleaning of the airbrush taking the wind out of your sails. I get that too.

So here it is, all finished in a bit over 80 hours. Hobbycraft’s 1/48 La-5FN built OOB. I did modify a few parts with files or filler here and there, but nothing beyond that. I also used the kit decals, which surprisingly worked very well. 

Now it’s all packaged up for travel to my great nephew and delivery to him over the weekend

Is the entire plane brush painted or just the base coat?  Very smooth finish if brush painted. I miss the days of picking up a brush and going to town. Nowadays my *** gets deflated thinking about using and cleaning the AB. 

Ya know, this would be an ideal kit for the weekend GB. Too bad that this project didn't fall during the timeframe of that GB.  And yes, it is a sharp looking fighter!

Of course a Hobbycraft I-16 might work too...

Edit:  I’ve condensed my stash to only planes I want to build. (Very limited variety, but lots of each one). Now I feel the need to add one of these.  It really is an attractive plane.

Decals are now on. So many to apply… all 10 of them… lol! 6 Red stars, 2 Bort numbers, and the “boosted” stencils on the cowling. Amazingly the Hobbycraft decals worked very well!

Just gotta add the final bits, do a sealing top coat, and this will be all finished…

He is going to be one happy lad! The memories this generates for him and you both are the kind that can't be replaced.

LD, how can you say no to a little kid in your family who asks you to build him an airplane? Aside from getting me out of my modeling doldrums and building again, it's a great way to make room in my stash for the better Zvezda La-5FN kit...
