Hasegawa 1/48 A6M5 Zero
Posted by stikpusher on Saturday, January 1, 2022 5:07 PM

So here is my last completion of 2021, Hasegawa’s 1982 vintage A6M5 Zero. I bought and started it in 2016, barely, then sidelined it for unknown reasons. I restarted it a bit over a month ago and wrapped it up on the 30th. I added a PE harness in the cockpit, and used some Aeromaster Hinomarus for the green outline types that the actual aircraft wore when it was captured on Saipan. I figured it must have had a decent pilot to survive the Marianas Turkey Shoot, as it was captured intact and in flying condition on Saipan after that battle. It was brought back to the US for evaluation. Today it is the only flying Zero still equipped with the original Sakae engine. All others still flying today have had their engines replaced by other types that fit the airframe. Decals aside from the Hinomarus are from the kit, and the paint colors are Tamiya.

It’s nice to finish another old shelf queen. Thanks for looking, comments and critiques are welcome.

Excellent work Stik.

I can definitely agree with that. It's also cool to finish something that gets started and put away. I've got a couple like that staring me in the face. Beautiful finish up Carlos.

That last picture just blows me away at just how much bigger the Hellcat was than the Zero. Good outcome on the Hellcat as well.

Thanks guys!

Tony, it is indeed a good old kit. Not overwhelming in parts count and such. An excellent choice for a "simple" build.

Joe, the size difference between the two types shows the difference in USN and IJN fighter design philosophy. Brute power and strength vs. finesse. And oh yes, it feels real good to clean up more shelf queens. Slow but sure I go...

Great build Stik!  Interesting size comparison between the Zero and Hellcat.

Really neat build. And again, a nice comparison.

I bought and built that kit way back when it came out and now I can't find it.

Hmmmmm...:-to

Nice build, Stik, and congratulations on reviving a "Shelf of Doom" build!  I like your improvements, they round out the details nicely.

Another beauty Stik.  Interesting story as well.  I really like the flight deck pic with the figures.

Thanks,

John

That's a great-looking build! Been away from the forum for a while due to illness. Good to be back.
