1/32 HK Do 335 A-0 Arrow Werk #240102 (Finished)
Posted by lawdog114 on Monday, August 1, 2022 11:54 PM

Hello, did you miss me? (Shirley I jest). Anyways, I took a break from the forum(s) as my time is quite limited nowadays for various reasons.  Well, I'm still building as always.  I figured I'd share my latest endeavor, the biggie 1/32 Do 335 Arrow A-0, dubbed the "Aardvark".  The Arrow was the one of the fastest pistoned engined fighter of the war and could have caused some problems for the allies if it saw combat.  It allegedly never saw combat, however, I read there was a report that a Typhoon pilot tried to engage one in combat, but was unsuccessful due to it's incredible speed.  This encounter was reportedly never confirmed. I also read these weren't very manueverable due to the push/pull prop technology.  So who knows how effective they would have been.  The A-0 was the fighter/bomber version.

The kit was quite good in detail, but quite tricky fit-wise due to all the open panels.  The wings fit great. The engines were very nicely detailed, so I chose to open the port engine panels and close the starboard.  Paint was out of the AK Interactive Real Colors line.  I did brown up the RLM 82 a bit as it seemed too lime green to me.  I've been experimenting with Uschi Spatter templates which basically make the basing technique easy.  I'm getting the hang of them and love the tonal variation they offer.  No more in-close marbling with the airbrush. Additions were resin wheels and PE seatbelts.  I wanted to simulate the one that was rumored to have seen combat, so I chipped it up slightly.  This was done with the hairspray and liquid frisket technique.

I'm currenly finishing a well beaten Pacific P-47 with these same techniques that I will post as well.

A few in-progress pictures.

Actually yes, you were missed.  I hadn't seen any builds from you for awhile.  I was afraid we had lost another modeller! (Of course, you had posted in the last month, so no worries about your health  Smile)

Now about the DO-335, it's an example of your usual superlative work.  I think any defects may be down to the kit, and not your skill.  I can say that 1/32nd aircraft are either well-done in manufacturing, or not so good.

The DO-335 is one of those aircraft that benefited from never going into production and revealing its flaws!  Big Smile

I was just wondering about you.  Beautiful job on the Arrow.  I did the two seater version way back when I was a kid.  Pretty unique aircraft.

Thanks,

John

Nice "Anteater" Lawdog!  Looking at the great chipping in the wheel wells, it reminded me of a comment that Eric "Winkle" Brown made when test flying the Do-335.  He noted that the nosewheel made a firm thump under his seat when it retracted.

The Do-335 was probably not terribly maneuverable due to its massive size. At around 45 feet both ways, it approached the dimensions of a medium bomber.  The rudder and elevator were supposedly heavy while the power assisted ailerons were light.  As ohers mentioned, the plane was still going through its teething phase, so a lot of bugs remained to be addressed.

That's the nicest DO-335 I've seen. A real beauty, Joe.

And yes, I missed you too. As mentioned above, was afraid we had lost you.

I think I'll take my coffee, go downstairs and throw rocks at my current model now. Bow Down

Thanks John.  Indeed, I see why they called it the Aardvark.  Reminds me more of a shark though.

Thanks G.  Regarding the gear bays, that's the liquid frisket technique and I'm pleased with the effect.  Realistic or not, it draws the eye into that area.  I forgot to do that in the nose gear...doh!

Thanks for the technical info.  It has just over a 17 inch wingspan in this scale, so it was a challenge to ship.  I recall reading the B-25 was Actuallt quite maneuverable with the right pilot.

Cheecky Bugger! I had real concerns like others that something very, very bad may have happened. I'm truly glad that you're are OK, and havent lost your sense of humor!

As it happens, I got bitten by a Red Back Spider on the weekend, the cousin being the Black Widow. Wont eat you, but hurts a treat.

Take care.
