Oh man! These are bad a$$ looking aircraft anyways and you managed to turn out a VERY well detailed out and painted/ weathered 88. Just beautiful!! WOW!

I've got an ICM He-111 and am most impressed by what's in the box. After seeing this turn out, I can't wait to start on it.

No criticisms from me.  Your Ju88 is a work of art.  Very clean for a warbird with just enough subtle weathering to make it look used.  And a unique camouflage job for a Luftwaffe bird.

Killer work Hoss.  I have their A-5 in the stash waitng for the right time and subject.  Nice to know it's a pleasurable build.  Now if ICM could give us an A-1...................

Thanks LD! I think you'll like the kit -- it's not a shake and bake Tamiya and needs some panel lines added -- but it doesn't have any fit issues and sure looks the part. It's a great subject for your superb weathering techniques. Thanks again.

Nice job.  It's super cool.  I have the same question as Tom.  Achieving the camo pattern. You mentioned chipping with pencils.  This is a technique I like to develop.  I feel like you can have a bit more control with pencils and also easier to chip with a range of colors.
I really liked your 1/32 Corsair.  The subject and the colors make this one a little more interesting.
Once again it's awesome.  Well done for sure.

Paul

Many thanks Paul. Much appreciated. I usually use Prismacolor pencils but just bought a set of AK weathering pencils, which have a range of colors more suited to weathering. Just started using them and I like them so far. Thanks again.

Now!

See what I've been saying? Subtle with the lines and WOW. plus the unusual Camo Pattern sets this unusual bird apart from it's brethren. Well Done!!

Thanks Tanker-Builder!

That's a fabulous job you've done there, and a very unusual scheme. I love the Malta stuff myself, partly because of the number of unique finishes and the oddball aircraft.

Thanks Chris. Much appreciated. I agree with you on the Malta subjects -- I've just started to dig into the 1942 Spitfires. Thanks again.

Now that is a very nice build. The extra modeling you applied to fix some of the models shortcommings along with the unique camouflage and very clean build really makes this stand out, great work!

Excellent work!  Very unique camo scheme.  How did you achieve that tight/hard edged camo scheme?(Your masking agent)

Thanks Tom. Much appreciated. I used Tamiya tape in contact for the RLM 65/70/71, and blue tack rolls, 1-2mm thick, for the RLM 78 and 79. Thanks again.

Beautiful job.  I've not seen that camo scheme ever.  Looks fantastic.

Thanks John. Much appreciated. I really had to dig to find the scheme. Tracked it down in a Kagero book. The AIMS decal sheet only shows the starboard side, which is all that's shown in the one photo of the plane. I used a little creative license. Thanks again.

1/48 ICM Ju 88A-4, Stab. II/KG 77, Heinrich Paepcke, Sicily, October 1942 (Complete)
Posted by Hoss WA on Saturday, November 12, 2022 6:38 PM

This is the first of a series of projects related to the Siege of Malta in 1942. The subject is Heinrich Paepcke's Ju 88A-4, which sports a unique camo scheme of sand and light blue over the standard 65/70/71 splinter pattern.  Hauptmann Paepcke lost his life when his Ju 88 collided with a Spitfire over Malta on October 17, 1942.

I used the ICM kit along with the Eduard interior and exterior upgrade kits, Eduard wheels and decals from AIMS. The single photo I was able to find of the plane suggested that Paepcke's Ju-88 was in pretty good shape, so only light weathering was applied.

As for the ICM kit, the fit was excellent, with no major issues. However, there were quite a few missing panel lines and sink marks that needed to be addressed.

The Eduard detail kits and wheel upgrade were nice for the cockpit, engine and landing gear.

The surface detail is fairly sparse so I decided to use the rivet wheel and add rivets to all external surfaces. The effect is subtle but I think it turned out OK.

My main challenge with this kit was the canopy. It was molded very poorly -- there was a major distortion problem on across the top and sides and the framing sections are shaped thick and wide with poor definition. Not crisp. It took quite a bit of sanding, polishing, and extra paint work to get them to an acceptable level. If I had to do it again, I'd probably sand the canopy smooth and use decal strips for the framing.

I used Mr. Color lacquer paints for all the main camo. I used RLM 78 and 79 for the blue and sand on the upper surfaces.

The decals were printed by Cartograf and went down very nicely.

Weathering was kept light, using Tamiya black/brown mix on selected panel lines and colored pencils for chips and scratches. I also applied a typical Ju 88 exhaust staining pattern.

Overall, I'm pleased with how it turned out, but it was a little more work than I expected. Thanks for looking. Comments and critiques are more than welcome.
