TBF Atlantic Avenger finished...
Posted by Wulf on Monday, June 9, 2008 8:46 PM

This is the AM 1:48 sub hunter kit. I did the port side cutaway for some interior detailing to be seen. Used the Eduard super PE set and lots 'o scratchbuilding. The figure is from Verlinden. I found the picture below and thought it was a great shot of #21. So, I tried to represent this plane (prior to the mishap in this photo) instead of the kits #17, which is in the background. I enjoyed trying to reproduce the weathering and fading that's apparent on the plane. It did take time and a few coats to get it close. Most of the fading was airbrushed with a little boost from pastels. I used a very light gray wash so it wouldn't be too overpowering. All comments and crit welcomed...

Fantastic job Wulf! That Am Avenger is going to be my next build and I am excited about it because I know it builds into a great looking plane. I just hope mine could look as good as yours.Big Smile [:D]

Wulf,  Outstanding work.  The cut away is such a great idea too.  It's such a great kit with all that detail and then you just close it up, never to be seen again.  You really did this Turkey justice!!!!!!!Bow [bow]

The gray-over-white Atlantic scheme is underdone as far as I'm concerned. Yours looks great! Lots of neat details to see through the cutaway.

I can tell you used the photo as a guide for your weathering, and that turned out to be a good idea, in my opinion. Your weathering came out just a tad understated, exactly how I like it.Big Smile [:D]  Beautiful work!

Andy,

Great job!  I am curious to know how you did the cut away, and how you gave the exhaust pipes that worn out burnt look, as well as the exhaust fumes?  Did you have to mix any paints when airbrushing?  Sorry for all of the questions.  I am just curious so that I can perform the same great techniques.  Thanks!

Very nice, Andy! Thumbs Up [tup] So much of the detail is normally hidden upon completion of one of these, so I love the cut-out idea and the way you pulled it off.

Brad,

The cutaway was done by drilling small holes in the shape of the hole and and connecting the "dots" with an xacto. Then had to clean up the edges by sanding. The exhausts are photo etched pieces with a light spray of rust and black. The exhaust staining was a combo of thinned black paint and pastels. No paint mixing, really. The colors used were out of the bottle. Did have to use several shades of gray to get the "faded" look but the overall colors are dark gull gray over white.

Some of the finest work I've seen in here...the worn-away anti-skid paint on the wing-root is sublime...nice figgie as well...you did justice to what I consider the best injection molded a/c kit on the market. Congrats...

I used Model Master acrylics. The pastels used are the dry pastels (non oil base). I have a set of about 20 colors. You can get them at any art store. I just make a fine powder out of them and apply with a small, stubby brush.
