A perusal of, ok a raiding party but no prisoners were taken, of the usual nunneries suggests that there are no aftermarket parts for the Mariner. It has been suggested in certain rum joints that using the kit canopy for a vac mold might be the way to go, however I do not possess that technology. Clearly the clear parts are a big challenge. Well two heads are better than one, but I think that sanding the thing down to proper proportions and going "all paint" is fine. Done that many a time.

My DC-4 was a Heller DC-6 that got bigtime modified using the long OOP "Mullet Model" conversion kit, for which I had to rebuild a Camaro in Memphis. But thats another story. They say you are a redneck when you mow the lawn and find your ex-wifes car.

I've got an article archived about the ill-fated George One that flew off of the Pine Island in 1946 mapping Antarctica, before all the various treaties were signed. I modeled her once, at 1:400 and had this kit saved to do the same at 1:72 so I'm not sure if/when this GB ever happens if I'd backdate the Mariner to Rabaul/ whatever, or stick with G1.

My other option is a very nice PBY-4 Privateer that I bought off of a pool table the other night.

But I would like a dual build with you, too.

My name is Bill and I own three Mach 2 kits: the Caravelle, the Mariner and the Valiant.

darson,

I will keep my eyes open on this one to officially start as I have a few applicable kits waiting patiently in my stash.

Could be, Admiral, could be. I'll have to whip up a fresh batch of torpedo juice!

I'd benefit on this one from another modeler. Do you have the model? It's really quite horrifying. Every part is going to need a good sanding down and session in flash removal. I've never gotten into that too much, except on the occasional Frog model (no pun intended).

OK, Me too, Me Two.  I wanna do the Mach II PBM as well.  We gonna be in the same squadron, Cap'n BondoBill?

Thanks for all the responses guys, it certainly seems like there is enough interest out there for either build, but after posting this thread in Armor and Aircraft the winner was clear:

1. Invasion of Europe 13 votes
2. Pacific War 17 votes
3. Fast Movers 5 votes

So I'll be ramping up a Pacific Theatre of Operations GB in the next couple of weeks in the GB forum. I'll look forward to seeing you there as we island hop our way across the Pacific over the next year.

Cheers

PTO I am committed with the PBM which is a kit for men, not boys. The Mach 2 offering, as in not very well cast, rough in the extreme:

and here are the funny papers, Major Hoople:

But here's the thing, a 1/72 PBM in December 1946 Operation Longbow, flying off of the USS Pine Island and mapping Antarctica, or perhaps looking for secret Nazi U-Boat havens. We'll never know...

Any of these would be good but I'd probably lean toward #2.

Hi Darren,

They all sound good to me, especially 2 and 3, there's my excuse to tackle some new techniques for midnight blue on a Corsair, while also being hot for a chance to do a modern jet, maybe do a MiG-29 justice for the first time, or a later-vintage Eagle, Falcon or Hornet. You'd need to set the rule for interpreting what's post-1980 and what isn't: service introduction, prototype or drawing-board? If the latter, the Hornet would date back to 1967 and the Northrop YF-17, which I believe temporarily carried the name Viper!

Another big vote for a BoB, I would very much like to crank out something on that theme again, maybe even complete the one I started for the '08 but never finished (Do-17 Z-2).

Cheers,

Mike

Thats sounds good Darren. I will wait until you are ready to start up number three. I have the 1/48 Hasegawa Me 109 E 4 boxing with Gallands late BoB markings ready to go when ever you are ready to start.

I'd like to do #2. Could it include all belligerents? I've got a Hasegawa Emily and a Mach 2 PBM that both need to be built. That Mariner could be a lot of fun.

And a BoB is always a good thing too.

Martin that sounds like an excellent suggestion, a 70th anniversary build will be awesome.

Even though i am upto my neck in GB's, if you are looking at a 12 month running time, i might well be tempted. I would go with the fast movers.

As for a BoB GB, great idea, but how about waiting till next year for the 70th anniversery.

I am a Norfolk man and i glory in being so

Darren-I replied over in the Aircraft section, but I would be interested in either the D-Day or PTO.  And of course I'll scrape up something (and some time) for a BoB later in the year....Whistling [:-^]

Hi Darren,

You already know my answer, I'll build whichever one you pick. I'd also happily join a figures GB if one ever starts.

Cheers

Tony

I'm just taking it one GB at a time.

I can do all three.  #1 and #2 stand to have the most involved if you allow ships and armor in.

I'm with Frank on this one Darren. none of the other choices are appealing to me at this moment. The first two BoB GB's were some of the the best GB ever I was hoping for a third. I understand if you want to do something different though.

New Group Build Poll
Posted by darson on Monday, June 8, 2009 9:09 PM

I have noticed that most of the GBs in this forum are either at their end date or fast approaching them.  So after meeting up with Tony (taxtp) & Richie (simpilot34) last weekend at a Model show we thought about some possible themes for the next GB and decided to put them to the group.

Potentials are:

1.  Invasion of Europe - D-Day to Operations Cobra/Goodwood

2.  Pacific War - PTO 1941 - 1945

3.  Fast Movers - Modern Jets 1980+

Where possible (1 & 2) I'd open it up to ships, AFVs & aircraft.  I am thinking of a start date of 1 July 09 and have the build run for 9 to 12 months.  Let me know what you guys think and if there is enough interest we'll kick things off.

Results Tally (So Far)

1.  9 votes

2.  8 votes

3.  3 votes

Cheers
