Guadalcanal Campaign Group Build updated with new end date
Posted by stikpusher on Thursday, June 11, 2009 9:23 PM

Most of the GBs from the beginning of the year are starting to wind down now. Who would be interested in participating in a GB of any subject related to the Guadalcanal Campaign. I had been mulling over this idea for a couple months now and thought of the dates running thru the duration of the actual battles- August thru February. Subjects would be for anything involved- ships, aircraft, figures, armor, etc.

Anybody interested in partaking?

So it looks like this will be a go. We have five who say yes for this GB

So far we have:

Myself: Tamiya 1/300 Yugumo COMPLETED

Bondoman: USS San Francisco (Trumpeter 1/350?) COMPLETED

Vetteman: Tamiya 1/48 F4F-4 COMPLETED

Hans von Hammer: Monogram 1/48 P-400 COMPLETED

Jay12472: 1/700 Tone

Summit: Trumpeter 1/350 USS Washington (conversion from USS North Carolina)

MAC:Tenaru/Alligator Creek Diorama (I really want to see this!) COMPLETED

GSPatton44 Hasegawa 1/48 B5N2 Kate (Zuikaku air Group) COMPLETED

Silentmodeler: Revell 1/32 F4F-4

M1 A1 A2 Tanker- Tamiya 1/700 Suzuya

Mucker- 1/48 or 1/24 A6M (final variant/scale tbd) COMPLETED

satch ip- 1/48 Accurate Miniatures P-400 COMPLETED

and possibly Jmart

So for the Group Build details- Kits of any scale and subject, land, sea, or air, Allied, or Japanese, are all welcome. They just must be depicted as during their participation during the Guadalcanal Campaign. Start date August 7, 2009 thru end date April 18, 2010. Crossovers are allowed. Partial builds needing completion are welcome. Please let me know the manufacture and scale of your kit(s). No cut off date for joining at this time. If you can join in late December and have it finished by the end date, go for it.

Above all lets enjoy what we are building and learn something about this important battle in the South Pacific.

Carlos, I'm intrigued. I'd correct your subject line to "campaign".

I would be pleased to participate, with the USS San Francisco CA-38 which I've got all the PE and resin guns for, started but haven't gotten too far. I have all the paint too. Count me in.

Bondo, thanks for the heads up on my typo... now corrected!

OK, then if we can get a few more folks to join this GB will be a go! If so, I'll put you down for the USS San Francisco- a perfect subject for the build with her significance to the Naval Battle of Guadalcanal.

Hey Stikpusher Sounds interesting. I will have to do a bit of research and see if I have an aircraft kit that will fit in and wouldnt be able to start the build until November.

Stik I would suggest that you set a start date of August 7. I also see where Dragon has a set of USMC with one each M1, Springfield , BAR and Reising gun (?). Pardon my non-knowledge of the marks.

I'll start the CA-38 on 11/13/09.

Great idea.... may overlap with the War in the Pacific GB though, will you allow crossovers? I was going to do the old classic 1:350 Tamiya Fletcher DD-445 for that one. Do you have final dates? cheers

Yes Crossovers will be allowed... they are more than welcome. I think it will overlap with the Pacific War GB, but that has an even broader subject base possibilities. I am gonna be doing the Tamiya 1/300 IJN Yugumo, so it looks like the ships have the majority here so far of all possible commitments.

Start date will be August 7, 2009 and I will have to check my library for the end date in February 2010.

Okay, the dates for this will run from August 7, 2009 (to commemorate the day of the initial landings) to Feb 9, 2010 (the date the island was declared secure, ending the campaign).

You're best bet is to research idividual ships here

http://www.combinedfleet.com/kaigun.htm

A major prtion of the Combined Fleet was involved at one point in the campaign or another.

Jason, the Tone would be an excellent choice. She was very much involved with the campaign's battles. Welcome aboard, I wil put you down for this.

I heard a Very Good Recommendation for this GB.  Sometime during the month of September I will be starting on the 1/350 Trumpeter North Carolina to convert into BB-56 USS Washington. The ship my Dad spent most of WWII on. If you got room for atother I would be Happy to Join in.

Welcome Aboard Summit! And an excellent choice for a subject- the Washington was critical to the campaign.

Stikpusher Quote:

Hans von Hammer: P-39, SBD, or P-38 (guessing Monogram 1/48?)

You know of any other kind??? Big Smile [:D]

I know the boxes read "Revell", but we know the truth...

Just a little CAF trivia..

When I first joined the CAF back in '84, the P-39 was based outta San Marcos, TX and really DID have Soviet markings...  It had gone to Russia via the Northern route, came back via the same route 35 years later, and was still placarded in Cyrillic script when I did the cockpit checkout in it.. Decals are wrong though... The CAF 'Cobra had yellow-outlined stars, not white..

No I dont... Smile,Wink, & Grin [swg] 'cept for some of those foreign jobs.... but if ya look at the copyight stamp in the moldings the speak the truth.

I must say though, that variant of P-38 did not appear until after the Guadalcanal Campaign concluded.

Whoopsie.. Yer right... So scratch the Lightning.. In fact, lock me in with the P-39 (P-400, actually.. You know the old joke, right? P-400 = A P-40 with a Zero behind it, lol..)

LOL! Ok P-400 it is... I am building that same kit now, but in Russian markings for the Lend Lease GB. It even comes with two sets of decals for Guadalcanal Airacobras, the P40 with the Zero behind it, and a P-39D. Nice choice!

List updated.

No need for this to be on pg 2 Shock [:O]

I am very much looking forward to the start date on this one. I ordered some P/E railings and looking into maybe some new barrels for the 16 inchers Cool [8D]

OK, about three weeks to go until this Group Build kicks off.

Here is my rough draft of what I have in mind for the GB badge. I dont have Photo Shop so I can't tweak it enough to get the flags matched in size and such, but if anyone here does and would be willing to do that (and any other fine tuning), it would help greatly.
