Thanks! I've not been successful with maksing camo patterns before - to be honest. I just refused to give up on it this time and I'm ok with it. I need to get the fading part done now. Hopefully just some light sanding to let the lighter shades underneath come through.

I got some great advice about stencils in this forum and it worked out awesome! I never want to use decals for insignia again!

Hey Axeman, Your last link worked and I got to take a look at your Stuka. NICE!!!!!  Excellent job on the camo and swastikas. Were the swastikas painted with stencils?

strange. All I'm doing is pasting the picture into the post like I have before. I wonder what's changed that makes this not work. Of course, it's working for me..... Let's try this one.

Linky is still broken.  I don't know where you are posting them but it might not be someplace where they can be viewed off of a forum like FSM.

Photobucket definitely works better than this.

Hey Axeman, I would love to see your pics but I am getting error messages when I click on your links, thus unable to access the site. Maybe you could post some to our thread.

The Ventura is on a temporary hiatus as I got all caught up on my Spitfire for the Spit GB. Figured I would get the cockpit completed abd fuselage halves toether then turn back on the PV 1 for a bit. Looking forward to those pics.

It actually ended up being both.  It was originally designed and built to be a pure fighter.  The Fuhrer had other plans and insisted that it be built as a bomber.

It was redesigned and then built as a fighter bomber that could carry a 500kg bomb load  (1100 lbs).  It was able to carry the full bomb load but required the rocket assist packs to help get it into the air.

Thus while they were definitely fighters, they were also used as bombers.

Thanks for the link. I ordered a set. These should be exactly what I want. I have 3 more german projects on the shelf so I can see these being worth the investment. I've got a 109e, 109g and 262 waiting to be built. Now the question is this.... is the 262 a fighter or a bomber? Smile

This weekend I went to Kingcon here in Memphis. (local IPMS model contest)  While there one of the vendors had a bunch of aftermarket  accessories for models.  One of the items were some stencils for WW2 German aircraft in Stainless Steel.  They were a little pricey, but there was a ton of stencils in the package and it had quite a bit of heft to it.  The quality of the stencils is quite nice (Yes I bought the stencil set) Letters, numbers insignia and base level markings.

Check them out here:  http://www.am-works.com/store/aw001-wwii-german-aircrafts-p-13.html

Dont know. I posted and "joined" in because I was going through my bomber stash. I've done a val, sbd and working a stuka.

Here's my question fopr anybody following this thread. I dont want to use decals for anything on the stuka. I'd like to paint all of them, since there aren't many - I'm doing a night intruder. What do you use for a stencil? The expermiments I've tried have ended in disaster.\

Thanks!

I just ran across this post.  I'm wondering if it is too late to get in on this build?  I have a number of bomber kits that I could enter.  Most are navy patrol or carrier based bombers and a G4M Betty.  Please let me know.  Thanks.

John

That's looking real nice there Axeman. I can relate to the camera issue as mine has its limits and I especially can't get good close ups yet I do the best as I can. It's good to see some activity in this GB I'm looking forward to seeing some of the builds. I.ve taken a short hiatus from the Ventura to work on my Spitfire Mk Vb for the spit GB but I'll get some work in here shortly.

I think the preshading looks great. I've never been that good at not completely painting over it myself. I think I'm getting better at not over doing the layers of paint. I'm about to paint the camo on the stuka. Maybe yuo can see the fading I did on the green in this picture. I'm not a good photographer and I cant seem to get the camera set right to show a really good representation.

Glad to here your back at the Stuka Axeman. Hopefully you can correct the shading experiment. My Ventura is my first attempt at pre shading. I've got the underside insignia white airbrushed on and so far I am not displeased with the results. I'm currently masking for the itnermediate blue. I too hope to get pics up soon.

Now that little league is over (for now) I can get back on my Stuka. I tried an experiment with shading that I need more practice with. Looks like a street walker it's so over done. Will post pictures when they are family friendly!

Here's a few pics of my progress. Unfortunately I totally spaced taking any before and after pics of the puttying and sanding. I can relate to the lack of bench time Axeman as I just started back up at my second job, part time at the used bookstore, and it definitely cuts into the liesure time. It's great to share with you and I am looking forward to some of your progress pics. I hope some of the other folks get back on this as i'd like to some other builds as well. More later (hopefully soon).

Good deal. I've done next to nothing. Little League Baseball 5 nights a week kills modeling time. I did manage to get the first coat of green on last week. I'm going to go back and shade the panels. After that I'll put the darker color on in the splinter pattern. I'm planning on using flat black mixed with some blue and see how that looks. I'll experiment on my test bed (a PzIII I never finished).

Well, i have made some progress on the Ventura, albeit not a whole lot. Wings and tail on followed by copious amounts of putty and Mr. Surfacer. A coat of Tamiya white primer is on and sanded. Next up will be some pre-shading. I'll get some picks on here right soon.

I haven't received my issue yet but I am excited to read the article on modeling raised panel lines as I have a hand full of old kits (Matchbox 1/72 PB4Y Privateer and Heinkel He 115) that I am dying to build yet not to keen on rescribing.

I'm making slow progress on on the Ventura. The filling and sanding over and over is close to being done and I am about ready to shoot Chromate green on the clear part frames then a primer of Tamiya white which is no doubt going to reveal further filling and sanding. i'll be working up some update photos soon.

Looking forward to some pics of the Stuka. Joe

Got my new issue of FSM today. There's an article about modeling with raised panel lines. It expalins why I lost the effect as the more I worked on it. It wasnt the future, it was sanding through the undercoat on the panel lines! Ok, Dave is smarter that I was. Thanks!

The Stuka is progressing well. I went out an primered it to see how the seams looked and it's pretty good. I'll post something once I've gotten the preshading of the panel lines done. I made one small mistake I'm a bit embarassed about. I grabbed my can of primer and it was actually gloss. Yuck. With the humidity here it will be a week until that dries.

Yes, the future did it. Maybe it was washing off "dust" from sanding? When I did my first sanding I was "OH MAN I've Nailed this kit!" and I'm a little disappointed. The wings just never got back to where they were. The fuselage was pretty much the result of the blasted decals not working and having to paint them myself. The tamiya tape ripped the paint off in a nice pattern and I left it. Nefver painted insignia before this kit either. Will be doing it on the Stuka I'm doing now.
