Yup I'm in for round two! This one should be easier than the Buchon I build for the first one due to its painted bottom side. I have a feeling the Hobbycrap kit is going to need filler thought!

Actually that kit builds up very  nicely. It fits together quite well. I have one that is about 85% built and almost ready for paint. It has some flaws, but lots of potential as well.

vetterman42, simpilot34 and Julez,

So far this F-86 is turning out quite nice. I can now say that NMF also means "No More Fear" and I will be doing more in the future.

I got the landing gear and landing gear doors on last night and hope to start decaling this evening. This GB was just the push I needed to move into the NMF and as been fun.

If its not too late id like to join in with my Italeri/Testors 1:48 P-47 Chief Ski-o-watha. Looking at the kit theres going to be alot of work involved. Im going to try and get hold of an AM cockpit for it since its pretty spartan as is. Otherwise itle be made pretty much OOB.

Okay gentlemen (and SC)... despite being away from the bench for some springtime duties, I have a small amount of progress to share on the XF-91.

I did some filing and sanding on the rear of a fuselage half to try and correct the shape of it. The area was too large. Notice the original part on the right... the fuselage lines toward the back of the plane are at an angle like they will meet each other and then they kind of straighten out and level off before they reach the exhaust opening. The left one is the corrected fuselage half. Notice how the lines in the fuselage stay at the same angles all the way to the rear of the plane. It needs a little fine tuning but it looks right. Compare to the original Thunderceptor photo below.

It took alot of filing, sanding and eye-balling to get her in that shape. Black Eye Good thing the plastic is really thick!

Hard to see from this view but the corrected half is on the left.

With both sides finished, I hollowed out the rear. Like many planes of the era, the XF-91 had the engine tailpipe in the fuselage surrounded by the outer sheet metal.

And from what I can tell, the F-84 tailpipe should be about the right size and look to use as the J-47. If not, we'll always think that it should have been. Wink

I just need to figure out how I want to mount it in the fuselage and add some internal framework. Everything is rather rough right now but it will all come together eventually. Yes

ScorpioMikey Welcome Sign to the shiny side, your build is listed on the front page. I gotta say your choice of subject is a good one as my first NMF build using foil was the same kit. Fits arent the greatest and detail is lacking but it built up into a model just the same. Cant wait to see your progress.

Jmabx wow you have put in a lot of work already but it looks worth the trouble as the fuse looks 100% better after your work.

HELP!!!

I have no idea WTF happened, but after first rubbing down the model with some alcohol and a J cloth, I sprayed it with a 50/50 mix of Tamiya black and alcohol, and I see these flat textured spots everywhere! What could have caused this? There was no sign of anything like this before I painted it- the surfaces all looked fine. I am concerned the Alclad will look the same. Should I give it a coat of Future before the Alclad? Any suggestions appreciated. I have no desire to strip it.

Maxfax not being one of the NMF paint experts here I have had the problem you are having with Tamiya paints. I found that the alcohol evaporates way too fast for the paint to self level. I have had much better luck thinning Tamiya paints with distilled or purified water in a 50/50 mix. I would guess if you buff or lightly sand the paint then future coat it that it would be fine, however I would suggest you wait on a few others to chime in before going to that trouble because I could be very wrong about that. I have stripped freshly painted parts that were painted with Tamiya acrylic paints with 91% alcohol and a bit of torn up t-shirt and q-tips with not much trouble at all.

Max I have never had that problem using alchohol with Tamiya paints so not much help there, however, I would think that if they are just flat sheen spots then a coat of future will bring everything in line with each other.2 cents If you have a test piece(old kit) try to create the same effects and see if a coat of future wil fix it, and if not, try different things to see if they will work. As mentioned though, you are using Tamiya paints, stripping will not be hard, just time consuming. HTH some!!YesToast

As of this afternoon, I have finished applying all the major markings on my F-84. All thats left to do are the kit supplied stncils and the MiG kill markings. I am not very impressed by the Cuting Edge brand decals I used. While supposedly scaled for this kit, many do not fit quite right, and the ones applied to compound curve areas are not responding well to the usual applications process of Micro Set and Micro Sol. Not to mention that the large "buzz numbers" for the nose were not in one piece, but rather individual letters, numbers, and dashes to be applied one at a time.  Hopefully by the end of this weekend I will have all the stencils applied and the decaling process complete.Black Eye

No worries there my friend, the line is discontinued. If you don't have them already, you will pay a high price to get them. But in all fairness I do have say that they have excellent choices in subject matter. But their quality was just not what I expected. I was expecting a quick easy application of buzz numbers this afternoon, instead of the concentration for alignment it ended up requiring.

Rob, That is unusual, i reckon give it a wet sand and lay down a coat of future...If that doesn't work you may have to strip itTongue Tied

Stik, sounds like your approaching the finish line.....we want picsCamera

Well i started another Mustang, got her ready for paint and the P-38 is ready for an undercoat.....Pics soon...
