Eric I like your test idea and can see a variance in shades in the spoons that I do like. Nice progress on the T6 too. But ummm you posted this in round III. Could you repost it in round IV here's the link.

Reporting in on the quest to build an NMS model with as little lacquer as possible. I hope nobody was too concerned about WIP pics on a $12 Revell Texan, but as you can see it's together and primed with Vallejo primer. This was the first Revell kit I've built since I was a nipper. It wasn't bad for the money, and it does look the part. Detail was reasonable. Fit was okay - only one serious wacko on the airscoop - but nothing really went together cleanly. Anyway, I did a lot of sanding and prep, so we'll hope for the best. This is a kind of styrene laboratory. I want to make a decent kit (the Texan is actually a very handsome plane to my eyes) and learn what I can about NMS paints and weathering NMS finish and I assume I'll run into problems of my own making. But the raw material is adequate.

Now to the spoons. The first spoon pic are of three dedicated "metallizer" paints. From left to right they are 1.  Hawkeye Talon - a true water based acrylic; 2. Gunze Super Metalizer Stainless Steel; 3. Gunze Super Metallizer Superfine Silver. The Gunze's were painted on black primer and the Talon on a clear brew of Golden GAC 200 (a hardener) and Golden Airbrush Medium. (For some reason I neglected to add the Talon I did on a black primer.) Do note that I made no particular effort to make sure the spoons were in perfect shape. I'd been sanding enough and figured I'd get the picture without the bother and I did. I don't have Alclad to compare them too, but I'd say all three are very good. The Gunze's are lacquer's - not to be confused with standard Mr. Colors. They were not hard to deal with - not too noxious and requiring very little lacquer thinner for misting coats. (I did all spoons at about 18 psi using multiple light coats - shows the tank building and Golden fluid experience I guess - all of that is best done with a slow build up.) They dried very quickly and I think look very good. I know other reviewers consider them the equal of Alclad. I was very impressed with the Talon - which has just gone out of business. As noted I'm used to low psi painting so I found Talon easily applied. It appears lighter because it's on a white background but I can see the white handle on the Gunze superfine spoon and it looks almost the same. I'd be glad to live with that paint. Absolutely wonderful to use: no odor, quick dry, results that will be perfect for anything I'd do. Now, what we'll be seeing is how these guys do with Future put on them. I've been told not to put clear on these colors but I'm going to as long as I'm only losing spoons. Must remember the plane is going to get a good dose of weathering. Spoon 1:

Spoons 2 are water based acrylics. From left to right are 1. Golden Fluid Silver over black; 2. Golden Fluid Silver over Gac/white plastic; 3 Coat d' Arms (formerly Citadel); 4. Pollyscale Pistol Silver. As it stands none of them gives as fine a coat as the first batch. However, I think any of them would do the job, and after a polish and some future on them they might look better yet.

Will report in as the spoons get coated and polished. Hopefully I'll know enough tonight to decide whether or not I'll need a black coat on top of the primer. As things stand, consider the fact that each paint held very nicely to plain plastic, I'm inclined to leave well enough alone.

I was gonna do both, but I'm changing the markings on the B and I don't think they meet the 50% NMF requirement.  The upper third of the fuselage, the entire rudder, and the tops of the wings are in OD and it carries a full set of invasion stripes.  So I think only the D will meet the requirements.

These are the markings I had in mind....if they you think it's ok then I'll do both the B and D but I dont think it's 50%

Redraider56 I will accept these markings in the group It is a bit less than 50% but close enough IMHO. So announce your builds in round IV and I will gladly get them listed on the front page. BTW they are cool markings for a P-51.

Krahan WOW! When asked for pictures I got em ! Sweet build man !! Love the tones you achieved in the finish, your daughter done good I tell ya. It looks heavily used but well maintained at the same time. I like the fact that you chose to show the engine too, and what really catches my eye is the slightly crazed canopy and windshield, a very effective touch it is. To you and your daughters fine work.

Academy F-86f, with Revell decals and a basic diorama base. Used Alclad airframe aluminum, jet exhaust, and MM metalizer lacquers. Model Master Enamels for detail colors. Weathered using sepia and black acrylic washes by my 5 year old daughter. Total time to complete, about 86f months off and on.hope you guys enjoy.

I agree for the most part.  It's understandable to a certain degree for civilians to act the way they did.  They tended to be more hostile than soldiers because they would just be going about their everyday duties and people were bombing them.

To be fair, we did kill their sons and brothers and fathers and sisters and mothers, too.  If we went to war today, had enemy aircraft over our skies bombing our cities and killing our people, and an enemy pilot goes down, do you really think that the local civilians would treat him cordially? Heck no! It's human nature to get revenge/retribution on those who hurt you.

Great things can happen because of bad things.....I destroyed my P-51 by accidentally stepping on it, but I just picked up another Tamiya D (on sale for $17 at the LHS) and while browsing some decals for possible markings, I came across a very interesting and tragic story.

I bought an Aeromaster sheet with some markings for 55th FG birds, and the one that caught my eye was Katydid flown by Col. Elwyn Righetti.  Righetti was the top scoring US ground ace in the ETO, with 27 destroyed planes to his credit.  He scored another 7.5 victories in the sky.  He did all this despite arriving in England in October of 1944 with no combat experience.  On April 17th 1945, his 30th birthday, he was attacking an airfield near Dresden.  He had destroyed 9 aircraft on the ground when his Mustang was hit by flak and he was forced to crash land.  He radioed to his wingman that he had broke his nose and forced to belly land, but said to tell his family he was ok, that he was honored to fly with him and that he would see him in a few days.  Righetti was neither seen or heard from again.  Just three weeks before the end of the war, it is believed Righetti came across some angry German civilians who killed him shortly after his crash landing.  He was the c/o of the 55th FG at the time he went missing.  He was given credit for the 9 ground kills giving him 34.5 kills overall, and was posthumously promoted to Lieutenant Colonel.

And something I just found today.  He gained ace status on Feb 3rd, 1945 when he shot down a pair of German Mistels.  Confirmed kills were 2 Ju-88s and one Fw-190 with another 190 probable.  This is a still from his gun camera that day.

The open cowl and gun bays are worth the extra effort in this scale for sure. Another nice touch is the added pilot figure.  I will be updating the front page with your build shortly.

well heres a big update i've got the decals on(suprisingly no silvering) and all of the weathering as well sorry no pictures of just decals but the base coat of weathering which goes in the order of promodeller black wash for some panel lines, Mig productions brown wash for a dirty look but still just panel lines then mig productions black pastel chalk for a real dirty look along with some chrome silver metalizer for chipping all in all I really like the dirty look these planes were used as work horses even the pretty ones were worn down heavily from what i can see in books and black and white pictures anyways here are the updated pictures....I'm still waiting for a replacement windscreen..

An amazing build I must say. My last for a long time, maybe even for good (yeah yeah we modellers always say that dont we?) Not perfect by a long shot but I feel it came together pretty well.

As I said before, work on this plane is quite fiddly and time consuming. There are no guiding slots or pins of any kind to help cure halves together. The wings have been especially fiddly. Having to do them with CA glue and hold everything by hand until it starts to harden....grrr.....

I would ask a favor of all who are starting builds this late do feel free to post WIP pictures here, I know I want to see them and not wait for round IV to begin. But I would ask if you could please repost your opening pictures also in the next round too. I for one like to go back and see the wip pictures when builds are finished, I have gotten some very good ideas doing this, it just makes it easier to do that.
