Big Beautiful Jugs - OFFICIAL P-47 GROUP BUILD
Posted by DoogsATX on Saturday, November 12, 2011 10:35 AM

Since I've joined up, there's been a P-38 group build, a Spitfire group build, a B-25 group build...

Yeah, well, they ain't Jugs.

I don't think every plane can support its own group - but the P-47 can. The variants, the markings, the theaters of combat, the different nations it served with, and the plethora of kits across manufacturers and scales.

The build will kick off December 21st (marking the 70th anniversary of the first P-47B delivery) and run through 2012.

The Ground Rules:

  • Crossovers are totally cool
  • Partial kits within reason. And by reason I think drawing the line at "fuselage glued together" is reasonable.
  • You can build any kit you want. So long as it's a P-47.

I'd totally be in.  I've got a 1/48 Tamiya Razorback with the cockpit finished but nothing else that's been waiting for a chance to come back out.  I'll be on Christmas vacation by that time, so I should hopefully have a nice week and a half to work on it.

I think I've got a few jugs lying around waiting for the right occasion.  This is as good reason as any.  Put me down for a Razorback, 1/48.  Not sure yet of manufacturer.  Either Tamiya, Otaki, or Revellogram.

Yay!  I was all set to start on the Trumpeter 1/32 'dorsal fin' version, but was easily distracted by a newly arrived ebay steal on a recent binge (Eduard 1/32 Emil) that I should finish by the end of the year.

Put me down for the P-47 D-30 'Slick Chick' 433221.  I may not be able to do it justice but I'll try.  It will be the first serious run for the Alclad collection (used it on the NM front intakes on the Me 262 Yellow 3, and it worked great.)

Kit by Trumpeter, decals by Kits-World.

I'm interested in this one as well.  Currently don't have any in the stash, but by 21 Dec I'm sure I can grab a couple kits.  I can let ya know which ones when I get them.

Hi DoogsATX, I don't know if I can commit to building anything yet, but I would like to follow along. This should be a cool GB!

Yep - same one! Now that it's getting closer figured it's time to toss up the actual thread.

XP-47H! Woohoo! What scale? Assuming you'll be doing a conversion job?

Doogs,

I would like to join. Going to go with 2 "D" versions Razorback and a Bubbletop. Both are in 1/72 scale. The Razorback is from Hasegawa and the Bubbletop is Academy with some AM decals. Looks like December will be WWII building month with this and the Pearl Harbor GB for me. It will be a nice break from jets.

I might add a P-47N from Revell I picked up a month or so ago. If I can catch up on my other 3 builds or so I can do it.

Doogs, this one sounds way too good to pass on. Please count me in with a 1/72 Tamiya razorback. Thanks! Yes

I'd love to join this one if you guys will have me!

I'm still not very good with airplanes so it's a great chance at learning for me. I have two P-47D kits and don't know which would be best for me to tackle. I believe both are Gabreski's plane. One is Hasegawa's 1/32 version. Kit # ST27 08077. The other is Academy's 1/48 Special edition, kit # 12222, Gabreski.

Which of those two would you all recommend?

Hey Doogs,

Would love in on this GB!

I have two P-47s in my stash and this is as good a reason as any to get started on one.

Put me down for Tamiya's 1/48 P-47M.  (The other in my stash is Tamiya's 1/48 P-47D Bubble Top, but i'm not confident enough in my NMF skillz to put that forward just yet).

Apart from maybe some seat harnesses, mine will be OOB.

Okay...think I got everyone updated on the build roster! This one's shaping up to be fun!

satch - man I hear ya. Currently wavering between "Magic Carpet" with Tamiya's Razorback, "Fireball" with the -M Jug, or saying screw it and tackling "Raid Hot Mama" with the big Trumpy Razorback. Or something completely different!

lewbud - which variety of D is that RoG kit? Razorback, Bubbletop?

Electric Blues - I don't have the Academy D, but I have the Academy N, and between it and the big Hasegawa, I'd vote Hasegawa hands down. To me, the Academy is a solid enough kit, but if I'm building a -D in 48th, I'd rather stick with either the simple fun of the old Revellogram (IMO their best 1:48 fighter of that era) or just go all in with the masterful Tamiya kit. That and Jugs in 1/32 are just awesome to behold, even in the box.

cml - Love the -M...any idea what scheme you're thinking yet? Not that there are many to choose from! I actually learned the other day that Lifelike decals makes markings for Dave Schilling's (56th's CO after Zemke) last P-47, which was apparently the first M the squadron received:

I've got something of a man-crush on Schilling (along with the 52nd's CO John Meyer), so of course those markings were an immediate order for me!
