MARDIS GRAS is finally completed!  Not too bad overall with some good points learned along the way for the remaining LVT4s in the stash.  I will post my finished pics in the Armor Forum as well and provide the laundry list of tweaks made.

Here's my entry for the group Build

CARL - Thanks man Yes

ANDY - Yes sir, thats what I'm sayin, glad you like it.  This one never really left the bench just taking more time to make some odd things with the base.  Have also painted the "Woodpecker" MG and scratch built a crate to go along with it.

The painting is not perfect but does not have to be because it will receive "burnt" weathering as if torched by a flame thrower as well as the rest of the bunker.  Have also been playing around with the structure of the bunker.  Trying different things to achieve a concrete texture.  Will go with this bunker being concrete, after much more research and with the help of a new book "Iwo Jima" found that almost all the bunkers on Iwo were concrete.

Whatca going to do with that LVT-4 you have there Stick out tongue

DEATTILIO - Nice weathering and painting!  The worn and wearing paint on the sides of the LVT-4 looks really good.  What did you use to achieve this?  With further weathering this should make a really faded / worn look and is a great and accurate effect on these LVT's.  The camo job is coming along very nicely also.  There were some crazy camo schemes with the large wave pattern squiggles, like how yours is turning out Yes

Have fun at the air show and take lots of pictures.

ANDY - Agree with Carl, your going to need a bigger house!!!  Nice score Yes

A little work was done on the base, just getting the frame built.  Looks like I could have just used a picture frame but I did not do this and instead built my own frame in order to meet certain requirements I was after.  The over all size, a recess or countersink for the foam board to sit into, and the hight which means the space left under the foam.  The space underneath is important because there will be lots of plumbing and a homemade smoke generator mounted.  Dont look like much but here are the pics.

Deattilio- Looking great... that's a very unique camo I have seen so far.  Just let you know I am still following your process.

And...

I hope you will ever forgive me because I did something terrible last Friday in Auburn at AMPS show.

Do you see something that might get you all excited? Stick out tongue  Got it for only $26... I thought it was a good deal and it comes with a set of Marines and they looked good too.

My Iwo Jima LVTA-4 received a bit more camouflage to the hull sides.  This essentially completes the lower hull, aside from minor touchups where the paint lifted with tape and to even out couple lines.  Weathering should tone down the finish; it looks a bit bright at the moment.

I won’t be making any progress next weekend, I will be in Chino to attend the annual Planes of Fame air show.  But, when I do get back to the LVT I will be applying the camouflage to the topside.

Progress continues, I have started the weathering process on “MARDI GRAS.”  I’ve only done the port side, cargo deck and ramp but should make a little more progress around the other side and topside tomorrow.  The four sets of tracks are also connected/linked so I can complete them all in one sitting.

Very nicely made crates Rob Yes Is there any way of "cheating " on the number of them you have to make by only doing the sides that will be seen from the outside of a pile of them on the pallet ?

Here's what I have done for crates so far.

These are the ones I want to make many more of.  The plan is to have a pallet of these loaded in the LVT with some guys breaking into some of the crates for more ammo.

This type a few more need to be made.  They will be in the bunker.

Unsure if these things are worth making?  They are VERY time consuming and am still not sure how they will look once painted.  Guess I should paint some before making more to see if I like them.

OH no, Dont let Gunny find out Crying

Carl, how does $44,556.00 sound

Now have a question for yall,  Have collated many things mainly referring to the structural pieces for the bunker, the pieces I have now are for making a bunker constructed of logs / palm trees but I believe all the bunkers on Iwo Jima were made of concrete.  Were there LVT-4's sporting the three tone camo on other islands that would of had the log bunkers?  If not Will have to come up with a way to make a concrete bunker which I still may do.  Dont have any pics yet put I am still working on the base and am hoping it will be to a point by this weekend to get a pic posted.  I am customizing the base to fit things like I want it and will be adding some smoke effects: the bunker will be smoking with real smoke as if had been burnt out with a flamethrower.  This has been taking me some time to do.

Riff  Raff sounds good.  Was a common thing seen on USMC vehicles.....even though it was not authorized.  My vehicle was named the "Smoke Wagon" and was painted across the drivers door.  Hope I did not get myself in trouble saying that Indifferent

Good info from WBill and Coffeex12

Well thanks very much for the complement Rob !  I'm going to do more research also . I will go with a number on the turret and i'll see about the other USMC markings . I was also thinking of naming this tank also , "Riff Raff" ..........? Maybe on the starboard front side hull ? O.k. good , some markings on the box .

About the Future . I've used it b4 on my aircraft models and the results are great . I forgot about using it until i read that post by WBill76 yesterday where he was telling you about it , then  Idea went off in my brain, at the speed of light i might say ......all of those cups of coffee   Coffee really help the brain !Yes
