I'm back from the dead, haha. I haven't been on here for... Years?

All of the P-40's look amazing, sorry for my inactivity.

For those P-40 enthusiasts like me, here's an interesting article: www.chuckhawks.com/p40.htm

Here it is. I've gone for a lightly weathered look. I don't have any photos of this aircraft but I am imagining the pre war aircraft maintenance regime to be quite good, despite the tropical environment in Hawaii. I'll add the guns once they arrive. Hope you like it.

Extra work on this little Airfix kit is a pitot from Microtube, Quickboost exhausts, an etched instrument panel, harnesses from masking tape with etched buckles.

The Starfighter Decals were good, glossy, robust, thin, easy to apply, with just one decal silvering. The buzz number 160 was larger than depicted on the instructions. Incidentally, this same aircraft is now depicted in the 'dogfight doubles' release of this kit.

Cheers

Thanks Trey and Cliff. I've had a crack at that Hasegawa kit. Nice kit, but I think they tried to get too many different versions out of that fuselage.

I've given it a coat of Future applied with a brush, and a restrained panel line wash using oils. I figured the panel lines don't need too much emphasis. The streaks from the future will all disappear nicely when the flat coat is applied.

Cheers

Tony: She looks fine to me! At least you didn't have to deal with those annoying fuselage plugs like the Hasegawa kit!

Looking great Tony, and the panel lines look fine. Too deep is no big deal as long as they are'nt both too wide and deep(like some of my rescribe attempts). Looking forward to seeing the next update, cheers Trey

Thanks for the advice. Ok, I've gone with the internal colour for the inserts. Here are the latest progress shots of my Airfix P-40B. I've seen some commentary on the panel lines that they are 'like Matchbox trenches'. I disagree. They are a little deep, but they're not wide, and I think look OK under some paint. Many of us accentuate the panel lines on our models anyhow. I will say that the construction does require some filler around the wing to fuselage joint. I used CA and it worked out fine. I've included a photo to show that. The cockpit build up is quite impressive out of the box. I woulsn't rule out my doing a few more of these along the way.

I sprayed it freehand with my Iwata, no masking which I looooooove, exxcept for the canopy of course. I used the Eduard set for that, and I'd have to say many of the pieces were oversized for this kit and had to be trimmed. That's the first time I've encountered this and defeats the purpose of using the set.

You'll notice on the way that the model lost it's guns. As I was building it, the thought occurred that the guns are the one piece of aftermarket that this thing really needs. However, shortly after resolving to live with the kit items, I dropped it and wiped them off one of the wings. I've taken it as a sign and drilled out recesses to access the Quickboost set when it finally arrives.

I've just given it a coat of gloos, although that was after these photos were taken.

Cheers

Looking great Tony! I've tried to find some proof as to what color that area would be when I built my B and could not find anything conclusive. The b/w pics would seem to suggest it was the interior color as it appears to be a lighter shade in most pics.

I've finally got back to my Airfix Hawk 81. It will be finished in Pearl Harbour markings from the Starfighter Decals sheet.

This is the cockpit, all ready to close up. The kit interior is quite good actually. I've used a Modell-Hobby photo  etched instrument panel, which you really can't see in these photos (I'll try again with a flash), but with a closed canopy  I think the kit decals would be quite acceptable. The harnesses are painted masking tape with some old Model Technologies photo etched buckles that I had lying around, from the very early days of aftermarket goodies being available. It's good to finally use them up. I've also joined the fuselage halves and will fit the wings to fuselage tonight.

The big question I have at the moment is whether the fuselage under the canopy extensions  down the fuselage sides was painted the exterior colour (Olive Drab) or the interior colour (Interior Green) for these early Hawks.

Cheers

Hey RRB: Sorry didn't mean to speak for you, just hadn't seen you around in a while. Thought you might have left with the other guys during the big migration.

Freddie and Lewbud: Those sound really cool, love to see them.

Yay!  I still have time to finish this build.  Put me down for a new tool Airfix P-40.  Will either be Flying Tigers, Pearl Harbor or Russian markings.  I haven't been around much due to my laptop motherboard kicking the bucket and a post Nationals general lack of will to build.  Nice work going on here and congrats to all who have finished.

I'd like to still be on this site, but I have no motivation when it comes to masking.

FJS3: I don't think The Real Red Baron is on this site anymore, I haven't see him in months. If you want to build the P-40 I'd love to see her though, sounds really cool. If you haven't asked you might ask Scorpionmikey about entering his ANZAC GB, course I doubt anyone would have a problem with doing a cross build of both.

I know I'm a little late, but I would love to jump in to this group build. I will build Hasegawa's 1:48 scale P-40 M in Royal New Zealand Markings. I loved the last P-40 group build I was in and can't wait to get cracking on this one as well. Nice work do far by everyone!

Thanks Cliff,I'm sure there is some sort of app that would make the props blur but I've yet to find it. Even if I did my low computer skills would probably prevent me from figuring out how to use it!

Ohhhhh love the in flight photos! Is there any photo manipulation software out there to make the prop appear to spin?

Thanks Cliff glad ya like the drinking straw prop protectors;) I've had to go back and fix some missed blems on some seams and lost some of the raised details in the process.

The kit supplied gunsight was too big and bulky so I scratched one out of wire and stretched sprue

Tony off to a nice start!

Cliff that came out awesome, killer weathering ! Your paint skills are top notch,do'nt sweat that white stripe I doubt even the rivet counters would'nt have missed it had you not brought it up and it looks sweet without it,Very nicely done Sir!

I've got the office going and a figure I pilfered from another kit.

Tony: Thanks! I think she did fight in the Pacific, not totally sure, I just liked the nose-art!

Nice work there on the P-40B, almost ready to close her up!

That looks really good Cliff. I like the pre shading effect. Overall, it's a realistic looking model. I am assuming from the white tail and leading edges that this aircraft operated in the SW Pacific theatre ?

I've finally made a start on my Airfix 1/72 P-40B,  here's the first photo.

Cheers
