OFFICAL NATURAL METAL FINISH GB IV 2012-2013
Posted by vetteman42 on Thursday, May 24, 2012 12:22 PM

WELCOME ONE AND ALL TO ROUND IV OF THE NMF GROUP BUILD

Rules

The number ONE RULE is to have fun.

Anything finished with foil, paint, or what ever else you use for a natural metal finish.

We have been building aircraft, but can you picture a blinged out show tank ? Any subject, as long as it is a metal finish will be accepted.

The model should be at least 50% NMF. Any scale would be fine, and you can use all the aftermarket stuff you would like or build OOB. Cross overs are welcome, as are partial starts, but no more than 30% completed on the partial builds. Carry overs from round III will also be accepted.

WIP pictures are a must  They are lotsa fun to share, and we all learn from them.

This will be a 1 year long build starting June 1, 2012 and ending June 1, 2013.

So build 1 or 2 or more. And feel free to take a badge when you sign up, gotta give it back if you don't finish though.

The goal of the group is to have fun, build some fine looking models, and to learn something new.

The new group badges are here finally, here they are.

I'll just do the 1/48 Tamiya P-51D right now in markings for Elwyn Righetti's Katydid from the 55th FG.  Markings are still pending for a 1/48 B-26 that may or may not be NMF

Saw the perfect kit at Hobby Lobby a couple days back, so I went to pick it up. This is my second build in more than a couple years (and my first metal finish kit to boot) I just finished off a Tamiya PzKpfW 2 to get my feet wet and try out my new airbrush I got for my birthday, as well as some AIM weathing powders I got from the local train shop.

Anyway, without further ado, the 1/48 Revell F-84G Thunderjet:

it's my first GB too! Fun times all around.

Got a few that fit  the bill. Not sure which one I'm going with just yet, but I'm in with something. Good subject and the start date works for me.

OK Randy, got my kit picked out - something way out of my comfort zone, but what should be a fun build nonetheless. Can you put me down for a Tamiya 1/12 scale Yamaha Virago. Gonna try my luck with a bike. It's an older kit with tons of chrome, which will be stripped off in a bath of Simple Green, cleaned up (lots of mold lines on 'em) and given various Alclad II treatments. Thanks man! Yes

Bookmarking. I seem to enjoy torturing myself with new techniques recently, so this is just "natural" so to speak. Don't know off hand what I have that will fit though...

Darn, may have to visit LHS again...

oh dear she just took a spill right onto the open airbrake flap Tongue Tied

Thankfully the part held up, that was a proverbial pucker moment. Lesson learned tonight: paint pots make absolutely terrible scaffolds to hold up your plane

Also thanks, Vetteman!

Greetings,

Some progress made on my 1/48 Tamiya P-51-D. Here are a few pics. The ones showing the cockpit side walls really exaggerate the intensity of the wash I applied. It actually looks pretty understated. The other pics which might have been more representative were out of focus, and I didn't realize it until I had closed up the cockpit. And yes, I used the cheesy seat belt decal that came with the kit. and have been regretting it. I may see if can retrofit a PE set.

This really is a terrific kit. I started out just doing a little test fitting and discovered the fuselage and wings pretty much just clicked together rock solid. I'm doing a little bit of cleanup on seams now and using just a few dabs of filler. Next, I'll spray the anti-glare panel and then I believe it's on to the metal finish, using MM aluminum and steel metalizers.

Cheers,

Stoutfella

Nice! Have you read SPAR's review of it yet?

I've got two Tamiyastangs in the stash, but this one looks different enough that I may just have to pull the trigger.

Doogs, you're off to a great start on the B-25 - looks awesome, as usual! Yes

Stout, I'm likin' the look of that 'stang! You guys really hit the ground a runnin' here!

PNG - welcome aboard! I'm looking forward to seeing your work! Yes

Work has begun on my Virago. Gotta say these bike kits are pretty cool. The Simple Green worked a treat in removing the chrome plating - only took about 2 days, but they're nekkid as the day they were born. I'll be painting the frame tonight, as it's pretty much together, along with the gas tank, as well as some primer and Alclad on the engine block, heads, and cylinders. Should have some pics up soon.

Lesson learned
Posted by stoutfella on Friday, June 1, 2012 8:30 AM

Greetings,

A minor setback.

Horizontal surfaces attached, it was time to spray the anti-glare panel. I was using MM acrylic olive drab, with a few drops of dark green and a drop or two of black, as the straight OD seems a little brown and a little too light. Mixed and sprayed and all looked well.

Now, just a day or two earlier, I'd read a comment in an old thread warning that you really needed to prime under MM acrylics if you were going to mask it -- that the paint would peel up easily from bare plastic. But I thought, well, I'd never really had that trouble and sprayed away. After the OD, I decided to spray some white around the nose, just as a background for the white stars in the nose ring decal for "Short Fuse Sallee." To do that, I needed to mask off the anti-glare. And, well, see for yourselves, a nice chunk of the OD panel peeled right up.

Sigh. So I'm laying down a coat of gray enamel as primer, which will need a little sanding, then will spray the OD again. Lesson learned: I shoulda listened to the voice of experience from the past.

The NMF IV Group build has officially started ToastYeah

Ok,,,,,,, ok,,,, first order of business, those who went and jumped the gun Devil.

Your atonement will be the sacrifice of one piece of 1/8th dia sprue 6 inches long to the " GOD OF STYRENE " There will be dire, unthinkable consequences if this task is not completed in a timely manner.

Stoutfella nice progress man !!! Sorry to see the minor setback though. I am sure you will get it repaired with no ill effects in short order. I have found with MM acrylics even with a primer I have lifting troubles, so if I am going to be doing a lot of masking over it I shoot a couple of coats of future on first and have very few lifting problems.

B17Pilot your Jug is in and welcome back.

Frightful6 7 you building the Zouki Mura P-51D for the group ?? That is 1/32 scale right ?

PNGbrat your Bald Eagle is in and welcome to the group. I just need the scale and manufacturer of the kit to get you listed on the roster.
