Question? Can we use Paint masks?

I did a Black Cat PBY Catalina "last year?" (Wow time flies) for the Hunting after Dark GB. About a month after I finished it, I found out there was such a creature. To paint the canopy along with the Bubble gun positions I made my own Paint Masks out of masking tape and a very sharp X-Acto knife.

Anybody got a photo of their first ever kit? Could use that with a photo of a shiny perfect version next to it as the badge?

It seems enough guys are ok with this. If deattilio does come back, i hope he won't be offended. I know he had PC problems in the past so not sure if thats why he hasn't been on. But a lot of guys have bought kits especially for this GB, so it would be a shame if it didn't come off.

I think we should stick to the original idea and rules and make this a nice fun and relaxed GB. We just need to come up with a badge, so if anyone has any ideas, they would be more than welcome.

My first kit was a Huey-Hog gunship model UH-1C. as when I was at school "Tour of Duty" was airing on TV.  It was far too advanced for me at the time and most intricate details ended up at obscure angles, and the only paint I had was in tubes from school. When the paint dried most of it flaked off!

Will try to find a Huey Hog on ebay

Hey you all. Bish and I were talking today about two things. 1) The host hasn't posted since Oct 6 and we know that alot of folks have gone out and purchased kits for this build so we both are willing to host this build together, and 2) we discussed moving the build date to sometime after  the holiday  weekend starting the 26th of November. We would like to put it to a vote though. Just let me know what you guys think. If enough are in favor then we'll do it because I'm ready to get started myself. If I look at my kit laying there one more day my eyes are gonna fall out. Anyhow let me know what you all think. Thanks, Joe

Its great when someone else's excitement rubs off on you isn't it?

You got that right. He initially wanted to paint it "the way he wanted to". I educated him on the finer arts of replication. He chose a gray/ light gray color scheme. Now just to get my hands ahold of some decals......

Well I'm looking forward to this build here because my son is so dang fired up about it. He's gonna like the fact that there are dinosaurs being built in here too. I'm getting him up to snuff on airbrush basics (as much as I can with an 8 year old) but he'll get the jist of it. He's a fairly quick learner when he takes the cotton out of his ears and sticks it in his mouth. I'm quite sure I was the same way. Boy the apple didn't fall far from the tree there! The fact that he's really looking forward to this is awesome because he's very selective on what he gets fired up about. Anyhow I can't wait to get started here. See you guys on here and abroad, Joe

Ah, i see what your getting at. Yeah id agree with those colours, id say theres a base coat of bright orange thats been toned down by the duller colours around it too.

I was thinking of modifying mine with Milliput to reflect the changes to Jurassic Park III which depicted them with thin ridges down the snout and spiny quills(?) on the back of the head and neck. I just watched the DVD and they appear to use more blues or blue grays with subtle black striping though the scheme I posted does look very appealing. I guess what I was getting at is what colors do you think are in play here? Looks like desert storm tan, rust, burnt sienna, burnt/raw umber, black, and white could give me the full range I need mixed together with different parts of each for base/highlight/shadow. I just wanted a second opinion because sometimes other peoples eyes see things differently. Smile

People frequently look at current predators for inspiration in dinosaur colouring. Personally i prefer the reptile colourings. Dark greens and grey greens.

If it was me id be painting it like a crocodile, or id be going with the current theory of feathers and painting it like a predatory bird like a hawk or something.

This looks nice for a paintjob on the raptor. Looks like the bottom is a sandy/tan color then the top is a mixture of browns, black, and some rust color. Any opinions on color choices or the highlight colors here? This is a 1:1 scale that sold for $65,000 Surprise

I wouldn't think it has to be an original boxing of the kit as long as its from the se molding. There is no way I'm going to look for a 30+ y/o boxing of a kit that's still being produced.

That's one thing i noticed when looking at some pics on archives for the Airfix kits that were mentioned.  There were some huge differences in the older moldings, but not as much in what I saw since the time of the kits i built years ago.

The main way I knew that the Airfix suggestion was right was that about 90% of the parts for the ones I saw recently-produced kits matched what I remember.  If anything was different, it was the sprue itself and a few more interior parts and some extra bombs that I guess were to add options, but the big ones were the same.

Okay, so I take it that means as close to the original edition as possible.  I'll see what I can get and maybe get that 2-fer for another project.

Thanks for the reminder on the AM decals.  That'll definitely come in handy.

No problemo dude.

That could be an issue, I cant find decals for the bare metal mirage. so unless i recover the original decals, i might have to do a different aircraft. (still doing the mirage in swiss markings, just not the early bare metal one)

Almost every kit is available somewhere. Just a matter of how hard do you want to look for it and how much do you want to spend on it.

Yeah, the cost is the big thing with the Eagle.  $50 and up is a bit much for me right now.  Also, while the memory of building that with my dad is a treasured one, it was the planes that really got me interested in modeling ( I remember asking my dad if the Spitfire literally shot fire at the enemy or used an aerial smokescreen to confuse enemy pilots to earn the name ).

I checked out the Airfix kits you mentioned and they look like a match from what I remember ( as I said, it's been about 30 years ).

Now, next big question: does it have to be the same edition?  I found a 2-fer from Airfix ( has both the Spitfire and the 109 ) that's more recent, but the parts for the 109 that I was able to see look the same as I remember.  There's also the potential issue of 30-year-old decals if we're going with the original issue in my case...

Kugai, one of the exceptions to the aftermarket items rule is that we can use AM decals since the decals that came with alot of the older kits are aged and therefore for the most part ....done for. Have a good one, Joe
