Mike: Far as I know applying the gloss black underneath the Metallizer won't hurt anything. As you said it probably was a good idea considering you pretty much have to use some sort of putty etc.

Looking forward to seeing how she turns out, funny I have never built a F-86. I was looking at some photos in Squadron's 'Air War Over Korea' and there's a photo of Virgil I 'Gus' Grissom with his Sabre - now I want to build one, whenever I find the time...

Son Of Medicine Man

~

Hi Russ,

I am going by pictures from the book "The Modern Phantom Guide:  The F-4 Phantom Exposed" by Jake Melampy.  It is a great book.  It has pictures of every USAF F-4 Phantom variant and every area and angle and they are all in color.  I consider it a "must have" if you are serious about doing a USAF Phantom II.  It is a bit salty in price, $43.95 from Amazon, but it has 1,069 full color images with descriptions so I think it is well worth the price!  They are not small pictures either, since they are spread over 228 pages.  Here is a link:

http://www.amazon.com/Modern-Phantom-Guide-F-4-Exposed/dp/097950645X

Ken

Thanks, Ken!  I know you've mentioned this book a couple of times in other posts but it's a chore trying to find it in these threads. I appreciate the info.

Hi Everyone!

I am pretty excited.  I just made a pretty good score on eBay!  As many of you already know, the RF-101C Voodoo is close and dear to my heart.  A lithograph which has many times been for sale on eBay for $150.00 was today listed for $55.00.  The smoke is still curling off of the mouse buttons!!

It is of the original Mike Machat signed painting titled "Cuban Sightseeing Tour - 1962".  It is also co-signed by WWII ace Lt. Col Clyde East and Col. Joe O'Grady, both of whom overflew the Cuban missile sites.

  Here it is:

I also just ordered a frame for it (it measures 18" x 24").

Wow, Ken! That's terrific! Are the signatures real or are they copied in the lithograph? Either way, that's a real bargain!

I am just guessing that the signatures are real since it is numbered, I will know for sure when it shows up.

Hi Everyone,

I stopped by Hobby Lobby to get the semi gloss acrylic black paint but they didn't have any.  But they did have gloss.  So I bought that and mixed it with my flat to make my own semi gloss.

Here is tonight's progress:

Tomorrow I will finish with some bronze and call it done!

Anyone here have any suggestions for preparing resin before painting?

I've got 84 Mk 82's from Verlinden, smelling of mothballs, literally, to paint.

Avionics bays coming alive with all the detail being added; looks great thus far! As far as your weather Ken, although no snow here in TN. but plenty cold and damp. Finally got some pics of the tank to post. One shows the metal barrel I picked up but that's pretty much the extent of after-market goodies. I have a tendency to over sand them trying to smooth all out so I figured it was worth it.

Nice work Mike!  There is a lot of detail on that tank body!

Ken

Mizer:

That's a great build you have going. I posted this a while back, but can't remember where,

you probably saw this already, but here's a story about a T-34 pulled out of the muck, it had been captured by the Germans and sunk through the ice.....

funny thing about tanks, the wheel bearings always seem to function after 50 years in muck!....lol

There are lots of other links. I knew a guy blown-up by one of those.....Russian Front was a deadly place....

I have read somewhere of using something called bleche-white or something? It's a tire cleaner. and I thought I just read it in one of the latest issues of FSM. I'll have to look back and see.

Found it! April issue, Questions and answers column. Arron Skinner of FSM soaks the parts overnight in Westley's Bleche-Wite tire cleaner. (Yes, that's how it spelled!) I've never used resin parts, so don't accept my word for it!

Cool, Ken! It's coming along nicely! Wish I could be more help but we didn't have much equipment installed in the plane - just our RHAW receiver and two displays. Everything else was in pods so we weren't in the avionics bays much..We did work on the COMM radios as well, and some ILS equipment at times, but I forget where all that stuff was mounted. I do remember the HF radio is in a compartment in front of the vertical stabilizer.

Cheers,

Dom, just saw the video of the T-34 being pulled from the marsh. I had never seen that before. Incredible how the German marking looked brand new and as you mentioned, bogies, tracks etc. moving freely. What a find!

Very true! It's just that I've seen a lot of models of Glenn's bird, but don't think I've ever seen Grissom's fighter ever modeled.

Ken: Congrads! Beautiful painting there, somehow I think the recon VooDoo is even more attractive than the fighter version.

Anyway here are the cockpit photos I promised. Funny my Droid phone takes better close-up photos than my expensive camera...

F4F, all straight from the box except for adding Eduard PE seatbelts. Weird that there was no decal for the instrument panel so I just dry-brushed it. There is a little blue tape in the wheel wells, I find it easier to mask them off from the inside before assembly and pull the tape out when done.

F6F, all the PE came with the kit. Please excuse the sloppy yellow zinc chromate on the back of the seat. Only after assembly I found out the interior of the Hellcat was painted in yellow zinc chromate except for the cockpit which was interior green. The only visible area is seen though the small windows behind the cockpit so I just brushed the area, not much can be seen.

Thanks for that Jim, will dig into that now I have a few days. Not sure if Bleche White, I guess that's like Bleech White is available, but if I can't find the ingredients from Aaron's article, I'll ask him.

Just In: for the sake of LOL, I went and dug up my April issue of FSM, and there it was open to page 49, where Aaron discusses resin parts.........a few weeks back I was reading about 'how to store super glue', then put the magazine on a shelf, and never even saw Aaron's article.......kripes......where did i put my meds tray...LOLDunce

Russ is the 'invisible hand' guiding this bomb clip build, and come to think of it, I've never actually seen him, have you......Hmm

Yeah Mizer, I don't get it how a tank can sit in a lake for 50 years and not be a pile of rust.

Someone once said bogs lakes have very low oxygen levels, but really, the darn thing looks like with a good cleaning, you could fire it up.

Really beautiful build there, pilot's bucket has nice weathering, and great work

Looking forward to the rest of that build for sure. i can't believe how small that reserve gas tank is, i don't know, but what, 10 gallons, or is it something else?

Gheesh, John Glenn shot down MiGs?

Dom, I know how sensitive you are to caustic type chemicals, so I thought I would also mention that Berny was a firm believer in using vinegar to clean resin parts.  It is what I use and so far seems to do the job.

Thank you Cliff!  Yes, I believe the RF-101C "Long Bird" is the best looking Voodoo.  The combination of the longer nose with the single seat cockpit give it much better lines.

On the note of building a Gus Grissom F-86, I would be in favor of doing that myself for a couple of reasons.  One, Grissom AFB is located just a few miles away from where I live.  Two, Gus Grissom graduated from Purdue University.
