Cool Tim!

I have started painting the flesh tones on my two figures. I'm trying something a little new, I've always thought my stuff came out too stark but now I'm not even trying to blend things with brush painting and spraying a light mist of flesh over everything with the airbrush to tone things back down.

Well I got Spidey's limbs together but spending alot of time filling the gaps. Coming along though slowly. Thinking about the colours to use on him. i was contemplating on painting him up in the black suit instrad of the red and blue.

Shiv and Gamera, nice to read you're making progress. Hope to see pics soon.

My camera battery is recharging, so no update pics, but I've got Supe's main body parts assembled and puttied, brick wall sections for base assembled but not yet puttied.

On the head I added a bit of volume up top by gluing on a "riser" from a bit of styrene scrap, then puttied it over with Vallejo plastic putty, which I've heard good things about. It seemed to set up very nicely and I roughed in a basic shape I liked, but will give it a while to dry before final shaping and detailing. I've also redone the eyebrows for a less snarly look. (Saving the world shouldn't be stressful, it should be fun.) So far the results look encouraging.

The kit-supplied cape is a little short, so I'm playing with methods to scratchbuild a longer one. First experiment was one cut from card stock and soaked to soften, then shaped over the kit part and left to dry. It's a promising start--I'll harden it a bit with a water/white glue mixture and see how it shapes up.

Have a good weekend one and all.

Greg

Robby required some TLC. The parts were poorly cast and the fit is challenging, but this may take a bit.

Jibber - But they look like they're cleaning up nicely. Good job!

What's the tape for? Test fitting? Or are the legs glued together?

Nice start jibber. Seeing that made me realise I haven't seen that movie in years. I used to watch it all the time when I had it on tape, I really must add that to the DVD collection.

Tim, Robby's bottom was glued together to hold the feet in place. It was a terrible fit aligning up his sides because they were off. I tried to clamp it but tape in these weird contortions seemed to work. I'll know better when I get back to it.

Bish I still think that was the BEST Sci Fi movie next to The Day the Earth Stood Still (original ONLY). The music score was actually done on some very innovative synths, and that was the 50's.

As a huge Star Wars fan , I would be reluctant to say the best, but those two were certainly the best of the early Sci Fi movies. I have both versions of the Day the Earth Stood still, I do like the remake, though it doesn't beat the original.

I used to watch Forbidden Planet all the time, I just never added it to my collection when I switched. Just after my last post, I went on Amazon and found it on Blue Ray for £6, bargain. It should be here tomorrow.

So thanks for the reminder that I was missing it.

Looks like it is coming along very nicely. I haven't seen that movie since I was in high school and now that I know it is on blue ray I think I need ti go hunting. I thought I would have Spidey put together in a couple of days aswell. Only 15 pieces to him but been have gap issues to fill in. Haven't done any work this week end with it being our thanksgiving up here, but hope to have him ready for paint by next week end.

Jibber: Very cool! I love FP too, if not the best SF film it's within shouting distance of it. I've got to pick up Robbie too one of these days.

Not a whole lot accomplished so far, but I thought I'd post the before/after shot of my ever-so-slightly restyled Superman head:

I found with the eyebrows a little less strange-looking, the trademark Superman forelock didn't bother me as much, so I left it as-is. I gave him a little more neck, since I'm planning on changing the attitude of the head slightly from the kit's version. I primed with [ironic for an alien] Tamiya Flat Earth, figuring that would be a good basis for flesh tones and hair to come.

[The molding still bears an odd resemblance to one of Gerry Anderson's marionette puppets. He looks like he should be flying one of the Thunderbirds.]

Main body parts are quite well sculpted. Torso bits are together, in various stages of puttying and sanding:

For those who haven't seen the old Aurora kit, it has Supe busting through a brick wall, which I will go with unless I can think of something more interesting. The brickwork sections are actually pretty well designed as far as final appearance goes, but each section is molded with front and back, and the seams are a bit...well...random:

I don't honestly recall how big the gaps were in the "old days," but I'm sure 50 or so years of on-and-off production haven't helped the molds any. I guess the good news is that putty and ragged mortar could look pretty much the same. Still, I suspect doing a decent job on those bricks could take longer that the whole body. [But it beats doing 36 identical road wheels, right?]

Still fiddling with ideas for replicating a new cape, but no pictures yet.

Hope everybody's making progress. Up, up and away!

Greg: The new head is a 1000% improvement! He does look sorta like one of Anderson's puppets yeah  though!

Greg, nice job on the head re-sculpt - looks you achieved a good transition with the height addition.  I just thought of another idea on how to tackle the eyebrows.  Draw the basic shapes in with surfacer, and while it is still wet, use the sharp edge of an exacto blade to create some fine lines.

I built this kit some thirty years ago, (along with the Robin kit where he is pulling a wall switch in a chemical lab setting).  Back then I wasn't too concerned with seams, but seeing that wall section sure brings back memories.

regards,

Jack

Bish, just wanted to let you know there is a Boba Fett on EBay currently at about $6.00 USD with two days left. Just type in Screamin Star Wars in the search window and it should pop up.

Stephen, cheers for that. I have just found it and will keep an eye on it.  It will be worth the £20+ postage if I can get it for that price.

Looking forward to seeing Han's come together.

Mitch, that's the next scale down, the one in the US is 1/4th. And that one you posted is the same guys I got my 1/4th darth figure from, which from what I can see is a copy of the screamin kit.

Though at least that 1/6th one does seem to have the right pose in the legs. And it does seem as though its not a copy, but as I already have one in 1/4th, I think I would like to stick to that scale.

Wanted to drop a line to show how far I've got and the colour I'm going for on my Iron Man. I must say I like it, its the Alclad 2 Candy red but it needs a couple of coats before it can look good. Sorry about the quality of the picture but all I had at the time was my phone.

I like that colour. I have used Alclad's NMF colours, but never there other's, not much call for that sort of red on military aircraft. Look forward to seeing some more.

I know I've been quiet but I am trying to get the M1A1 Abrams done for the build I am part of for the presentation to the Ft Stewart Museum for the "Thunder Run" into Bahgdad in '03.   I have been lurking and love what's been done so far. P Mitch LOVE that red.  I may actually get a start going on the "Creature" soon.  Been kicking around ideas of how to replace the bumps in the skin that will be lost at the joins for the body.  Build-wise I think this will be fairly quick but will be "paint intensive."

Looks pretty close to me Phil, plus that's a very eye-catching colour- if you show him it should really call attention his way.

Alright, Here is the box shot (keep it clean people) and parts. Will clean up and prep for primer this weekend.

Stephen - Nice! That sculpt on Han's face is a dead ringer for Harrison Ford. Can't wait to see what you do with it.

Hey guys, I was out last Friday with an emergency at home. I'm back into the office today and will try to catch up on everything. I did, however, put two kits together with my five-year-old son Saturday morning. I'm writing a review for the mag about them. I don't want to give anything away, but, I really do think I've got a modeler on my hands.

OK, off to edit video and shoot our first vlog, FINALLY!

Phil - Looking good!

Marc - No rush. Make sure the Abrams is up to snuff, then jump in.

Tim
