Primer on, ready for color next....

I still have no idea how to mask off the extremely small sections of the canopy on this model.

Theuns, that really looks nice.  It appears the the construction goes well.  As for the canopy, I have two of these, but haven't looked closely at them--not the canopy anyway, so I didn't know how small the frame and clear sections might be.

How do you normally handle masking the canopy?

Usually, I use thin strips of masking tape to outline the windows, then fill in the center with liquid MicroMask.  I'll have to check the kits I have, and see if this will or won't work.  If not, I'll be in the same situation when I get around to them.

I usually cut tamiya tape, but some panels on the windshield are only a few square mm's . I might try to mask it, failing that I will mask the whole thing and attempt to brush piant the frame.

Keep us posted on this, Theuns.  I don't do brush painting very well, so I hope it doesn't come down to that!

Checkmate I was wondering if I could switch by choice from a German Panzer 1 to the Hobby Boss BR86 locomotive in 1/72. The BR86 was used all through the war and actually began production in the early 30's until they were finally retired in Poland in the 60's but they were heavily used during the beginning stages of WWII and I think falls in the GB's theme. Thanks, Terry

Fine with me, Terry.  I'll update the front page to reflect this.

Looks like this will be an "involved" build with all the plumbing, rods, wheels, etc, etc.

It will make an out-of-the-ordinary addition to the build.

Theuns, the Hurry is looking really nice.

Terry, now that's will be something different. I don't think I have seen a train in any GB before.

Your building a locomotive Terry? AWESOME!

Steve

Building a kit from your stash is like cutting a head off a Hydra, two more take it's place.

Thanks, this is a really nice kit by Hobby Boss and for a rail kit, quite cheap. I think they look great on the shelf too.

Checkmate,

While I'm waiting for other GB's to start, I'm bored and want to start on something else. I have a 1/72 Hasegawa He111 H-2 Kampfgeschwader 55 "Greif" (KG 55) (Battle Wing 55),1940 I am going to build as a second for the Ground Attack GB.

Do you mind if I add this subject as a second build for your GB?

Welcome back!  I will update the front page,Steve, and add the Heinkel.  I have two similar kits I haven't opened yet:  an He-111P and -111P/H from Hasegawa,   I''d like to see how the kit goes together.

Looking forward to that He 111 Steve. I also have their P kit in the stash so will be watching this. I have been considering getting the kit you have. I did build their He 111Z kit last year, a really nice build. The only issue for me was the lack on any interior in the rear, so I turned to scratchbuilding it.

Terry, nice start. Really keen to see how these trains kits go together.

Always nice to do something different. I have thought about doing a train type scene, was thinking of a German tank loading onto a flat wagon, would be nice to get an engine in the scene as well.

I've always thought the scene from Kelly's Heroes when Oddball attacks the train yard would be a cool diorama to build.

Its going ok for now, the problem is when I fit the boiler to the frame. All the little flanges that are on the frame has a spot and they all have to align up right. Another thing was lining up the wheels to the rails. In 1/72 the plastic is small and thin and I'm seeing some warpage as I go along.

After I started this Locomotive I had to pull out an old WWII movie and so I chose Von Ryans Express. There were some very good train scenes, really enjoyed it again for probable the 10th time.

Thanks Bish and Checkmateking!

Well me and my wife counted, that because population of Finland was then less than four million and about 600 000 had to go to fight every family had very close contact to war. Also because of shape and size of this country, the longest distance to battlefront was about 500 kilometers. And not to forgot air raids wich brought war to your yard.

But there´s one group what we forgot too often. Voluntary women. Red cross etc. And the biggest in Finland with about 242 000 members: Lotta Svärd organization. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lotta_Sv%C3%A4rd  They run food supply, medical care (human and animal), fund collecting, office, communication, accessory supply, air surveillance, searchlites etc. At homefront and at combat zone. By doing that, they released about 25 000 men (some sources says 100 000) from secondary tasks to fight.

Fe. during Winter War they baked over 100 000 kg of bread/day.

Not all women had possibility to join voluntary groups. They had to look after lifestock, estate and what most important, offsprings while men were at war. All glory from that to them!

I think this was enough of my shameless awkward transition.

I found this from my local model supplier:

Finnish voluntary Lotta Svärd-organisation member. Well it´s bit mixture of winter and summer/indoor outfit, but I think I can correct that. Although army didn´t have common uniform from the start Lotta-organization had. Only winter time their carrick was either their own or old military model.

Details looks very crisp and nice. And just few minor corrections. Collar is bit too small. They didn´t wear armband on the carrick sleeve. Some times only patch. Buttons looks bit odd, but easy to fix. Also straps of the rucksack and bags didn´t go under the epaulets.  Rucksack was only to carry personal stuff and not part of the uniform like "battle belt".

I think that coffeepot is from some other set. Probably from Easter hex. Atleast that cat tail, which comes out from it tells me so. And that shape of the pot doesn´t match to pots that era in Finland. I replace it with something.

Arm bands looks good. I think I can use part of those as patch.
