Second Annual USAF Vietnam Group Build
Posted by Son Of Medicine Man on Wednesday, August 6, 2014 8:41 PM

Greetings!

Welcome to the Second Annual USAF Vietnam Group Build!

The “Official” start will be August 7th, to coincide with the infamous “Gulf of Tonkin Resolution” of August 7, 1964.  The build will end on August 6th, 2015 at which time we will carry over to the “Third Annual USAF Vietnam Group Build”.

The rules of this build are pretty simple:

  1. You MUST participate, and post pictures to show your work in progress.
  2. Crossovers are allowed (participating in other builds with the same project).
  3. You may enter partially started projects as long as they are less than 50% completed.
  4. You may enter more than one project.
  5. The aircraft must be on the list (at the bottom of this post).  If you think that you have an aircraft that should be on the list, please let me know!  (REMEMBER, this is USAF only.)
  6. And the most important rule, HAVE FUN!

To join, simply post the kit you are going to build (including the scale), note whether you are converting it to a different version and any aftermarket or scratch building that will be added.

All finished builds will be entered on the first page of the build.

Here is the badge, feel free to pick one up if you are participating.  You do not have to wait until you have completed your build.

Medium Sized Group Build Badge

 Small sized group build badge

Hey Ken,

Been busy tearing down my Troybuilt mower the last several days.  Looks like a cracked engine block.  Will try to use JB Weld to repair the crack.  Lots of success stories on the internet about it.....we'll see!  Looks like your F-4E will be quite an involved project after you knock out the Black Bird!!!

Hi Dave,

So do you need to tear the entire engine apart to use the JB Weld?  If so, that will be quite a job!  I wish you the best of luck.

I actually have quite a bit done on the F-4E project already.  It is to the point of gluing the fuselage halves together.  I will just have to remember where I left off at when I get back to it!  Big Smile

Strange enough, most of the engine is in good shape; so I just ground down the rough edges on the bottom of using my Dremel tool (not the preferred use!), cleaned it up with acetone, and then added the JB Weld. Will start rebuilding tomorrow afternoon....this is the first time I've totally torn down my lawn mower; hopefully I'll get it back together without too many "extra parts' left over!!!

MM,

I really don't know. It's an 1981 Monogram kit I acquired recently and it doesn't say. I don't know the subtleties of the Hun to tell the different versions.

Maybe someone can tell me what to look for so I can tell which model it is.

Doing some research, it looks like a "D" model.

Hi Modelcrazy,

Yes, I concur with you.  It does look like a "D" model.  Also while doing some research myself I found this page that has some suggestions on how to build this kit:

Thanks SOMM for the link.

Wow, those guys really get technical. I'll do the best I can, and be happy to get the finish right.

I'll be starting the Hun as soon as I finish my Mi 24 Hind.

Hi Steve,

Yes, that website can be very critical.  But there are some good modelers there that can come up with some great tips.

We will be looking forward to seeing you start on your Hun!

Ken,

I've run into problems with my F100. I seem to be missing the clear plastic tree, so I need to find another Hun.

Ken,

I'm trying to get the needed parts for the Hun, but it's not looking good for a 43 year old kit.

So, if it's all the same to you, I'll switch to the 1/48 Monogram F100C (a 36yo kit). Hopefully it's all there.

I haven't checked squadron yet. that's a good idea. I'll do that if Monogram doesn't have it.

Thanks

Yeah, I'd hate to see you miss out on the chance to build this great kit.  I've built a couple of them and you can't beat them for the price and detail....now, if I could only get that natural metal finish down!!!Tongue Tied

I'm checking squadron now.

I received an email from Revell today.

" Our apologies, but due to the age of the kit, these parts are no longer available from Revell"

That's OK I thought. I just ordered the canopy for the Monogram kit through Squadron.

Thanks for the tip Dave. I would never guessed someone made an AM of the canopy.

Otherwise I would be looking at the kit like a little kid missing a very important Lego piece.

Sign me up with a crossover Monogram 1/48 F-100D Super Sabre. Maybe I can finally get moving on it. Work and hobbies don't mix.
