Scott,

Welcome aboard. I saw your post last night and just couldn't get back to you. I'll put you down with the Lilly. That should be a sweet build. One of my fav bombers along with the Lancaster and He-111.
I didn't even think about decals for the Lilly. Have you seen the movie with Gregory Peck? Great movie. When I attended Leadership school while in the Coast Guard we watched it and broke it down for its leadership lessons.

Hi Steve and GB members.

I have been watching 12 O Clock High episodes on YouTube and someone close to me noticed, and also noticed the name of the lead plane in the series, and got me the Acedemy B17F with the Picadilly Lilly decal set for Christmas. They didn't know the real Picadilly Lilly was in no way close to the one depicted in the series, but I'm not going to complain nor judge, but be grateful for the wonderful gift.  So, I have a B17 looking for a Group Build.  I'm pretty jazzed because I always wanted to build an F model.

The 'Double Eagle' build is nearing completion, pics to come this afternoon hopefully. I've been dealing with the failure of the hard drive on by PC.

Finally got the decalling started on the KC-135. Have had a few issues when I did not pay attention to the colour demarcations for the white on the anti-glare panel and on the engines which i will have to sort out. The kit decals also had a blueish glue on them which shows up under some of the decals. I cleaned it off best I could when I noticed this. and with some of its shelf mates

Hi modelcrazy- Yes, this kit was ORIGINALLY boxed as the Enola Gay and BocKsCar, you know, when sex was safe, women were straight, and hot rods were dangerous. Sometime in (I think) the 90's they went all "P.C." and redid the box art, and changed the decals. Oddly, the sprues CLEARLY still had the "little boy" and "fat man" atomic bombs, and the extra fuel tanks, but zero mention of any of the 3 different parts in the instructions. I had to do some digging to see how the tanks were mounted. (in the rear bomb bay).

Ye, i figures as the GB runs until June it would not be a problem. I was hoping to get it done by Thurs so i could start the new year off afreash. But as long as its done by the end of Feb for the club night that month i will be happy.

Steve, i am going to put the osprey on hold for a bit. The decals that go on top are a real pain. They are stripes indicating no step areas. They are rather large and very fragile. The two on top of the fuselage have broken up a bit but i can fill those in with a pencil. But one of the wing ones disintegrated completly. I was going to just leave it. But one of the guys on Brit modeller has some spare and is going to send them. Seeing as i have to wait for some figures anyway, i am going to get the last few decals on then put it away and finish it off once i get those bits i need. It won't take much, only a couple of days work. So don't think i have forgotten about this when i start on my 1946Gb build.

Rudy,
I thought Monogram produced the Enola Gay and Bockscar. I really haven’t thought much about it for years. I built Thumper in the 70's and thought Enola Gay and Bockscar were options at that time.
That's a bummer you having such a time finding decals. It really gives me the hives to look for and purchase decals online, they cost way more that I'm comfortable paying. But when I get them I'm typically really happy with the result.

Thnaks Ruby. The decals are nearly done and as there will be zero weathering, i should be finishein a couple of days. But the dio will have to wait until Feb as i have realised i have used up my stash of modern US aircrew.

Your Osprey looks Great Bish, cant wait to see it finished. I had a hell of a time finding decals for my B-29 "Enola gay" project, as mine was the newer "politically correct" Revell version. (although I swear the box art decals are "cream of the crop" and "in the pink: or some other nice good foul stuff like that lol) I went through five pages of Google searching, Jbot decals is the first or second one to pop up, I put the decals "in the cart" and went to checkout, and then a message pops up "I am overwhelmed at the moment check back later". Not sure if it is just "overwhelmed" for the holidays, or what the status of that site is, you guys will probably know better than I would. I eventually ordered a set of 1:48 Enola Gay decals from "CanMilAir.com, a Canadian website. But they cost me like $28 plus shipping, which I thought was pretty expensive for such a small sheet of decals, there are very few on the EG. So I am putzing around with my other projects while I wait for decals. I did get an update (on CHRISTMAS!!!) that they were ready to ship, a very fast turnaround for the holiday season I thought. I will keep you posted on quality. -Rudy

Jack,
I'm happy to see your build load lighten up enough to start the Boeing Build. The P-26 is such a cool little bird. I built the Academy 1/48 way back at the first of the year (or was it last year?) and it was a tough little build. The exhaust stacks and engine really gave me the fits. That PE set really looks great and the P-26 with its open cockpit really lends itself to some great detailing. I'm excited to see what you do with your little treasure.

Steve

Bish,
realizing which thread I'm on here, I received my HpH Merlin engine very quickly after ordering. Their customer service is very good. I will probably start a separate build log for it so you and others not following the Mustang Build can see it.

Great looking finished pieces thus far, and it's nice to see those airliners.

I'm almost caught up with current year GB's, so should be starting here soon.  I see there is already a Peashooter in the gallery, (and a very fine looking one at that).  Hope to join with mine, but with a different 'what if' approach concerning the markings.

This one is also 72nd scale from AZmodel.  The kit actually has a resin engine, but will be replacing it with another with better quality.  Also have a PE update, mostly concerned with the pit.

regards,

Jack

Thanks Steve. Ye, its light ghost grey underneath and up the sides under the wrongs and dark ghost grey along the rest of the sides. It certain light you can see the contrast better, but I am not really used to these US colours so not sure what results I should be getting. I am liking it a lot though.

That's looking awesome Bish. Are you painting it light and dark Ghost Grey? Those coloUrs are very similar.
Merry Christmas my friend.

Its been a while since i updated. But i had to put the osprey aside to finish the Stormtrooper and then its taken me since last Fri to get this painted. But i am finally there.

This is how she looked after construction was done, i am leaving the engines of until the end.

Then it was into the paiunt booth. The demarcation between the light and dark gull grey is not as stark as it should be. It hardly shows up at all in the photo's and you can only just see it in the flesh. And for some reason, it does show more on the engines than on the fuselage.

I also noticed an error i had made during construction. The 2 antenna on the rear capped with a disk, this aircraft should only have one. The instructions do point this out and the pics of the real aircraft confirm it, so i had to remove one an di have to touch that up. And i have mad a start on the detailed painting beginging with the wing leading edge.

Great finish BK, museum quality build Yes, you really went through the paces with this one. Great perseverance and finish. I'm not sure I would have had the patience to finish her.

Thank you for joining in on our little build, and am looking forward to working with you on the Floats and Boats build.

Cody will get you on the wall just as soon as he can.

Well folks, all the bits and bobs are done. I am calling this one complete.

Some notes on special things I did for this kit.

I used my Micormark punch set to punch out the belly lights using aluminum tape which I painted over with red, yellow and green. I sized them and placed them as best I could because images of these lights are scarce. They simply stick with their own adhesive back and the chrome underneath makes them really pop. I used the same technique for the rear mounted bombing run lights.

I replaced the kit belly antenna mounts with aluminum rod and fishing line marked black with a magic marker. The kit parts kept getting bent and finally broken, these are way stronger and look the part.

I also added a secure point to the right antenna wire on the tail, as this one is longer and I believe needed some more support. I think it really makes the antenna look all the better also.

The exhaust stains were done using my Badger Sotar 20/20 and a mix of Tamiya smoke with a dab of flat black added.

The exhaust system was painted Mr Color Burnt iron and then rubbed with Tamiya orange rust pastels and then sprayed with Tamiya smoke to layer it up. I think it came out nice.

The engine cowlings were painted with Tamiya white primer and Tamiya white and flat coated with MM flat clear. I then rubbed in yellow, brown, and dark grey pastels to dirty them up a bit and sealed that in with artists fixative.

The wing that was replaced recieved a coat of Tamiya semi gloss black and Alclad Polished Aluminum over that. I then sprayed a heavy coat of hair spray over that and painted the OD from Tamiya. Once this was dry I used tape to easily lift paint in the areas I wanted to and left it in others. I did the same technique under the wing on the NG. I then used pastels to fade that colors similar to the rear plane in the photo below.

I used a 12000 grit polish pad to rub off the paint on the squadron stripe on the right wing. That went ok, but I admit not as well as I would have liked and it was quite difficulit to do.

I also dulled the surface of all the decals using artists fixative, not flat clear. It is eaier to apply under very low pressure and dries instantly. The rest of the Alclad is not coated with any sealer at all.

The nose art decals are from Kits World and they only include the key pieces; the regular markings will need to be used from kit decals.

Overall, this is a nice kit to build. No real problems, but plenty of room for improvments and there are some inaccuracies here and there. The only thing that seems harder about building this kit is the size. It just takes 5-6 times the work because there is so much realistate.

I hope you guys enjoyed this one. I did, except for my Alclad meltdown. Censored But, I am over it and I overcame the problem and learned a valuable lesson. Big Smile

Enjoy the pics.

PS, this bird is supposed to have a Cheyenne Tail Turret. I didn't have one so I went with kit parts.

Rudy, WOW, that think is bg. I hope you tested that rope before hanghing that there. You would not want that nose diving into the concete.

Sorry for the lack of updates. I put the Osprey to one side while i finished off my Stormtrooper. But i am now back at it and got some pics last night and the primer on tonight. So will have an update soon.
