Tony - with that many clamps, I don't think that thing will ever come apart. Were there warping issues, or just being on the safe side?

Can't wait to see some paint on that bird!

Just a quick update on the 1/72 190. Was able to get the main paint down and some mottling on the tail.

Unfortuantely the decals that came with this kit (bought at a show) are destroyed so I need to come up with another option. I can steal some decals from a left over eduard sheet but will still be missing all the German crosses. I hate to spend more on the decals then I did on the kit so I may try to mask and paint them but we'll see.

Keep up the great work everyone!!

Tony thats comeing along great ...i know what you mean about 1/72 should look like 1/48 .....but i think 1/32 should be 1/24 ha ha . well just got back to the hobby hanger ..( the bedroom that i have the bench and such) anyhoo after i got back a verey cold stint up north ...tie changeout ..ive finely put the body together on the 190-D. did the black baseing ..now mixing up some RLM 78 for marbeling . then ill mix up RLM81 and RLM83 from tamiya arcyl, paint ....on a other note just wanted to pass on some usefull info on thinning model master,s arcyl paint ..i found that vallejo airbrush thinner works great add one or two drops of there airbrush flow improver and wallaaa. will be useing this on the FW190 revell ..im thinking of a early A-5 or A-8 .

to everyone else great work !!!!  guys Toast

Thanks guys. Every time I build a 109 in 1/72, I think that it really should be in 1/48. Anyway, here's yesterday.s progress. I opened out the spent shell ejection chutes in the wings, as they were molded very shallow. I also cut off the wing cannon, these will be replaced with needles. I added P/E inserts into the wheel wells and radiators from the Eduard set, then joined up the wings and fuselage.

It's interesting to notice that Academy bothered to do a fairly detailed cockpit, but the only detail in the wheel wells is an ejector pin mark !

Cheers

Tony

Lol no kidding! With a pilot jammed in there you can't see anything but the IP.

Here's my start on the Academy 1/72 109E. I'm building it as an E-3. I've corrected the shape of the rudder pedals and added straps, added harnesses, used the Eduard IP and a few other bits. Trouble is, once you've closed up the fuselage, you just cant see it. Haha !

Cheers

It's weird they way we get different results. I've never been happy with airbrushed future, always seems to be pebbly, but I brush paint it with no issues, usually with a soft, wide flat brush. Your findings with A-Model are in line with mine, they're quite a lot of work, but they have good subjects. I've made a start on my first 109 for this GB, the Academy 1/72 109E with an Eduard etched detail set that I didn't know I had. Photos tomorrow. Cheers Tony

Same here with the pebbly finish when airbrushed but smooth when I hand brush it.

Just a thought...........

Do you have a dedicated handbrush for applying Future? Maybe the handbrush you use got contaminated from another product? I know that Flory Washes will go bad if they get contaminated so a dedicated brush for it is a must.

I do have a dedicated Future brush. It is stored seperately from al my ther brushes, and has never been used in anything but Future.

That is very odd. I always handbrush Fututre and get a clear glossy finish. The only time Future clouded up on me is when I applied decals and Solvaset a few hours after brushing it. Decal setting solutions will react with Future if applied before it cures, usually after 48 hours or so.

I wonder what caused the reaction with Future?

I have no idea. I used the exact same mixture in the airbrush as I had in the paintbrush. At first I thought it may have had something to do with the one or two drops of Windex I add, but I've used that mix for two years with no problems. The paint had been dry for a week.

What's extremely strange, I have no problem handbrushing smaller areas, such as cockpits. No problems at all, same mixture. I have no idea why it happened, but I guess I'll stick to what I know hasn't almost ruined a model from here on out.

I had a little bit of a problem with the Future on the G10- I made the mistake of trying to hand brush it, and after letting it dry it went VERY foggy. Luckily, an airbrushed second coat helped, and I think my gloss coat over the decals will help some more. Lesson learned- I will only ever spray Future.

Nicely done despite the kit issues. I wish somebody would create a nice 1/48 scale version of this great looking float plane.

Nice work onboth of those waggish. How you finding that A-Model kit.

It's pretty terrible. Nothing fit's, no locator pins, no details, panel lines aren't straight or a consistent depth, and the only decal's that I could use from the decal sheet was what you see here. It's a neat subject, but if I ever want to do another one, It'll be a conversion from basically anything else.

After weeks kept away from my bench, I was able to get considerable work done on both of my submissions. I got them both painted and decaled. Now, they each just need weathering, flat coat, and some final construction. I've also been considering getting a Luftwaffe fighter pilot and throwing together a little base for the G10, since I don't typically do 1/48th scale stuff.

Anyway, here they are:

Bish, Hunter, thank you. I kept it basic. A little chromatic shading, pin wash, and some dry brushing for some highlights. The pics don't do it justice. I only did some minor weathering on the IP because once the pilot is seated you won't see much past him. I learned that with my P-40 after I weathered the pit and the pilot takes up most of the space.

Ive already begun modifications on the 109 pilot. His head was removed and I added a neck. Now I need to modify his arms a bit for the pose I want to capture. Can't just have him staring trance-like forward. Not very interesting lol.

Thanks guys! Bish, I never seem to be able to get preshading to look right either. That's why I'm hoping I can make this kind of technique work. If I try it again I think I'd lay a base layer of the color down, maybe do some marbling and then this panel line wash/streaking. Then go over it with a highly thinned coat of base color. Sounds like a lot of steps but it might be worth it if I can get a more layered/subtle look to the weathering.

Mike - Outstanding start as always...I'm sure the pilot is going to be another masterpiece for you.

Andy - Very cool process, and it looks great. Maybe 20 kits from now I will give it a try.

Steve & Bish - Thank you for the honest input...I have to agree with with you. After reading your suggestion I went back and looked at the pictures, and it didn't look right at all with that blue...a darker blue/black would definitely look better. Thank you both for pointing that at. I need the constructive criticism, it will only benefit me. Wink

Thanks, Rooster. :)

That's a technique I've not seen before on your 190. I may have to try that out for myself.

Hunter, I like where you are going with the base!

Mike, very nice start on the cockpit!

Quick update for me as well. I've finished up construction and started paint. I tried something new on this one. I saw this technique done on Youtube and wanted to give it a try. It bascially involves doing a panel line wash and some streaking before doing the paint on the bottom side. Here's the wash after a coat of primer to check for seams...

And with the streaking done...

Here it is with the color laid down. It's hard to tell with the pictures but you can see some streaking showing through with the naked eye. It's another way to break up the color and create some variation...

Should be moving on to the topside camo soon!

Started work on my 109. Of course the pit was up first.

The pilot is going to take a lot of work though.

Not my best camera work. Sorry about that.

Yeah I'd go a little darker on the water otherwise I'd say she's about 10 to 15 thousand feet so the flat sea would be approate. The clouds look great.
