Looks cool G, please keep us informed. I'm enjoying following this.

Though I keep misreading Pejite as Petite- I keep thinking maybe it's a smaller version of the regular Brig.

Thanks Gamera!  I kicked off cutting plastic last night:

I think a sheet of 0.020" got into my packet of 0.030".  Tongue Tied  I was wondering why the bottom plate was so easy to form.  Anyway, too late, gonna keep going!  Stick out tongue  I'll just use 0.020" to plate the bottom when it comes to detailing.  I now have to make sure I can cut those "happy" windows with the arched tops in a neat, evenly spaced manner.

I made up a skin template by laying down masking tape over the fuselage, tracing all the bulkheads with a pen, then laying the tape over a sheet of paper and cutting out the image.

My plan is to skin the fuselage with a single piece of sheet plastic to get a nice smooth under surface to apply the exterior plating.

The next task is to decide on the best way to make the wings, which are three times longer than the fuselage!

I'm like a dog watching squirrels, so I have been also working on the Pejite Gunship.  The best plan view I could find was this fuzzy pic that is reminiscent of those old spy photos of Soviet-era aircraft lifted from grainy "cine" films.

But someone from the internet has stepped in and provided me with many screen shots - a big shout out to Dasnewten!

No problemo.

Oh look - SQUIRREL!!!

I made a paper mock-up of the Pejite Gunship in 1/72 to see what the overall look would be like.  It still needs work, but is getting there.  Okay, I need to do my taxes first, then back to the Brig!

I sprayed the red on the frog car, frog truck, frog trike, whatever the darn thing is.

Grumble, I masked the thing off like the mummy and STILL I got overspray. How it got under the mask boogles my mind. Well, I'll take a brush and try painting over it on the white top. Guess I was lucky it's only the window supports so I shoudn't be too hard to paint over.

I'll let her dry a week or two and then try to polish the red paint.

Coming along well, Gamera!

Mongoose, that's cool! Glad they like the GB concept! Maybe we'll do a round 2 or something. Good work on your project, too! I don't have much hands-on experience making models of bodies of water unless you count puddles...Big Smile Guess I'll get some, though, to make the pond for my current diorama project!

My meager progress-- the figures are assembled!

And for my admin/roster-editing duties, what is your SR-71 model kit, Mongoose? And what scale is your build set to be, Real G?

John,

The Brig is 1/250 scale.  I started planking the hull this morning, but the boys are over and have taken over the build table for now.

Those figures are boss!

Update:  I got the 1-piece skin onto to hull after everyone left.  It looks OK so far.  Pics on Monday.  I think I'll work on the fins next.  OMG scratchbuilding makes so much dust.

Ive got Monogram's 1/72 scale...and although it's irrelevant except maybe to $ value it's the "Call To Glory" version based on some TV show i oddly never watched haha

The Brig's hull is now covered with a 0.030" one-piece wraparound sheet.

I set some tubing into the rear to properly set the angles for the center fin support.  A paper mock-up fin has been slipped in place for a position/proportion check.  It kinda looks like a boxfish, doesn't it?

The plastic fins have been started.  I need to make sawcuts in them to provide a guide to drilling out matching locator holes for the supports.  I'd better break out the fresh sandpaper...

Thanks Gamera!  I hope the paint touch up goes well.

I laminated the fins last night.

Now I'm mulling the construction order for plating the hull, because it makes a difference where the seams fall.

So last night I trialed cutting out those house-like windows into the hull plating:

Approach is everything, so I printed a paper pattern with the round portions of the windows marked with a center crosshair.  This made it relatively easy to line up the punch & die by eye to get reasonably consistent openings.  Then it was a matter of carving away the rectangular bottom portions of the windows using a fresh Xacto blade, guided by a lightly scribed lower sill line.

I need to do the other side now as well as the cockpit window band.

OMG, somone on Starship Modeler Farcebook 3-D printed a Pejite Gunship!

Starship Modeler Public Group | Facebook

The 3-D model looks closer to what I had originally drawn and attempted to build back in the 1980s, with its swept back inner wings.  My new design will feature stylish forward swept inboard wings!

All "happy" windows have been cut - whew!  I was worried that they would be a difficult problem, particularly the bridge windows on the narrow plastic strip, but everything worked out.

I plan on dunking the window strip into near boiling water to set the curve, as I don't want any springback problems.

Next up will be plating the hull, including the front and back areas.  This will involve adding the glass to the windows and pre-painting around their openings to ease masking later on.

Thanks Mongoose!

BTW, some friends asked why the windows are "happy":

It's the shape of the upper arches that made me think of a goofy smiley cartoon face.

Twas a beautiful day in Cincinnati today, nice enough to pour resin in the sun. Leveled up the outdoor table, laid out some giant skewers to form a boundary, covered it all with plastic and voila!

Lots of blue as opposed to red. Couldn’t do both without it turning purple, which would be a terrible waste of $50 in resin haha. I’m going to do the roilling wave crests in red and do some airbrushing to get the red on there the way i want it…i hope :-)

Looks cool, guys!

Real G, you're modernizing the design--I like it! Good work on all those windows!

Mongoose, that start on the water is looking impressive!

I've sprayed my little R-35 black for part 1 of the pre shade, but ran out of time to add the light color highlights:

But even if I'm not pulling out the airbrush again quite yet, I can still do some figure work:

...and, as promised...a red shirt.
