Thanks Dodgy and Gam.  This is a great bust, I think I will enjoy it as I go along.

Made some progress, not much.  Just a base coat for the skin and a start to the eyes.

Don't be fooled by the shadows and highlights in this picture, that is just my lighting.  I think I will be referencing this picture when I start shading...they don't show up like this in person!

I also gave Fury another watch this weekend for inspiration, unfortunately this took my attention away from the painting.  Oops

Robert: That's a great looking figure- really captures the look of Pitt. Looks like it'll be a joy to paint.

Glamdring

The camo on the astronaut turned out really well!

I cracked the seal on War Daddy this evening, just to get whet my whistle.  I need to lop off the casting gate under his neck, clean up that connection point, then hope to prime tommorow and start painting this weekend.

That's a great looking bust Glamdring, it's just screaming for paint! Looking forward to seeing it come together.

Hi,

Thanks for the feedback and recommendations.  I just ordered the Astronaut decals and am looking through my spares for something that looks good for a unit patch.

It's really starting to come together Pat. As for a unit marking, have you considered using an existing unit patch, as such things don't tend to change much over time, or taking something from the internet and making a decal? (Don't ask me how to do this, but I know others do it). As for the eyes, be careful of showing too much white.

Hi,

Everything is finally coming together.  I have everything glued in place except the helmet visor, and the gun (which I don't intend to glue, it kind of rests in place on the chest control unit thing).  Right now, I mostly need to;

  • Clean up that white "hose connector" behind the rifle site (I'm just waiting for the putty to dry)
  • Work on the face
  • Give some thoughts as to whether I can tint the helmet visor a little darker
  • Maybe try and accent some of the seems and edges a little more
  • And add some markings/decals.

I have recently recieved some eyball decals from eBay and am interested in seeing how they turn out.  And I also found some low vis American Flag markings that are a little small, but should be OK.  I also have some of the exisitng markings from the original kit, and I think that I can steal a "Name" for a name tag frommaybe one of my airplane kits.  Other than that I would like to try and add some rank markings and maybe some sort of Space Force marking and/or unit patch.

If I make the astronaut an officer instead of an enlisted person, the rank markings might not be two hard to do (just a solid, or hollow, bar for a Leuitenant - I think).  But a Space Force logo is probably beyond my capabilities at this time.  I may take a marking from some other kit and put it on the figures shoulder to represent some sort of made up unit patch or something though.

Sure were.  I read that book back in about 1968 when the first ape movie came out.  Until the very end there was no indication that they were, you just had the impression that one of our current capsules had found something that must have been forgotten by some alien ship that had visited earlier.

The book had been written by Pierre Boulle in 1963.  Planet of the Apes was our title and the British called it Monkey Planet.  I checked for this part of the info and found that the book can still be bought on ETSY and probably other places and as a audio book on Amazon.

Cool, never read the novel. I'd heard it had the apes in a modern technical civilization but in the movie building all that was deemed by the studio to be way too expensive.

Here's another idea for that astronaut.  If you ever read the original book "The Planet of the Apes" lke I did back in the late 60s, at the end you find that the story is being read by a space crew in orbit of earth after they find a book drifting near their ship.  After they are done having a good laugh with it the book goes into storage while they wonder how it got into orbit in the first place since they were supposed to be the first space mission, and the story line has got to be rediculus in the first place.  Then the crew prepare to re-enter the atmosphere as they use their feet to grip holds while they put on their helmets.  Care to guess how or why they do that?

Phoenix: Cool! I hadn't even heard about the remastered series. Personally the old CGI still looks okay to me, not great but okay.

Dodgy: I'm currently working on a 23cm/9in figure of the elf maiden Deedlit from the anime 'Record of the Lodoss War'. Is it any issue if I were to post photos of her here?  The Deedlit figure I've already started on and is about 1/3rd done. I'm building her as a Christmas present for an old friend so I had to start early and keep going if I'm going to meet the deadline.

But since Ben has already started his maybe I can just post the figure as motivation for when the GB starts in earnest next week? I'm still building the Sadako figure for this GB- Deedlit would be just for the heck of it.

So much has happened!  I hadn't realized I didn't have this thread subscribed and just thought it was quiet. Tongue Tied

I've rectified that oversight!

Gamera, glad to know I'm not the only one with an on air VHS recording of the Babylon 5 pilot and just like everyone else, the complete series on DVD.  One of my all time favorite Sci-Fi TV series!   Apparently they remastered the series but I've only seen it available as a digital purchase. Sad  It would be interesting to see how the quality differs.

Pat, your astronaut is coming out amazing.  Like where you're taking it!

Ben, your astronaut is looking fantastic.

ou could always give that austronaut There's decals for various types and sizes of eyes.  I think they are put out by Archer.  You could always give that austgronaut some type of animal or weird eyes using their decals.

Hi,

Thanks.  I will look into that.

I'll join.  Never attempted a figure before, but I've got the Bandai 1/12 Mandalorian in my stash.  Good reason to give it a go.

Hi,

I added some small spots to the camouflage and then gave it a wash or two.  I started with a Velleho Grey Wash but it was kind of light, so I added a second coat using Testers Black Enamal Wash.  In general the Testers stuff seems to always come out a little dark on me and I often let it sit for a minute before rubbing some of it off.  If it is still too dark I will sometimes brush over it with enamal thineer and rub it down again.  Unfortunately, in a few places, the combination of the wash, thinner and rubbing ended up rubbing off my base acrylic paint, so I will have to go back over the figure again and do a few touch ups, but the figure below shows how he looks right now.

Hi,

I am progressing slowly, but making some progress.  Here is my attempts at the base camoflage.  I still need to add the black and white spots, and then maybe give it an overall black or gray wash to darken it a little and help pick out some of the folds, creases and seams.

I;ve also rotated his hands about 90 degrees since he will not be reaching for a ladder like in the parent kit.

Regards

Babylon 5....I have the entire series and all the movies on disc.  Now all I have to do is get a disc player since my two are out of commission.

Yeah, it was my all time favorite TV series. I need to blow the dust off my DVDs and watch them again soon.

There's supposed to be a remake coming up but the rumors have all the hallmarks that this will be a massive disastor. I hope the thing is canceled...

Hope you get a DVD player soon, I couldn't do without mine. I've been on a horror movie binge before Halloween.

Thanks Dodgy!

I will say the original movie is well worth watching. The two sequels and the pre-sequel are best avoided. They have a few good scenes but not many. I found them pretty much a waste of time.

There's a Hollywood remake too though I've not seen it. I've heard it's good though.

G: Just pulling your leg a little there. I had an old VCS tape lying around so I dug it out and wrote 'SADAKO' on it. I don't think there's anything cursed on there just a twenty year old copy of the Babylon 5 TV movie 'Thirdspace' taped off TV that's probably almost unwatchable at this point.

Great thought on the astronaut kit ikar01! My weird mind jumped straight to zombie moon monsters!

So what happens if you only watch part of it?

If I had that austronaut kit I would end up leaving the eyes the way they are and doing something a little stranger to it.  The eyes reming me of that old British move "The Earth DIes Screaming".

Yeah if the VCR eats the tape- do you end up half-dead- aka badly hurt?

I like your idea with the astronaut- that's pretty creepy!

The VCR tape has  "Sadako" wtitten on it.  Oh wait, if you watch it, you die in a week.  Indifferent

Really!?! I just need to get someone else to watch the copy I made though...... Devil
