Ernie, that is gonna be an incredible camo pattern! I can't wait to see it when it is done!

Meanwhile, I got busy with my fifth addition to this Group Build. This is a French built Soumua tank in captured German markings. So far, I was able to built the lower hull and most of the roadwheels:

Then I built then turret (quite simple assembly actually!)

Then I cemented all the accessories to the top hull:

Next, I put the last wheels on, a little detail painting, and then mount the tracks on it, and I'll be ready for painting.

Well here is my finished camo. I just took the last three pictures in poor lighting conditions. It is giving me a goldish tan to them. If you know how to correct the lighting please let me know, thank you in advance. Next will be the canopy. I need to to Walmart and get me some fishing weights for the nose. I have yet to get my Japanese decals for it.

I just thought that I would throw in something that might be of interest. I was doing some scientific experimenting a few days ago , sometimes referred to as just "screwing around", with an old Mig-21PF Fishbed D. I found some Israeli decals and a very evil, sarcastic idea formed in my demented mind. This is my idea of a stealth, night fighter the Mossad would probably find interesting.

In one way, you are partially right. Israel did have a MiG 21 in their Air Force which they acquired back in the 60's when an Iraqi defector flew the plane to Israel. This was back when the MiG 21 was still relatively new and unknown, and only recently exported to other countries. Here is a model of it that I'd gotten and built back in the seventies:

After studying the plane, and letting the U.S. check it out and study it as well, they painted the plane in their national colors and used the plane in combat. (I believe the defection had happened just before the 1965 Arab-Israeli War) I had even seen that the Israeli pilot managed to get a few kills using this plane durring that conflict. I had also heard, but couldn't confirm, that it was also brought out and used during the 1973 war when they were in need of a few more planes. I believe that sometime in the 80's, the Israelis either turned the plane over to the U.S. or put it in a museum. I gotta go check my facts some more; I'm going on very old memory here. I remember back in the 70's there was a TV movie made about it that I thoroughly enjoyed despite it's many inaccuracies and 'Hollywood' drama.

Captain Munir Radfa defected from Iraq to Israel's Tel Nof Air Base in a Fishbed C, Mig-21F-12, Black 534 on August 16, 1966. The Israeli's did a thorough evaluation and then gave it to the US. We evaluated it from Jan 23 to April 8, 1968, at Groom Lake, Nevada, under project HAVE DOUGHNUT. USAF gave it serial number 68-0965 for this project and then returned it to Israel. They put it in their museum at Hatzerim. The US and Israel put their respective national insignia on the forward fuselage under the canopy, but nowhere else. The US also put 80965 in black on the tail fin.
Two Syrian pilots, Valid Adham and Radfan Rifai landed their Mig-17s, black 1033 and black 1041, by mistake at Israel's Betset Air Base on August 12, 1968. They became POW's. These Fresco C's were evaluated by the IAF and later the USAF. Another Syrian pilot defected with a Mig 17 to Israel and this was the basis for the Hollywood movie.

Thanks Darwin! I appreciate all the details. This is great to know. I had thought they'd used that MiG 21 in combat, but I can see that I was wrong. Man, now I can get a MiG 17 and make it Israeli too, even if it wasn't used in combat either. Still it would be cool looking!

Oh, I almost forgot.

Here are some pics of my latest progress on my German Soumua:

I got her painted up and ready to clearcoat with Future. I'll get all that done, and probably the decals on her later today.

Well, decals are on it:

You can see the No.11 Exacto blade next to it as a size reference. This is NOT a large tank! Wink [;)]Clown [:o)]

Now I need to wash it, seal it in dullcoat and then drybrush it and I'll be done!

I'll post pics when I complete this guy tomorrow or the next day.

Hey Maddog nice job on that ity bity tank. Lookiing good. I repainted my P-38, I just did not like the how the camo job came out and I am going to redue it. Same colors. I am sure many of you have repainted a model or two that you were unhappy with. Oh well, painting is truely a fun part of building a kit.

Okay, my fifth kit for this Group Build is complete!

Everyone, take a look at my latest German tank, captured from the French:

This will be it for now. I have a few more builds to work on, but I'll be stopping in occasionally to see everyone's progress.

I had to repaint it. There were some on the side of the plane that were not well defined shapes. Around the camo shap there was about 2mm of IJA Green and silver dots.. Its easier for me to say I had to redue it then explain the problem. Anyways looking forward to finishing it.

I wonder if one of those Mig 17's is one that is parked in the static display lot here on base? I'll have to see if there's any serial #'s on the thing. Maybe even ask around. I'll try & post some pics of it soon. - Calvin

Frosty, Rebel, thank you for the greast comments!

Frosty, don't feel like a loser, I think you are one of the biggest winners on these Forums the way you build models! I'm certain your zimmerit will come out fine! One can always see the heart you pour into your models. Can't wait to see Cuckoo in all her glory!

Reb, don't worry about having almost missed it. I kinda got it done so quickly and slipped it in, that most people may not have seen it. I'm looking forward to seeing how yours turns out as well.

I took another extended period of time off from modeling. From time to time I get burned-out from work and I just don't feel like modeling. Then I get a surge of enthusiasim and I don't stop modeling for weeks. Anyways I should have let you all know that I was going to take some time off, anyways I am almost complete with the P-38. All that is left is the decals and the canopy. I will be posting some pics of the finish product by the end of the weekend. Big Smile [:D]
