Count me in too, Steve. I'll probably be doing either a P-40E or N from the 49th FG, or an AVG bird. The decision depends on when the group build starts or (more likely) when I'm able to finish something. I have a couple P-40s in the works now but, because of work and family, my builds progress at a painfully slow pace! Sorry I can't be more specific now, but I'd hate to promise something and not deliver.

Joe,
You should volunteer to use the Museum of Science and Industries new time machine and go back to Dec 7 and take a series of pictures of Lts Taylor & Welch's machines for all of us to use.

HA! Good luck...

Mark, No prob. Just let me know more specifics when you can. The build isn't going to begin for a couple months so there's plenty of time.

Steve, may I please join this one too? I have a revellogram P-40B T\that I would like to do for this. But, be forewarned, I haven't got a digital camera, so pics will be slow coming. At the moment I have about 60+ rolls of film to be developed, plus three or four albums to be scanned and the pics put in my photobucket album. I'll see what I have in the way of P-40s and get them posted here.

I was looking through the Brett Green book "Modeling the P-40.....etc.etc." and noticed that MPM makes a P-40 F/L and SMER makes a "K." Does anyone have any experience with either of these kits? Are they worth baggin'?

BTW, they are both 72nd.

The MPM 1/72 P-40 is a pretty nice kit unless you're a beginner. It's not an easy build. Sorry on the Smer kit, I'm not familiar with that one.

If it's got the name SMER on it, I advise you to run screaming in any direction which will carry you away... far, far away.

Well, they're not THAT bad...

I have 5 x Wartime RAAF pix of the P 40n, if you would like them, just send an email to me and I send them back.

I've got a question regarding Tex Hill's AVG plane. Almost everyone that does his plane does the #48 B model with the tan/green camo or #108 E model with the All olive drab top camo. As I understand it, #48 crashed before it saw any action, and he didn't get 108 until sometime 6 months later. So what airplane did he fly in between? Or do I have my facts wrong? I'm asking cause I have a B, and 2 E's that I would like to turn into all the planes he flew while with the AVG.

Not sure if anyone has ever posted this link, so here it is. Even for 1/32 this guy's got skills!

The build is absolutely awesome. Too bad he had to hide some of the finer points of his construction with paint.Bow [bow]

You're correct; #48 crashed during a landing accident on 9 Dec. '41. However, if I understand correctly, it was repaired and later flown again. Whether it saw any combat later, I don't know. Tex is credited with at least three kills in Robert Layher's #53, also a Tomahawk. Probably his other victories were in 2nd Squadron Tomahawks and E models before getting #108; the pilots were known for flying whatever was available at the moment, even if the plane was not specifically assigned as theirs. Chances are that the records of some of Tex's victories weren't kept as to the specific plane, so it might not be known exactly which plane he was flying for every victory.

This information is from Terrill Clement's Osprey book "AVG Group Colours and Markings," and Tex Hill's biography.

Hope this helps,

Mark

Mark, Thanks for the info, very well researched! I actually have Clements books, but obviously didn't read it as carefullyas you did. How is Tex Hill's book? I've heard there are many factual errors -as memory will do that- but well worth reading nevertheless. I met the gentleman a few years ago, while getting on in age, (he's 90 this year?) still sharp and was very nice ot me and my children. A very impressive man with a very impressive place in history.

Steve-a-reno

I think I will go with the Hasegawa E. Just picked it up at Niagara and it doesn't look too hard. Should have it done in a couple of weeks, in between wedding plans and all. Tongue [:P]

Count me in on this build. I have three different P-40 kits in my stash and would like to build one or two of them. Furthermore the Hasagawa kit is singing its sirens song to me. I'll probably start with the Mauve Kittyhawk III. I guess I better start chasing the aftermarket stuff now!

Steve:
Great site -- I like the way you're making this a lot more than just slamming models down for a badge.

I've got the 1/48 Academy-C & Trumpeter-B and some A/M but I haven't put any thought into just what I might do -- maybe throw everything onto the bench, stir twice, & see what comes out.

I can't do anything with this for a couple months -- bench (& mind) is full -- so put me in the Reserves for a 1/48 P-40B/C and I'll firm up my build later, if that's OK.

Steve, any idea when the start date will be ? I've got a few in the Que, but don't want to get caught too much in the middle of multiple builds.

The duty rosters are up to date, Mark, Roadkill, Lobbie, SteveW and jratz... welcome to the build!

Ratz, that's A-O-K with me. If you wanna add another later, that's cool. If you wanna switch up in the middle of the build, that's okay. We can do whatever you want... we have the power to make it ALL happen... Tongue [:P]

Rick, I haven't come up with a specific date but I think it's going to 'officially' start at the beginning of May and go until... who knows...

Wayne, you're penciled in for a Hasegagme P-40E... and I haven't said congratulations, yet, have I? Well, I ain't gonna, neither... Wink [;)]

I just got the Hasegawa 1/48 "E" and it is so nice, I'm going to push everything else aside and build it! In fact, I'd like to bring it to the IPMS nationals in July.
Is there some time limits on this group build project?

Warhawk, I don't think there is going to be a time limit and I suppose if you want to get started earlier to make the NATS that would be okay. Exceptions can be made, I think, because all that really matters is that some models get built. Just be sure to post some photos...

I wouldnt mind building a plane again, I havent built one since I was a kid. Having just seen Sky Captain Im itching to do a p40 not sure which type etc but having searched a bit , most people in the know think its close to a p40e or a p40f so I I can find either of those Id like to be in on this one. I vaguely remember a kit of John Belushis P40 from the film 1941 that would be pretty cool too but I reckon it would be long gone by now.

The kit from the movie "1941," if I recall correctly, is the old Revell P-40E. It still shows up occasionally on Ebay but, unless you are buying it because you are a John Belushi fan, you'd probably be better served by AMtech's or Hasegawa's P-40E (these are both 1/48 scale). AMtech also puts out a nice P-40F/L with a resin nose, also in 1/48. I've only seen the previews of "Sky Captain," but my guess is that it's a P-40E.

Not to sound like a dullard, but where the heck are all the 1/72nd scale P-40 decals. Nobody seems to carry any! Guess I'll have to seriously comb the vendors at BufCon. Does anyone know where I can score some PTO or CBI US markings in 72nd?

Justen, there are some 72nd decals to be had, but they aren't anywhere near as plentiful as in 48th. I had considered doing general building in 72nd and reserving 'special' projects for 48th and larger, but the lack of decals was the major factor in my ditching that idea.

I think that Errormaster/Beagle Strike may have done 72nd versions of their fairly recent 48th CBI P-40 sheets, but none show on their website.

Alrighty, if you know what subject you'll be building (not kit, but actual subject, ie; 49th FG P-40E) and have not said so in this thread, please do so. I'd like to keep track of what people may be building so that I can try and accommodate them in the reference dept., if they so choose to research their subject.

Please count me in then . I will be doing the Hasegawa p40E with mods to make it Sky Captains h110d plane. Im guessing this will fall under the "what if" category.
This will be my first plane model in 23 years so I will probably be asking all sorts of stupid questions , given that the only planes I have built were airfix pocket money type stuff.

Blackwolf, can you put me in the "reserves" for a 1/48 Mono P-40B? I think I got a AM sheet coming for it. I'm just now getting settled in at NAS Fallon. It does come w/ the AVG markings but I don't know if that sheet is a new issue sheet or 15+ years old. Thanks.

Sorry, it was a -B kit that I had.Tongue [:P] The decal sheet don't look too bad, either. - Calvin

Steve, I'll be doing the 1/48 Hasegawa P-40E as an Aleutians Tiger, 11th FS, 343rd FG.
