I wonder why the dullcoat would reduce the effect. What dull were you using? Did you have a coat of future on the bird before your dull coat? I will definately try some pre-shading on this bird and see if I can't learn a thing or two...lol

I used model master dull. I think the effect depended on the satiny finish of the paint "in the raw." I used future, and that's where the effect probably was first lost. Everything kind of darkens and looks different under a coat of Future, so I guess I just assumed that it would straighen out when I hit it with flat. I was wrong. But it still looked decent.

future definitely deepen colors, and thus subtle faded weathering effects are often lost. Learned that hte hard way.

Well After alot of tooth grinding, four letter words, and crying, It is finally done, and hope to post pics this weekend but if I don't hopefully ill be able to pst next week end. This kit was a beast for me because of all the paint problems I have been having. When I show the pics I dont want any of you to laugh at it. But all in all it was a fun kit. The second time i have built the Monogram P-40B

I have purchased another P-40B and will be getting a resin cockpit for it but will scratch everything else. Still not shure of what the subject will be but it is going to be part of my pacific heros line of models depicting the early days of 1942.

Looks good Joe. Would look great if you had of taken a bit more time with it, but it looks fine none-the-less. Thanks for sharing.Thumbs Up [tup]

I might start working on my P-40N this week. Depends on how my FW-190 that I want to get finished by the end of the week is going. If I don't start this week, it'll definitely be the next week.

Man, two done already... I can't go that fast... Joe what do you mean by the tail is wrong? You talking about the control surfaces?

I'm off to the Falls now to hang with Mike (Butz) at the shop and then for some eats and maybe some modeling. Probably mostly be a bull session, but I may try to paint something while I'm there...

Haven't added anything to the GB page on the site in the last day or so, but I've been adding a few things to other parts of the site, mostly the 'Survivors' section. There's a few pictures of a really cool almost totally original RCAF P-40 with a link to even more shots as well as a few other things.

Check it out at the The Hawk's Nest

I promise to get those 49th FG photos up before the weekend is out...

You guys are making some nice progress! And Joe, you are a building machine! How about another P-40 since we're still early in the build?

I posted some pics of a P-40 I just completed (for the most part) in the plane forum. Couldn't really consider it part of the Group Build because I started it in January! Anyways, I noticed the colors seemed a bit off on some pics (A salmon/pink fuel cap!?[:0]), so I took some more in the sunny outdoors. I'll just post them here.

I tried a few new techniques, and am hoping for any suggestions, either things to do more, better, or different, from you guys! Well, here goes:

Great job Joe! Looks like it was a fun build. There's plenty of time left in this GB, (an infinite amount, actually) why not go for a second?

Mark, love the paint scheme on that Hawk! Is that the AMT kit?

Here's what I accomplished today between yard work, remodeling work in the kitchen, and tending to a fussy baby. Hope y'all like!

Mark, great build. Nice job on the camo & decals. Looks great.

Hannaman, Looking good so far. I've always liked that scheme, but yet to do one.

Heath, I used an oil wash of Burnt Umber for the panel lines, and just thickened it up a bit for the fuel stain that I applied with a fine brush. It actually came out better than I expected. Thanks for the kind words!

Joe, thanks also. I'd love to see another P-40 from you!

Justen, It's the AMtech kit, which is basically the AMT kit that was never released as an "E." Thanks for the nice words. I like what you've done so far! Which plane are you modeling? You actually got more done than I did today, and I had yardwork but no kitchen remodel, and my daugher wasn't fussy! But I have 5 acres, so that's my excuse!

Rick, thanks also for the kind words again! I'm really looking forward to seeing your Group Build.

Justen, coming along nicely!

Kik, I like the new look of your sig... Wink [;)]

Alrighty, I have the 49th FG pages up on the site. There's not much on them at the moment... just two shots of the nose art from 'O'Riley's Daughter' of the 7th FS for thehannaman and three shots of 'Arizona / KIP' of the 9th FS for falcon39. Also, there's one shot of Bob DeHaven's #13 for Mark. I hope to have more up soonly...

http://hawksnest.1hwy.com/In%20Service/USAAF/49thFG/49thFG.html

As you can see, the site is getting a new look, although the header on the 7th FS page is godawful and must gooooooo...

Steve, thanks for the picture of DeHaven's P-40! That's one I haven't seen before. Not often you see so many victory flags on a P-40.

I'm actually getting the chance to start work on the Eduard P-40N. It's been awhile since I've worked on so much PE, and I'm learning all over again. Luckily Eduard supplies some extra handles and knobs because I've lost a few already. One thing I do remember from this build is the wing/fuselage gap I had before, and it's turning out to be a pain to ensure it doesn't happen again. Lots and lots of dry-fitting is going to be involved. One thing's for certain: This is going to be a slow build.

No prob on the picture Mark! I had come across it a couple times in a book and didn't really look at it too closely until last night when I recognized it for what it was. I tried to send you an email twice now and it bounced back... so if you have larger versions of those pictures of 'Star Dust' please send them. If not, no big thang and I'll use what you've posted here.

I've managed to get some more done on the models and on the website but I've slowed down to a crawl on everything in the last 24+ hours. I'm having another bout with kidney stones... fun-freakin'-wow...

Oh, and for those who may have missed the POTD for yesterday...

Finally cleared a few other projects off the bench & started working on the interior. The kit looks great so far ( Hasegawa 1/48 P-40E ). Hope to have the pit painted this weekend.

Well, the battle of the stones seems to be over... for now. (I hope)

I picked up another Hasegawa 48th P-40E today from a pal who's ditching all his 48th props, so now I'm really itchin' to dig into one of 'em.

I wanna get some paint on at least one of the Hawks I've got going before I start a third though. Am having a bit of a time getting the seams from AMT kit's greenhouse insert to go away and that's the main sticking point with that particular project at the moment.

Think I've said this before... I like the AMT kit more and more as I work on it. 'Tis still not up to par in some areas but it's not the dog I once thought it might be. However, the opposite can be said for the Mauve kit. There's a few problems that have manifested themselves since I started work on the kit and some are major annoyances. Oh well, I'm a modeler... I can deal with it... Wink [;)]

My buddy Mike is coming down tomorrow and we'll hopefully have a build'n'bull for a few and I may actually get something done. He's started work on a Hasegawa P-40E... and Eagle334 has one that he says he's going to build for this GB... do I hear the words 'common kit' fellas?? Wink [;)]Wink [;)]

Steve-O

It may be a couple weeks or so until I can begin. I got the kit, but I'm waiting for Eduard to release this detail set:
http://www.eduard.cz/products/card_main.php?id_product=3933&name=P-40&catalogue_nb=&type=&pgroup=&scale=&product_month=&product_year=&page_start=20
If you click "Instruction Sheet," you can view all five pages with an Adobe Acrobat reader. Now that I've seen this, I can't even consider building the kit without it. I guess it hasn't been released yet at Squadron or Great Models, so I'll have to wait. But it will be worth it.
